REVIEW
Dave O’Brien is a legend, he spoke to 5,000 people in March at a health conference in Munich, to an audience which included 500 doctors and healthcare professionals and got a standing ovation. He flew directly to Long beach in California and spoke to over 6,000 more to another standing ovation before moving on to give 2 talks in Northern California to packed audiences.

On his return to Ireland he took off again and gave talks in Helsinki, Finland on Wednesday/Thursday, Brussels on Friday and London on Saturday. On the following Monday he spoke to a packed audience of Dublin footballers and Irish rugby players in Dublin. He has been invited to speak at Old Trafford to the Manchester United Youth Players on Nutrition.

Rated by Time Magazine as the toughest races in the world. Dave was one of only a handful of men in the world, the only Irishman ever and the oldest man on the planet, at 56 to complete all 4 in the same year, in fact in a 38 week period. The hottest, Coldest, Driest and Windiest Deserts in the world carrying everything on his back to survive

You may be fit, but are you “Healthy” ?

Buckle up for this roller coaster EXPERIENCE.

His talk is a must for anybody involved in Sport and would be great for those who want to improve their health and general well-being.

Finally, here's an opportunity to help a really worthy cause -
"Just letting you know about a Fun Run coming up on the 16th November at 7.30pm called Run for Mark in the Dark.

This is an event being run simultaneously in Dublin, Galway, Belfast in Cork over 4 or 8 km (Cork City Centre subject to approval).

The event is to help raise funds to assist with the capital and ongoing costs associated with Mark's spinal injury.

For over a decade Mark was known as an inspiration, an adventure athlete competing in the world’s harshest environments despite becoming completely blind at the age of 22. On the night of the 2ndof July 2010 everything changed again. He fell from a second story window fracturing his skull, some ribs and breaking his back in a number of places leaving him paralysed from the waist down.

Monday 17th October

Exchanging the road running shoes for spikes, our members abandoned the concrete, tarmac and potholes for the mud, grass and rabbit-holes of Hayes farm in Conna for the Cork County Novices and Masters Cross-Country Championships. It was a most successful day for Midleton AC with Anna Doris leading our ladies team home to take silver. Narrowly pipped by a very strong UCC team , Anna was joined on the second tier of the podium by Maggie Chojan, Orlaith Farmer and Susan Delaney with Mary O’Keeffe and Catherine O’Carroll also finishing strongly. Club captain Sally Drennan was forced out of the race through injury but was delighted with the performance of her team. Our men too were a source of delight with Neilus Aherne(yet again) taking first place 0-55 and Stanislaw Byczec third 0-50. John Hennessy and Deaglán Ó Dorgáin led the boys home over the gruelling 6k course with solid running also from Adam Duchnicz, John O’Connell , Conor McGrath, John Carey, Simon Thompson and Kevin O’Reilly. On a not unrelated tangent, John O’Connell was running a week after winning his first triathlon event. Speaking of triathlons and all things endurance leads us neatly to that Everest of the race calendar for so many of our athletes.
Yes, it is that time of year again when the truly masochistic among us suspend common sense and embark on the ultimate running challenge that is the Dublin City Marathon. A quick head-count by this column identifies twenty-eight club members who will take to the line in Kildare St at 10am on the 31st. Many are seasoned marathoners with the crater-sized welts, black toe-nails and exaggerated nipples (don’t ask..it’s a man thing) which they display on request as badges of honour (especially in the Maple at closing time on the night of the event).
This year however sees several marathon virgins amongst our members. Sinéad Ivers, Sinéad Buckley, Susan Buckley, Helen Gliroy, Sinead Kevaney, Bernie Twomey, Colette Barry, Mary O’Mahony, Marian Carroll and Barry Aherne all hope to hit the finish line in or around the 4:00/4:30hr mark. Margaret Jones has already a 3:56 on her marathon CV which she clocked in Cork earlier this year. Margaret hopes to shave a few minutes off that in the Big Smoke. Trish Murphy too hopes to benefit from her experience in Cork and is expecting a strong run. Darragh Canavan in his first attempt at the 26.2 miler is hoping to break 3hours as is Shane Cooney who sees 2:50 as a distinct possibility. Shane is already part of that elite sub-3hr fraternity. Fergal O’Meara was disappointed with his 3:23 in Rotterdam in April but is confident of securing a sub 3:10 or better for yet another 2011 PB. Breda Cahill, who must rank as the most improved female athlete this season hopes to shatter her previous best of 3:33. Claire Fitzgerald and last year’s female athlete of the year Deirdre Aherne have accumulated hundreds of training miles over the past few months and both will be looking forward to hitting the tape in or around 3:30. Mark Walsh will run his third marathon and is optimistic that his 8min/mile training will see him break the 3:30. Simon Thompson takes on his second marathon and will be hoping to finish under 3:40 while Peter Gunning will be hoping for a similar performance to his last year’s 3:26 as he goes to the marathon line for the eighth occasion. Rosarii Griffin is running the event for her Action Lesotho charity. Having worked in Lesotho, Rosarii is running Dublin as a means of raising both money and awareness to help fight the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Lesotho. Check out www.actionlesotho.ie for further details. Mary B Walsh will run her ninth marathon in the company of first-timer Noreen Emerson. Adam Duchnicz broke 3:20 in Rotterdam and after an excellent season is more than capable of nearing or even dipping the 3 hour mark. Denis Kelleher also goes to the line on the 31st as will Mary Toher both of whom can legitimately lay claim to the crown of our club’s most experienced marathoners. The final salute however must go to former club captain, the inspirational Danny McCarthy. For the past four months Danny and Joan’s house on Chestnut Avenue has been the Sunday morning rendez-vous for the seasoned and virgin marathoner alike. At the five, ten and fifteen mile marks on the training route, bottles of water appear oasis-like thanks to Danny’s meticulous planning. Moreover, many is the athlete who has benefitted from Danny’s chaperoning as the wall kicks in on Foster’s Avenue. Marathon number 16 beckons for Danny, we wish him and all our team the very best on the day. We look forward to checking out your wounds in The Maple...
Training continues on Monday at 6pm in Midleton College and on Wednesdays in the Community Centre 6pm beginners, 7pm the rest.
Until next time... keep running!

