It is hoped to have a special t shirt to mark the forty five years available shortly

Its going to be a very busy in Ballycotton on Thursday with the earlier starting time of 7.30pm meaning many people will arrive in a very small time frame – approx 6.30pm to 7.10pm.

The organisers require extra stewards to assist with parking and also extra people to steward around the finish line area.

Details of this year’s John Buckley Sports Cork Half Marathon have been announced by organisers St Finbarr’s AC.

The thriving city based club hope that this year’s race on Sunday September 11th will attract it’s usual sizeable entry and are pleased to announce a number of new innovations for this popular fixture which starts and finishes in Blarney.

Chip timing will be in use for the first time, whilst the race will also see the introduction of highly visible pacers who will target athletes hoping to break 1 hour 30 minutes, 1 hour 45 minutes and 2 hours. Meanwhile each runner who completes the course will receive a race souvenir along with a money-off voucher for John Buckley Sports. As an extra touch, runners’ individual race time will be forwarded by text on the day of the race.

As always the fixture which has become a land mark for many runners advancing their preparations ahead of the Dublin City Marathon, will also incorporate the Cork and Munster Half Marathon Championships. Those who have journeyed the by now famous route will be well aware of what lies ahead but for first timers, this Half Marathon offers an interesting challenge overt he traditional ‘out and back’ looped course from Blarney to Grenagh. The most significant features come either side of Grenagh village with a significant climb followed by an appealing descent.

Race headquarters will again be based at Blarney GAA Club where entries will be taken on the day up until 10.30am at a cost of 25 euro. However, it’s a policy that St Finbarr’s AC Race Director Ken Devine and his committee hope that not a huge number of people will follow. Instead there is the attractive option of entering on line at www.stfinbarrsaccom for 20 euro up until September 3rd. Alternatively postal entries may also be sent up until the same date to John Buckley Sports Mulgrave Road, Cork. Enquiries should also be directed to John at 021-4508830.

An extensive prize list covers all categories and includes individual prizes for the first ten men and first five ladies across the line. Team prizes are also up for grabs for both men and ladies.

Ken Devine takes up the duties of chief race organiser from colleague Cathal O’Connell who has co-ordinated the event for the past number of years. This time Cathal who is again enjoying a superb season is likely to be a significant figure towards the head of the field as he gauges his preparations in advance of the Dublin Marathon.

Meantime Ken Devine hopes the feel good factor created by both the Half Marathon and in particular the relay in the Cork City Marathon will boost the forthcoming Blarney race.

“We would especially welcome first time runners to Blarney and newcomers to the distance, especially those who may have been involved in the relay in Cork and got a taste for running. It’s nice to step up and test oneself over a longer route. With still relative long evenings during August it certainly is easier to build up the mileage that later in the year”

Any words of advice from a man who himself is a highly respected and very accomplished runner?

“It is very much a case of building up the mileage gently for new runners. Try to programme a longer run into the schedule ideally at weekends, but be mindful not to take too much of a leap at any one time”, concluded Ken.

The Blarney Half Marathon is certainly the focal point for many established runners, but this year those who fancy the distance have ample opportunity to test their credentials both before and after. The Woodies DIY National Half Marathon Championships will be held in Waterford on the previous weekend. The route on Saturday September 3 is the same was used on the last occasion that the event was held on Suirside, a trip to Tramore and back from the Regional Sports Centre.

Meantime the concluding event in the very successful Ballyhoura Series will also focus on the Half Marathon distance on the following weekend. The race will be based in Charleville on Sunday September 18 and will also incorporate a relay event (4 x 5K).

NEWSLETTER
Midleton AC Senior Section Monday 22nd August 2011
By PETER GUNNING
An eclectic mix of venues and events was on offer for our runners over the past two weeks. The Clew Bay Half Marathon, The Route to Crook 5 miler in Crookhaven, The John Hartnett 10k in Ballyhooly, the Ardmore 5 and the Cloyne 5k ensured variety in terms of both distance and scenery.

Closest to home the Round Tower provided the scenic backdrop in Cloyne for the second running of the community fundraising 5k. It was also the second running in the rain of this superb little race as once again the black clouds opened. However the weather conditions did not deter the huge entry with sixty-four of the four hundred finishers wearing the white, black and green of Midleton AC. This is an excellent road-race. Race-orgainser, Mags Twohig and her highly efficient committee can feel justifiably proud in having created an event indelibly indexed on the Cork County Road Race calendar. The well-marshalled course is fast yet challenging with the majority of our members recording pleasing times.

Kevin Smith and Darragh Canavan led the Midleton AC challenge finishing in 17:33 and 17:55 respectively. Brilliant running alsofrom Sinéad Kevany at 18:26 saw her take second place overall in the ladies race while Adam Duchnicz, Neilus Aherne, John Cashman and Tom Cody all dipped under the nineteen minute mark. Club captain Edmund O’Sullivan chipped a 19:02 with terrific running also from Dan Horgan, Michael Hanrahan, John Carey, Simon Thompson, Barry Aherne, Ned Ramsell and Francis Maunsell. Breda Cahill and Ana Doris were again among the category prizes while Sandra Carroll, Mary O’Keeffe, Linda Hegarty, Karen Morrissey and Susan Delaney all tip-toed through the puddles to post fine times.

