Cork To Cobh Race

Weather conditions were close to perfect on Sunday for the Sports Supplies Cork to Cobh ‘15’ Mile Race. A record number of 802 competitors crossed the finish line and it was great to see so many of our athletes taking part. As the complete results are presently being processed we are not in a position to roll call names and times. The full results will be forwarded as soon as they come to hand. Our own camera man Denis Kelleher was extremely busy on his day off from running and has promptly sent us a very comprehensive array of quality photographs, which I will forward.

What we do know so far is that several of the regular speed merchants were again in fine form, some runners with the Dublin Marathon on their minds did utilise the race as a timely progress guide whilst others completed a 15 mile race for the very first time. Deirdre Aherne and Claire O’Leary were amongst the latter group who can feel well satisfied with their inaugural outings over the distance.

Up front Noel O’Regan led home our big contingent with another cracking run which saw him take second spot in the Over 40’s. Michelle Nolan ran very steadily to finish as fifth lady overall, whilst Breda Cahill continues to make great strides, her latest effort securing 3rd prize in the Over 35’s. Breda’s training colleague Margaret Barry also had every reason to celebrate, having made a full recovery from mid season injury Margaret will travel to Dublin with plenty of confidence after topping the Over 55’s honour list.

In concluding a collective ‘well done’ is extended to all our finishers.

Marathon Preparations

After Sunday the majority of those with sights on the 30th Dublin Marathon will soon be scaling down their preparations later this week. This period usually features the last long run in the programme with the tapering process coming into play after next weekend. We will look ahead to the big race in greater detail in two weeks time, but at present it certainly seems as if our club will have 20 plus on the line come Bank Holiday Monday.

New Faces Welcomed At Inaugural Open Evening

Our inaugural Open Evening proved a great success with a very large gathering in attendance. Thanks to all who helped in any way in organising and catering for the event. It was extremely positive to see the continued growing interest in Midleton AC, highlighted by the large number of potential new members who enjoyed the hospitality at Midleton Community Centre.

Beginner’s Training Session

As a result of the gathering an additional training session for beginners will now take place from 6pm to 7pm each Wednesday under the guidance of Vincent Connolly. If you know anybody interested who was not present at our Open Evening, please inform them that this training will begin on this Wednesday at Midleton Community Centre.

New Training Arrangements

Of course this coming Wednesday also sees the official start of our indoor winter training schedule for the senior section of the club. The overall arrangements from now until late spring are as follows.

MONDAY (with the exception of Bank Holidays and December 28th) 6pm to 7pm at Midleton College All Weather Facility. WEDNESDAY 7pm to 8pm at Midleton Community Centre (with the exception of December 23rd and 30th). The subscription per session is 3 euro per person to cover the cost of hire/lights etc. The aforementioned beginner’s sessions will also continue at 6pm each Wednesday over the next few months.

Injury Prevention

Our own club member Neilius Aherne, Sports/Holistic Therapist who was present at last week’s Open Evening is available for any advice on injury prevention and treatment. Neilius may be contacted on 086-8438355 for appointment and advice.