Monday 10 October 2011

It does appear as if the very popular East Cork 3K Winter Series will not be happening this year. The promoting club considered the situation at length at their recent meeting and due to increased numbers, increased traffic and the absence of a regular large group of volunteers, the event was considered a non runner.

A few alternatives were aired but as yet there is no sign in any different arrangements.
If any member has any suggestions for a new safe venue we would be delighted to pass on the information
.

Races can be a bit scarce on the roads at this time of year and whilst many of club members are very much involved in cross country action, those who wish to stay on the roads should note the following fixtures. Some are outside of the county but others are nearby including the next BHAA race – the HSE 4 Mile on Sunday November 6th – 11am. Don’t forget our ‘captain’s run’ is also on the agenda. More details to follow.

Sunday Next October 16th

There is 10K Charity Race/Fun Run in Gortroe in North Cork – 12 noon

Saturday 22nd October

Race 1 in the Mizuno 5K Series takes place in Killarney at 11am

Sunday 23rd October

Doneraile 5 Mile Race – 2pm in Doneraile Park

Sunday 30th October

Bandon 10K – 1pm

Monday Oct 31st Dublin City Marathon

Sunday November 6th

H.S.E. ‘4’ Mile Race on the Marina Circuit in Cork City – 11am

Saturday November 12th

Mizuno 5K – Race 2 in Killlarney – 11am

Of course, many of our athletes are now counting down to the Dublin City Marathon on Monday October 31st and we wish them every success in their final weeks of preparations.

Regards

John Cashman

FULL RESULTS OF YESTERDAYS CROSS COUNTRY -

Midleton AC had a great turnout at the Cork County Novice and Masters
Cross County Championships in Conna on 9 October. The Midleton ladies
novice team finished in second place.
The team was Anna Doris, Maggie
Chojan, Orlagh Farmer and Susan Delaney closely followed by Mary
O'Keefe and Catherine Carroll. Individually Anna was 3rd over 40
.
We also had a very large team of men who all performed very well -
John Hennessy, Declan Dorgan, Adam Duchnicz, Neilus Aherne, Stanislaw
Byczec, John O'Connell, Conor McGrath, Simon Thompson, John Carey and
Kevin O'Reilly. Stan was third over 50 and Neilus first over 55.
Any more over 50 men out there to make a very strong over 50's team
next year?