Tom Cody, Kevin Smith and Denis Kelleher all enjoyed the change of scene in picturesque Crookhaven with Kevin finishing fourth overall in 29:16. Tom was ninth in 32:02 (needless to add first in 0-55!) while ultra-runner Denis made the journey most worthwhile in finishing 16th in 33:07.

Tom was on the podium yet again a few days later winning the 0-55 in the John Hartnett 10k in Ballyhooly and finishing tenth overall in an impressive 40:05. Well done also to Chris Murphy who finished 2nd in the ladies 0-35 in 49:11. Chris used the race as part of her marathon preparation for Dublin in October. On a demandingly hilly course, good runs were also enjoyed by Danny McCarthy, Nicola McPherson, Joan McCarthy and Mary O’Mahony.

Marc Dalton led the Midleton charge in Ardmore clocking yet another sub-30 as he finished in 29:25. The ubiquitous Tom Cody followed him over the line in 31:16 to take another category prize with Mr Yet-Another-P-B-Fergal O’Meara at 31:32. John Cashman is enjoying a fine season and was delighted to dip 32 minutes finishing in a comfortable 31:34. Breda Cahill in 34:12 continues to improve in both endurance and speed which should see her running an excellent Dublin Marathon in October. Danny McCarthy, Denis Kelleher and Brian Nolan enjoyed their night’s running at the West Waterford venue as did Moira Morrissey.

In Louisburgh Co Mayo Claire O’Leary was our solitary entry in the Clew Bay half-marathon. Indeed while wearing the Midelton AC vest Claire was the sole representative from her county. Claire dispelled the loneliness and thoroughly enjoyed her day with a great run in the west. She recommends a club outing to Clew Bay next year!

While Tom Cody deserves the plaudits for his prize winning exploits over the past two weeks a pride of place must go to John Hennessy who took a 1500m bronze medal at the All-Ireland vets in Dublin this weekend. This is the first time in many years since the club has medalled in this competition. John, your club colleagues salute you!

The 5 mile summer series concludes in Ballycotton on Thursday night next with several of our athletes set to receive the much coveted top finishers’ T-shirts. Each runner’s aggregate time for all four races will determine the top fifty men and the top twenty ladies. Kevin Smith goes in to the final race looking for a top ten overall spot and if Marc Dalton continues his impressive form of late he may join Kevin in the amongst the single digit eilte. Adam Duchnicz, Tom Cody and our leading junior, Michael Furlong are all well inside the Top-50 cut off point. A solid run from Mick Murphy should also see him choosing between a medium or large (I’d say large would suit you better Mick!). Our ladies too are well placed with Anne Geary, Sally Drennan, Anna Doris, Breda Cahill, Mary O’Keeffe and Marie Murphy all comfortably within the top twenty. Several of our athletes will receive commemorative plaques to mark their achievement in completing all four races. Well done to all. Thursday’s race will complete the quartet which began in Ballyhandreen in May.

The club extends its sincere sympathy to former club chairman Jim Leahy on the death of his wife Colette and to Dan McCarthy on the death of his wife, Kathleen. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a n-anamacha dilise.

Midleton AC were again to the fore on the road scene over the weekend as our
members spanned the county, taking part in Mitchelstown on Friday and
Crookhaven on Sunday.

As seen below our 8 runners on Friday led home by Neilus Aherne who won the
Over 55 category all produced very solid performances. Some even made it 3
races in 3 days. Well done to all.

DONT FORGET CLOYNE 5K THIS WEDNESDAY - 8PM

Friday 5 August 2011

News Update
By John Cashman - Joint P.R.O

All Roads Lead To Cloyne On Wednesday Next

Cloyne is the place to be on Wednesday next August 10th, as the second
running of the 5K Race takes place with an 8pm start. The damp weather and
rapidly darkening skies failed to sap the wonderful atmosphere that was
created at last year’s inaugural fixture. This time the hope is that the
skies will be bright blue as the expected large entry takes to the road.
Five of our club members have been actively involved in organising the race
and thus we urge all our members to support their colleagues in a race which
is organised in aid of the Cloyne Community Association. Margaret Twohig,
Ann Marie Perry, Breda Cahill, Lisa O’Lomasney and Mary Keane will no doubt
have a special Cloyne welcome for us all to what promises to be a great
sporting occasion in a village famed far and wide for it’s sporting
heritage.
Registration is at the National School, where entries will be taken from
6pm. Refreshments, prize giving and the draw for spot prizes will also be
based in the school. All enquiries/offers of help and assistance should be
directed to 087-2094493

Compliments To Carrigtwohill
A word also to our local Carrigtwohill contingent who did a wonderful job in
organising the Carrigtwohill 5K recently. The event ran to perfection and
obviously is now installed as a central part of the summer running diary.
Well done folks!

