THE SOCIAL EVENING/WINTER TRAINING PROGRAMME LAUNCH IS ON
WEDNESDAY WEEK - SEPTEMBER 30TH 7PM TO 8PM

New Members Welcome
The club’s winter training programme will be launched next Wednesday evening at Midleton Community Centre when we will host an Open Evening between 7pm and 8pm. It’s an opportunity for all current club members to come together and reflect on a busy season of running and also look ahead to what is in store.

The occasion will afford many of us the opportunity to meet in a ‘non training/non race’ set up. It will also give the chance for potential new members to come along and find out more about the events and happenings associated with Midleton AC. Please ensure to tell your friends, family members or work colleagues who may be interested in becoming involved with the club. Everybody will be welcome.

We will have full details of upcoming races, training times etc. Refreshments will also be served on the night and examples of the benifits of massage will be given by Neilus Aherne.

Training On Monday

In the meantime please note that our regular Monday training has already switched towards winter mode as sessions now take place at Midleton College All Weather surface. This facility is located just off the Dungourney Road as you travel past the end of Connolly Street. The time is as before - 6pm to 7pm.

Race Action

Race action is currently more orientated towards the longer distances, with the Cork Half Marathon behind us and Cork to Cobh ‘15’ miler ahead of us. Furthermore it now appears as if Midleton AC could have as many as 22 athletes wearing the club singlet when the 30th running of the Dublin City Marathon takes place on October 26th.

If you haven’t already entered and you intend participating please note that the closing date of October 5 is fast approaching. You can enter on line by logging on to the Dublin Marathon site. The Midleton AC committee may also still have hard copy application forms.

It’s pretty much the same advice regarding the Sports Supplies Cork to Cobh ‘15’ Mile race on Sunday week, October 4th. Advance entry helps the organisers considerably but it is also of great benefit to us all. The race HQ is at The Montenotte Hotel and it is likely to a very busy place on the morning of the event. So help yourself by logging on to the Cork BHAA web site and getting your entry form in the post to Kevin Cummins without delay.

The Cork to Cobh is a timely test of stamina for athletes and given favourable weather conditions it can be a very scenic and enjoyable run. The race begins at 9am and remember, there is a regular train service back to Kent Station afterwards. Current indications suggest that our club will have a very large entry on the day.

Half Marathon In Blarney

There is some thing about mentioning the words marathon and Cork in the same sentence that seems to roll the clouds way and bring out warm sunshine. Certainly conditions were quite sapping at last Sunday week’s Cork Half Marathon where another huge gathering of 550 took part. In total our club had 26 finishers with stories galore to be told afterwards and some outstanding personal best times being posted.

Noel O’Regan continues to make a major impression on the clock chalking up an eye catching 1:19:39 to bring him home 22nd in the race. Neilius Aherne continues to roll back the years – his 1:21:52 representing another outstanding performance which saw him take home the 2nd prize in the Over 50 category. It was also great to Sean ‘O Sullivan and Marc Dalton back in race mode and both had fine performances on the day. Michael Murphy and Vincent O’Neill could also be very pleased with their excellent outings. Our top lady was the ever progressive Breda Cahill who continued her Dublin countdown with a 1:42:38 finish, just ahead of training colleague Ann Marie Perry.

Good runs were also enjoyed ion the day by Shane Cooney, John Cashman,Kieran Murphy, Mark Walsh, Simon Thompson, Adrian Williams, Marie Murphy, Vincent Connolly, Christine Murphy, Margaret Rohan, Margaret Barry, Kevin Morrisson, Ann Savage, Deirdre Aherne, Mary Walsh, Linda Hegarty, Clare O’Leary, Danny McCarthy, Joan McCarthy and Mary Toher who was completing the course just 24 hours after competing in the full Dingle Marathon.

Marathon Adventures

Already a number of our other athletes have been in marathon action this autumn. Denis Kelleher followed up his venture in Longford by heading for the aforementioned Dingle event where he posted 4:13:56 to complete a very satisfying few weeks. Undaunted by the thought of more Denis headed to Kilkenny (that footballing strong hold) just last Sunday where the marble city hosted a Half Marathon. Here the Midleton club man clocked

At the same time in warmer temperatures both Fergal O’Meara and Tom Cody were familiarising themselves with German hospitality as they took part in the Berlin Marathon. Well done to the lads who had to deal with really warm conditions as they covered the 26.2 miles. Tom came home in just over 3 and a half hours whilst Fergal crossed the line just inside the 4 hour mark (chip times)

Mini Marathon

It’s ladies day on Sunday next as the Evening Echo Mini Marathon takes place. A very large contingent of our club runners is set to participate and we extend every good wish to each of them. A special race office is open until Thursday at Debenhams in the city centre to deal with all enquiries and entries.

Wedding Bells

- A quick word from the social pages to congratulate two of our members who both were in the spotlight last week. In county Carlow Rachael Meally tied the knot whilst nearer to home in Dungourney Maura O’Doherty was also walking up the aisle. We extend every good wish to both Rachael and Maura and their respective husbands.