If anyone is interested in running in the Munster novice cross
country championships in Newmarket on Fergus, Co. Clare on October 23
please contact Noel O'Regan - mrnoelcoregan@eircom.net (men's team)
or Sally Drennan - thedrennans@eircom.net (women's team). Entries to
be in this Wednesday, 12 October

It is only right to give a special mention to Sally Drennan who unfortunately could not run due to injury but without whose support and guidance over the year this success who not have been possible. It is often over the years that Sally on her own kept the Midleton AC Flag flying at Cross Country meetings around the country and that on the occasion of this success she was unable to run but as Team Manager she should be proud as we all are of her achivements

CORK -COBH +++++++++++
by Peter Gunning
- Joint P.R.O

With the minds of so many members focused on the Dublin City Marathon at the end of the month it was inevitable that all east Cork running roads would lead to Cobh on the 2nd October for the annual BHAA pre-marathon benchmark that is the 15-mile Cork to Cobh. Post-race and en route to the Cobh railway station this column touched base with a member of Raheeny Shamrocks who seemed intrigued by the size of the Midleton entry for this gruelling test of stamina. When he was told that the club now boasts a senior membership of over two hundred and that twenty plus would be on the start line in Dublin his look of disbelief spoke volumes as to how our club has developed into one of the most vibrant athletic clubs in the country.

Such vibrancy was evidenced in many wonderful performances on the wet and challenging course from the Lower Road to Cobh. Although the official results were not published before this column’s deadline, we can report that Darragh Canavan’s bid to join the sub-three hour marathon elite remains on schedule. Darragh finished in a tremendous 1hr 40mins with a 6:40 min/ mile average. Not too far behind and also on track to break three hours (again!) in Dublin is Neillus Aherne whose 1:43 was (again!)a category prize winning performance. Fergal O’Meara has changed his middle name to PB as almost by prediction he came home in a best of 1:48. Breda Cahill too must be feeling very confident about Dublin with a very assured run which saw her home in a comfortable 1:50. Great runs too were recorded by Deirdre Aherne, Anna Doris, Claire Fitzgerald and Marian Aherne who all broke the tape in and around 1:55.The unassuming man from Clare, John Carey continues to perform in the ascent with yet another best of 1:53. Peter Gunning came home under two hours while Danny McCarthy was very pleased with his 8:20 min/mile average to finish in 2:06. Also delighted with their day’s running were Barry Aherne in 2:08, Paul Kearns 2:09 and both Margaret Jones and Ned Ramsell at 2:10. Margaret Rohan and Vincent Connolly both ran steady races and comfortably broke the 2:20 mark. Denis Kelleher also had a great run just twenty four hours after clocking a 90 min half marathon in Valentia Island and taking a first if the 0-45 category. Full results will be emailed to members and placed on Danny’s blog as soon as BHAA post them.

Continuing our theme of vibrancy there was a wonderful atmosphere of friendliness and welcome last Wednesday night in the Community Centre where we enjoyed our annual open night. New members were given both a céad míle fáilte and an overview of the club. Club captain, Edmund O’Sullivan outlined most eloquently the performance balanced with participation philosophy that underpins our club. Essentially all are welcome irrespective of ability with fun and friendship guaranteed. In fact this guaranteed friendship dimension was best exemplified and perhaps taken too literally by Barry and Sinéad who received pógs and flowers after the recent announcement of their engagement. Vincent Connolly assured new members that although he was not in a position to marry any of them, he would treat them gently. National half-marathon medal winner and sports physio, Neillus Aherne did his own version of stand up as he sensitively promised to heal both body and soul without corrupting either. Club registrar Danny McCarthy and PRO John Cashman explained the logistics of becoming a member. New members are welcome to attend two free training sessions. After that the club will need a registration fee of €30 in order to cover both AAI membership and insurance. Training will take place on Mondays at 6pm in Midleton College on the all-weather track and on Wednesdays in Midleton Community Centre at 6pm for beginners and at 7pm for more seasoned runners. We look forward to welcoming many new members and guarantee you support in your future running development.

Until next time ... keep running