Ballycotton Series
Summer is definitely passing at pace, when we are already reflecting on the
Churchtown South ‘5’. Another huge entry took part in this year’s race
which was blessed with perfect running conditions.
Our Mdielton AC contingent was again out in force, with 68 club members
crossing the line. Again just like the two previous legs of this fantastic
series, we had several head line makers in all parts of the field. There
were those who continue to set the standard towards the top of the field,
those who regularly scoop their category prizes and those who record the
very notable feat of improving their time on previous races and even set
personal best times in the process.
A quick random selection firstly brings into focus Kevin Smith with a
blistering sub 29 minute run, Darragh Canavan with another ground breaking
sub 30 run and surely another pb, Adam Duchnicz with a 30:33 finish and Tom
Cody with a seasonal best category winning 31:19.
Breda Cahill continued her wonderful season and had a double reason to
celebrate. In clocking another personal best of 33:45, Breda also topped the
honours list in the Over 40’s. Anna Dorris was also on the podium in the
same category, whilst Sally Drennan and Mary O’Keeffe finished second and
third respectively in the Over 45’s. Our ladies team also finished third
overall.
Good performances were also recorded by amongst others Ann Geary, Karol
Watson, Mark Walsh, Niall O’Neill, Kevin O’Reilly, Michael Kenneally, Ned
Ramsell, Frances Maunsell, Barry Ahern, Margaret Jones, Nicola McPherson,
Moira Morrisson, Noreen Emerson, Mary Keane, Margaret Sinclair, Nora Savage,
Suzanne Sloane, Catriona Canavan, Sinead Buckley and Claire O’Leary. Many of
the aforementioned made up considerable time on their previous outing in
Shanagarry five weeks earlier.
Runners are reminded that there is 7.30pm start for the final race in the
series on Thursday August 25th in Ballycotton. All who complete the four
races will receive a commemorative plaque in recognition of their
achievements.

Overall Picture
There is also a coveted ‘Top 50’ t shirt for the leading 50 men and also a
‘top 20’ t shirt for the leading 20 ladies. These places are calculated on
the basis of the aggregate times over the four races. Presently Midleton AC
has 6 men in the top 50 and also 6 ladies in the top 20. - In total 194
men and 83 ladies have completed all 3 races to date. More information on
the race series is available by logging on to www.ballycotton running.com.

Kinsale 5 Miler
Twenty four hours after the Churchtown South Race a more modest entry of
just over 170 took the road in Kinsale over what is regarded as a fairly
lively 5 mile trip. Headline maker here was John O’Connell who finished a
splendid 16th overall, dipping under the magic 30 minute mark the first
time. John has been in tremendous form this season and is also making a
huge impression on the triathlon scene where he competes on a weekly basis.
Well done John!
Tom Cody needed no time to recover from the exertions of Churchtown, landing
another category prize after an eye catching 30:46. Also in celebratory mood
was Denis Kelleher who was on the honours list in the Over 45’s after one of
his best runs of the year. Well done also to John Carey who recorded one of
his fastest times of his career in breaking the 35 minute barrier. Good
performances were also enjoyed by Vincent O’Neill, Danny McCarthy, Margaret
Twohig and Marion Cotter.

Novartis 5K
Now to Ringaskiddy where the popular Novartis 5K kick started a run of three
races in three days this week. Here the usual big entry took on the testing
5K route famous for it’s climb near the end. A big Midleton contingent,
mens’ captain Edmond O’Sullivan ensured morale was high and preparation was
right as his Midleton UDC squad travelled together to the venue. The pre
race tactics definitely paid off with the team scooping two team prizes.
Kathleen O’Connell, Neilus Aherne and Tom Cody were amongst our runners in
top form and were all rewarded with individual category prizes.

Shanagarry 5K
Shanagarry welcomed it’s usual sizeable Midleton AC gathering for the 25th
running of the festival 5K last evening. John Kearney’s long standing
course record of 15 minutes flat remains in tact on a night when 100
participants marked on all time high for the event. A total of 44 runners
from our club participated.
David Murphy from the juvenile wing emphasized his huge potential by
finishing 3rd in 17:26, a remarkable display on his first race after a break
from action. Regular speed merchants Marc Dalton (6th) and Darragh Canavan
(10th) again impressed whilst Sinead Kevany’s arrival at the club has seen
her make an instant impression winning the ladies race 18;45.
Category winner Tom Cody is surely on the brink of applying for planning
permission to extend his trophy cabinet after topping the Over 55’s whilst
junior athlete Michael Furlong, Mark Walsh, Vincent O’Neill, Barry Aherne,
John Carey, Simon Thompson, Paul Kierans, Donie O’Connell, Alan Kelleher and
Trish Macropoulos were amongst our crew to record very positive
performances.

John Hartnett Challenge Road Race – Correction and Apology

It has come to Cork County Boards attention that the above event on Sunday, 14th August 2011 DOES have an Athletics Ireland Permit. This was overlooked due to an administrative error by Cork County Board and on behalf of The Board I would like to offer sincere apologies to the organisers of the John Hartnett Challenge Road Race.

I would like to wish the organisers every success in their forthcoming event and I encourage all athletes and clubs to support the John Hartnett Challenge Road Race.

Paddy Buckley
