Cobh 10 Mile
Morning races have proved popular for the
running fraternity and with this sell out race , sunshine, conditions were just
ideal for a great 2018 Cobh 10.

This undulating course didn’t deter over 20
Midleton athletes from participating.
Plenty of support along the way was just
what our club athletes needed as tempatures got sticky from 10 am onwards.
First person was Kevin Smith who ran very
comfortably and 4th in his competitive M40 category. Neilus followed
within a minute and clocked first place in M60. Where Neilus finds the energy
for the chat enroute, I’ll never know!
Derek Ahern arrived very quickly after. Derek is hopping off the roads at the moment.
His Ballynoe pre race tempo last Thursday proved a recipe for success based on
todays performace.
Don Mc Donald zoomed by only minutes after
Derek running at a very steady pace.
The Boston marathon duo, Helen Gilroy and
Mick Murphy were close after Don. What a season they are having. From the
freezing conditions of the US to the sunny temps of Cobh, they must have
inbuilt climate control. Well done guys you are both hardy runners, ready for
anything. Helen bagged a second place in her category too.
Brian Cott, Paul Geary and Declan O
Callaghan ran great times coming in in 72/73/74
mins.
Breeda Sheedy, another current ‘grasshopper’on
the roads was on the crest of her East county medal win from Ballynoe. Breeda
got third in her category and finished looking very comfortable.
Marie Gilman and Maurice Ring crossed the
line well under 80.
Hats off to Martha Mc Namara, despite being
plagued by injury had a terrific race. It must be the endorphines from the
birth of her second grandchild.

all the Mc Namara's).
Katherine O Connor completed it in 1’27
with Michael Mc Namara next home in just over 1’30.
Shelia Buckley ‘buddy paced’ her husband
and as usual glided by in great form, after a great Stryker 4 win last
Wednesday. Well done Shelia.
Alan Morley completed the race despite a
niggling back in a good time of 1’31. Well done Alan, its great to see you
back.
With her lipstick in tact, Amanda Cooney
cruised home in 1’35. Given that its Amanda’s third race this week, she is
definetly our top club competitor.
Amanda, gimme a M, gimme an I, D,LE,T,O,N.
Margaret Jones followed Amanda leading a
crowd on their training run in prep for the Cork marathon. We’ll be there to
shout her on in June.
Mark Fuller, one of our newest members came
home in 1’35. Great to see you him there and with the gang after. Special
mention to James Long who had a great run and was in the Midleton top 5.

Important Message From Our Club Captain
Hi All,
the Waterworks Road which is the first mile and the final 600m of our race requires a bit of hard work to clean it up. The Council cannot clean it as it is owned by Irish Water. Therefore it is up to US, the club members to muck in and get it ready for our race on Thursday.
Help needed by anyone available with a brush on Wednesday at 8pm.
Meeting at the Gaelscoil side. Don’t forget “ No man/club is an island”.

Fantastic Results in the East Cork Road Racing Championships for our club.
A great night for Midleton AC in Ballynoe tonight where once again our members excelled themselves. Our Ladies team ran over a 3 Km course and our team of Eileen Leahy, Sally Drennan and Breda Sheedy took the Bronze medals. They were ably assisted by team mates Claire Fitzgerald, Gillian Bransfield, Claire Parker, Karen Knowles and Joan McCarthy. As Captain Claire Fitzgerald says "A really competitive field of athletes out there tonight so medals were well earned and deserved".
Our men's team of Morgan O'Regan, Ger O'Regan (both recently completed the Manchester Marathon), Derek Aherne and David Cody also had great runs and came away with the Bronze Medals also. They were also assisted by Declan Dorgan who whilst having a great run got a twinge in his hamstring and did the sensible thing and stopped. Many of the runners here tonight got their first senior medals with the club and hopefully they will be the first of many. Next year is the 40th running of the event so expect great celebrations. Well done to all who ran and to all who supported and to Club Captain Claire Fitzgerald who has been encouraging members to run here for the past number of weeks.
