WEEKEND RUNAROUND

News

Two PBs For Daniel

Daniel Colbert again excelled today at the Woodies DIY Athletic Ireland Indoor Open Games where whilst working on building up his speed he achieved two new PBs  in 60 mtrs (7.27) and 200 mtrs (22.81) he also took 2nd place in both races. These events were again streamed live from the AAI website and were well worth watching. Well done as always Daniel.

MMRA Race in Curragh Wood

The Munster Mountain Running Association held the second race in the current series in Cunnagh Wood Sunday morning. Over eighty runners took part in this event which is growing in popularity by the week.
We had three members taking part and all performed very well. With Andre Brodkorb having a superb run and showing what skill he has as a downhill runner whilst he was closely follow by a flying Matt Chojan who also came thundering downhill with both finishing around the top ten places.
Our only lady taking part was Maggie Chojan who had a great run also and finished 2nd Lady.
It was a grand morning for the race which took place in very different conditions from the first event held there last Summer. More info and details of future races can be found on the MMRA website.

Masters and Intermediate National Cross country championships
The above cross country races will be held on Sunday, 23 February in Dunboyne, Co. Meath.  If anyone is interested in having their name put forward to run for Midleton AC please let me know.  It is likely that some athletes will also be selected to run on the Cork teams.

WEEKEND RUNAROUND

Dungarvan 10 Mile

In what were some of the worst conditions ever the John Tracey Dungarvan 10 mile took place today Sunday. It was cold and windy and whilst waiting for the start (delayed due to a funeral) it started to rain and then this turned to hailstones. This did not deter the Midleton AC crew who all seemed to battle bravely and come home with some great results.
There were far too many members running to mention everyone but our first three men home were Mike Dolphin ( getting a PB), Emmet Ronan and Fergal O'Meara (Getting a PB by over a minute ). Whilst our first three ladies were Anna Doris ( 3rd O/40), Karen Grant and Helen Gilroy.
Amongst others who got PBs today were Mike Cremin, Rod Scanlan, Don Ryan ( as he says himself thanks to Neilus Aherne's great massages), Aidan O'Herlihy and Margaret Jones. I am sure there were many others as well.
A special mention must go to club member John Dunphy who volunteered as a 10 min. pacer which he did to perfection. It must have been mighty hard out there today for John going at that pace as he would normally be nearer a 6 min miler than a 10 min one. We done John you did us proud.
Apologies to anyone I didn't cheer on out there today but with the conditions it was impossible to see everyone especially if one was not wearing the club vest and even then it was hard at times.

Full results are available on West Waterford ACs website.

More Photo's Below at end of post.

Well Done Daniel

A big well done to Daniel Colbert who came 4th in the All Ireland U23  Indoor 400 mtrs today in Athlone. This was a fine run by Daniel especially looking at the competition and remembering that Dan is only 19 and still has three years to reach 23. Its was great to be able to see the Mdt. AC singlet on the live stream from Athlone and it also put one in the picture of how much older the other competitors were than Daniel.

Most Roads Lead To Dungarvan

The Annual Dungarvan 10 takes place this weekend  and we wish all our members doing it the very best including the experienced people and those doing a 10 mile race for the first time. Lets hope the weather improves and whatever about the rain that we don't get the famous "Dungarvan Wind" that we had a few years ago .Whilst the course is more or less a loop the wind was against us no matter what way we turns. As always under the guidance of James Veale West Waterford AC you can expect a very well organised event.

All Irelands In Athlone.

Our youngest member Daniel Colbert will be running in the All Irelands in Athlone this weekend and we wish him the very best whilst not raising our expectations too high ( no pressure Dan) we look forward to a good run as always and maybe a PB. remember Daniel is only nineteen .We wish him the very best.
Anyone that wants to watch the races from here live just go to Athletics Ireland website where you can find a live link on Sunday morning.

Marathon Musings

Joan McCarthy made a presentation of all the proceeds from the sale of her book Marathon Musings to Pat Buckley "Lets Get Together Foundation"( suicide awareness) during the week and she wishes to thank all the members of the club and others who purchased the book and supported this very worthy cause. The book was very well reviewed in both the Irish Examiner and the Irish Independent and elsewhere.