Final Reminder

We leave you with a final reminder to keep Wednesday next September 30th in the diary.

In the meantime - “Keep on running” !

Well Done To All
Our three most successful ladies in the Ballycotton 5 series who all featured in the individual and overall prizewinners and also got first ladies team. Doing the club proud as usual. Not forgetting all our other ladies many of whom achieved PBs in the series and also those who successfully completed the series for the first time.

Midleton Athletic Club
Senior Section News

After a hectic summer of action, the race scene is certainly calming down at this stage with the main focus now the long distance events over the next few months. Dublin, Berlin and Dingle will have marathon representation from our club, whilst the Cork to Cobh ‘15’ mile race on October 4th is sure to attract plenty of local interest.

Cork Half Marathon

Before that all eyes will be on Blarney next Sunday where the John Buckley Sports sponsored St Finabarr’s AC promoted Cork Half Marathon will take place.

This event is an ideal preparatory race for either the Cork to Cobh challenge or indeed forthcoming marathon endeavours. To date it appears that there has been a large number of entries received, but if you haven’t managed to get your entry form away in the post, entries (25 euro) will be taken up until 10.15am on Sunday next.

The race has an 11am start and headquarters is just adjacent to the line at Blarney GAA Club. As for the course it’s a flat start and finish with the tricky part coming just before the mid way point where a tough hill awaits on the approach to Grenagh village. But what goes up must come down and after the descent it’s pretty much a flat run all the way home. A souvenir medallion is up for grabs for all finishers.

Berlin Bound

Fergal O Meara, Tom Cody and Richard Archer will all fly the local flag in the forthcoming Berlin Marathon, where the course is reported to be one of the best on the European scene. We wish the lads every success and no doubt they will enjoy the occasion and the weekend.

Dingle In The Diary

Dingle on Saturday next is in Denis Kelleher’s diary. Denis remarkably goes into another marathon following a summer of very restricted training due to injury. However, he knows what is ahead as only last Saturday week, he defied his own race predictions when completing the Longford Marathon in 4 hours 19 minutes. A date in Dublin on the last weekend in October is also on the agenda. No doubt Denis will be taking it ‘handy’ on what looks a tough challenge in West Kerry.

Dublin Marathon

It’s also good to see plenty of interest in the Dublin Marathon this year. At present the total number of runners from our club with the event on their radar is in the region of 15 to 20.
Most runners are preparing with a long run at the weekend which is a central requirement of the big race preparation. If you are involved ask around at training regarding the various groups – it is always much easier to cover those long miles in company.

Weekend Away

By all accounts a great weekend was enjoyed by those who travelled to Mayo for the club’s ‘weekend away’. It was by what we hear a hugely active few days co-ordinated by Edmond O’Sullivan and local native Maire Marshall. Apart from participating in the Claremorris ‘5’ mile event, there was a hectic social schedule by day and by night! As for the race action, the event was of high quality and was won by the highly regarded Gerry Ryan. Good performances were enjoyed by all our visiting group.

PTAA 5K

Last Wednesday saw the final evening fixture on the Cork BHAA calendar take place in Togher. The PTAA 5K again saw a big turn out from our club. Well done to Dan Horgan and Kathleen O’Connell who were amongst the category prize winners.

Ballycotton Series Concludes

The curtain came down on the most successful ever Ballycotton Summer Series when the final race took place in the village on August 27. Appropriately the rain clouds blew away to leave Ballycotton looking it’s brilliant best as over 500 runners set an all time record for any race in the series.

Our high flying ladies trio of Michelle Nolan, Sally Drennan and Anne Geary took the club headlines on the night when winning the ladies team prize. Some more familiar names were again making the by now familiar journey on the prize path with Noel O’Regan, Neilius Aherne, Michelle Nolan, Sally Drennan, Elaine Hennessy, Margaret Rohan and Margaret Barry all taking the plaudits for their individual achievements.

At the end of the 4 race series we had Neilius Aherne, John Cashman, Dan Horgan and Alan Kelly making it into the Top 50 and thus collecting the souvineer tee shirts. Ned Ramsell, Trevor Moloney, Brian Healy, Billy O’Sullivan, Niall O’Neill, Kevin O’Reilly, Fergal O’Meara, Danny McCarthy, Kevin Morrisson and Jim McMurtry also completed all four races, showing some great form in the process during the course of the summer months.

Our ladies were always to the fore at the top of the overall individual table with Michelle Nolan 2nd, Ann Geary 4th and Sally Drennan 5th all enjoying a very consistent summer on the roads. Well done also to the following all of whom completed the series, recording some impressive times in the process – Breda Cahill, Anne Marie Perry, Deidere Aherne, Yvonne Kennedy, Elaine Hennessy, Margaret Barry, Margaret Rohan, Caroline Fletcher, Theresa Murphy, Joan McCarthy, Olive Hallahan, Claire O’Leary, Marie McGrath and Mary Keane.
