Monday 30 January 2012

Congrats to all our members who took part in yesterday's Dungarvan 10 Mile Road Race - Our large contingent was appropriately headed by the 2011 Male Athlete of The Year Kevin Smith who recorded a splendid 60:14.
Behind Kevin there were also some outstanding performers including a number who claimed the coveted personal best time - well done to you all!.
A special word is due to Anna Doris who despite suffering a crashing fall very early on battled on to post an excellent sub 70 time. Hope you are feeling better Anna!

Any outstanding annual membership fees may be paid at training tonight to club registrar Danny McCarthy if you are not registered you will NOT be insured after tomorrow

whilst Declan Dorgan will collect the 2 euro training susbscription. Thanks to Declan for collecting throughout the month of January.

Midleton AC Senior Section Mon 23rd January 2012
By Peter Gunning
First a history lesson. In 1592, Art O’Neill and Red Hugh O’Donnell escaped from Dublin Castle and legged it to Glenmalure. Poor Art died of exposure en route while Red Hugh was eventually returned to Donegal minus two frost-bitten big toes. Little did these two know that their early pilot for Prison Break would be celebrated some 520 years later in what has become known as the Art O’Neill Challenge. The first running of the event was in 2009 in aid of the Stuart Mangan Trust. This year our own Margaret Jones completed the hybrid event, 25k run followed by a 30k mountain hike. To make matters even more challenging competitors run through the night, leaving, just like the bold Art and Red Hug, on the stroke of midnight on the 6thJanuary. Well done Margaret on this marvellous achievement. I think next year the club bus just might be heading east...
The crowds flocking to training on both Monday and Wednesday nights include several new members to whom we extend a huge céad mile fáilte. To anybody reading these notes who would like to join a genuinely welcoming running club please feel free to come along on Monday nights to Midleton College all-weather track at 6pm or on Wednesdays indoors at the Community Centre. Just ask for Edmund or Sally (club captains) and your running career will hit the starting blocks. Our club welcomes and treats all athletes equally from the tortoise to the cheetah. For an annual fee of €35 your club membership also includes insurance and registration with Athletics Ireland. Club gear is also available to members at a reduced rate. Danny McCarthy, club registrar will be on hand at each training session with application forms.
While most of us are still trying to work off the yuletide excesses, others have literally hit the ground running. Once again Neilus Aherne heads the New Years Honours list taking gold in the 0-55 Little Island BHAA 4miler. Wearing the MDS Insulations vest, Neilus has started 2012 as he ended 2011 on the middle step of the winner’s podium. Also taking first in a race with record entry of 520 were Anna Doris 0-40 and Helen Gilroy 0-45. Joan McCarthy took silver 0-50 to make it a dominant day once again for our ladies.
Congrats to Marc Dalton and his wife Colette on the arrival of their baby boy. May he have his mom’s intelligence and good looks and his dad’s.... speed? Great news, Marc!
With Ballycotton lurking invitingly on the horizon many of our athletes are rising with the larks and magpies at the weekends for the traditional long runs. Different groups are heading out from the hotel and the community centre on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. Edmund will announce times at training. Alternatively please email PRO John Cashman if you are organising such a run.
Next weekend the first of the John Buckley 10 mile series takes place in Dungarvan at 1pm. On-line entries have now closed. We wish our athletes who will form part of the 1500 strong field every success. The next BHAA event is the 5k cross country in Beaumont Park on Feb 12th.
Until next time .... keep on running

Congratulations to our colleague Margaret Jones who completed the gruelling Art O’Neill Challenge on Saturday morning.

Here is Margaret’s reaction to the occasion –

“The 25k run was fab and the first 2 hrs hike was great but after that it was the toughest thing I’ve ever done never again”.

_ Just a follow up to last week’s report on the Captain’s Run which was organised by our men’s captain Edmond O’Sullivan on Christmas Eve. The sum raised for the local branch of St Vincent De Paul was over 150 euro. Well done Edmond and to all who participated.

Finally, looking to next weekend, a reminder to let us know by Thursday evening if you are organising any long runs (10 miles or more).
The FMC 4 Mile BHAA Road Race also takes place in Little Island at 11am.
You must be registered to be eligable for any prizes in this race.

Please see attached picture Breda Cahill and Fergal O'Meara who were presented with their respective MOST IMPROVED ATHLETE AWARDS by club officers/coaches at last Monday's training.
Both were unfortunately unable to attend our Pre Xmas function but richly deserve their awards in recognition of their form in 2011..

Weekend Training Runs
=================
With Dungarvan and Ballycotton both appearing on the radar, many runners are now undetaking longer runs over the weekend. Whilst many are part of organised groups, there are also some who run on their own,but welcome the chance to run with club colleagues.
It might be an idea to highlight on email/blog over the next few weeks, notice of group runs, stating clearly starting time, location and usual pace per mile.
Drop a a quick line by Thursday evening if you are orgainsing weekend runs.

MIDLETON ATHLETIC CLUB

SOCIAL & PERSONAL

The Captain's Run took place in Walshtown Woods on Xmas Eve at 12 Noon over four miles. This was a handicap run where the slowest predicted time was let off first.

Great fun was had by all who attended with the entry fee being donated in full to St Vincent De Paul. Great refreshments were provided by the Captain and his catering crew.

The winners of the ladies race was Carrie Higgins and the male winner was Barry Aherne.

A big thanks must go to all the brave athletes who took part and especially to Captain Edmond who put in such a huge effort in organising the occasion, providing refreshments and even leading the gathering in a rendition of a famous Christmas Carol. Edmond has strived over the past few months to find a suitable date for this event, but it looks like he has struck a real winner. – Roll on Christmas Eve 2012, healthy fresh air, good craic, smashing refreshments and of course another Christmas Carol. – “Well done captain”.

.

Best Wishes to our colleague Margaret Jones who is undertaking the ‘ART O’NEILL CHALLENGE EARLY ON SATURDAY MORNING, YES REALLY EARLY ON SATURDAY MORNING … read on…

The Art O'Neill Challenge is a 55k adventure from Dublin Castle to Glenmalure Valley starting at midnight, going through dawn and deep into the Wicklow Mountains.
Although the Challenge is one of the toughest events on the calendar, it is achievable by a wide range of folk and we revel in helping everyone achieve personal milestones by finishing this epic journey. The challenge marks a defining moment in Irish history as participants retrace the 1592 prison escape of Red Hugh O Donnell and Art O Neill from Dublin Castle.

Many congratulations are extended to our club vice captain Marc Dalton and his wife Nicola on the recent birth of their first child, a bouncing baby boy. Word has it that Marc is already leading his young son astray by dressing him in gear favouring some soccer team from Old Trafford?