Bits and Pieces

A club member had a very significant birthday during the week that involved a change of category and he had a most delightful cake in the Midleton AC colours. Anyone who can guess his name can have a free slice of cake. Answers on a post card please.

As always please send in your reports ,news etc and we will be happy to publish them especially for races like Dungarvan with PBs ect, its the only way we can keep track of them. mdtacinfo@gmail.com

WEEKEND RUNAROUND

MUNSTER GOLD
FOR Daniel Colbert

Daniel Colbert won the Munster U23 indoor 400 mtr. in great style in Nenagh today. This is a brilliant achievement for this young man who is not yet even twenty. Well done Daniel you did yourself and the club proud.
For those of you that missed a previous post Daniel was awarded with a special award from the Cork County Board last Fri night at a reception in the River Lee Hotel. He was the first ever senior  athlete from the club to receive such an award.

Littleisland FMC 4Mile

Almost five hundred runners took part in this race this morning which through no fault of the BHAA was almost half hour late starting. We had a large contingent from Midleton AC taking part far too many to mention individually but all seemed to run well with Chris McCarthy getting him self a new PB as did Paula O'Sullivan and Helen Kenny. Mike Cremin got a new PB in 24..55 with some great running.
A big thank you to those from the club who came to support. We had a few prize winners also John O'Halloran took 1st O/60 and Joan McCarthy 2nd O/55 and Kathleen O'Connell 3rd O/55. Unfortunately there was a fall at the start when a Mallow runner Neil Holland tripped and badly hurt himself. Best wishes Neil hope you are recovered soon. Please be sure and register with the BHAA as a lot of runners lost out on prizes today due to not having registered.

As always please send in your reports and results ,PBs  etc. if you want them mentioned on the blog. mdtacinfo@gmail.com

Notice from Cork BHAA

FMC 4Mile Littleisland @11am Sunday Next.

The next race on the BHAA calendar is the FMC 4 mile Please try and get there early so as to avoid the long queues that usually occur at this race. It is a relatively easy course almost an out and back with a loop in the middle. One thing to look out for is that the start and finish are in different places. The finish is about ¼ mile from the hall and the start is over ¾ mile from the hall. It is easy to think you are finished when you see the hall.
Please note also you must be registered with BHAA (10 EURO) in order to be eligible for prizes in this race. Entry fee 5 E for reg. runners and 8E for others. A really well organised and enjoyable race.

Danny

As always please send in your reports and results if you want them mentioned on the blog. mdtacinfo@gmail.com. This would be a great help as I am very busy doing the registrations for the club at the moment.

WEEKEND RUNAROUND

Polar Night Half Marathon in Tromso NORWAY

The Northernmost Half Marathon In The World

On Sat 4th Jan one of our members ran one of the most unusual races ever ran by a member of the club. Fionan Oh'Aodain ran in the Polar Night Half Marathon in Tromso Norway This race takes place 300Km north of the Artic Circle and he did it in a time of 1.56 which is his second best time but the organisers say you should add 20-25 mins to your normal time due to the fact you are running on ice and snow which is why he is delighted with his time.
It is the Northernmost Half Marathon in the world and over four hundred runners took part from over thirty five countries which makes it a really international event. The scenery there was stunning ,
Well done Fionan as always you did the club proud and what a way to start the New Year.

I wonder would it make a good destination for this year club trip away ?

BANDON 5Mile

Today saw a new course record being set here by David McCarthy who ran the course in a time of 23.41. This was a great start to the year for Bandon AC who this year celebrate fifty years as a club.
We had nine members from our own club taking part and all had good runs,
Our first man home running a fine time was Mike Dolphin followed by the ever improving Sean O'Sullivan. Next came a man on a mission Fergal O'Meara who not only got a new PB but took 2nd Place O/45 as well. John O'Halloran was next with a fine run followed by Joseph Fouhy who got a new PB here with 38.31 knocking over ten minutes of his time here last year. Others who had fine runs were Donie O'Connell and Kevin Morrison,
We had only two ladies running Anna Doris who came 6th lady overall and also took 1st O/40 place. Joan McCarthy also had a fine run keeping up with last years time which is always a good start to the new year.
The race was well organised as usual with a fine spread after the only criticism is that the ladies prizes were rather poor especially as they stopped with only one O/50 for the ladies and the men's continued until O/70. Not much equality there.
