All Roads Lead To Carrigtwohill

Carrigtwohill will be the focus of attention on this Wednesday evening, July
28th as the new 5K Road Race promises to be a great sporting and social
occasion. A number of our club members are involved in the organising and
helping in this event. Paul Kierans has been very much to the fore in
promoting this fixture, the headquarters for which is located in the
splendid grounds of Barryscourt Castle. It’s certainly going to be an
occasion for all the family as representatives from the O.P.W will also be
present to guide people around this famous land mark.
As for the race itself, action will begin at 8pm but participants are urged
to come along from 6.30p onwards, sign up and enjoy the atmosphere of what
is going to be an unique fixture.
Entry fee is 7 euro. All proceeds will go towards Carrigtwohill Community
Care, Meals On Wheels and C.A.S.A. The race is being organised with the
help and co-operation of Ballycotton Running Promotions and East Cork A.C.

Ballycotton Series
- Now to what has happened already and a brief summary of the last few
weeks.
The Ballycotton Series continued last Thursday and on what was an near
perfect evening for running there were again some excellent displays by our
athletes in various sectors of the field. John O’Connell who is running
superbly at the moment recorded a seasonal best for the 5 mile distance
whilst new comer Eric Owers also had a superb outing clocking 31:51. Brian
Nolan was another man in top form recording an eye catching 33:03 whilst
Patsy Keane continues to make major strides as emphasized by his 34:59
finish in Churchtown South.

Our leading lady Michelle Nolan has long term marathon plans with Dublin on
the radar but she is currently enjoying a glorious spell over the shorter
distances as reflected by breaking 31 minutes to consolidate her position
overall in the Summer Series.
Noel O’Regan led our 61 contingent home in 29:05, followed by Donal
Broderick in 30:20 and young David Murphy who is making a splendid
impression on the local running scene.
The concluding fixture in the Series is in Ballycotton on Thursday August
26th beginning at 7.30pm.

Ballinrostig Race
Unfortunately the entry in the new race in Ballinrostig on Sunday last wasn’t
as large as expected and it didn’t reflect the great preparatory work that
had been done by the local organisers in advance. From a Midleton club
point of view the results are notable for a number of reasons.

Top performer was John O’Connell following up his fine run in Churchtown by
negotiating this testing new course in 25:57. Next home was Peter Gunning
who is making steady progress back to top form, whilst it was great to see
Sean O’Sullivan back on the road after a long term injury. The popular
Ballymacoda resident crossed the line in 27:21. Ned Ramsell, Vincent O’Neill,
Donie O’Connell Danny Mc Carthy and Paul Kierans were amongst the men to
enjoy good outings.
Our ladies too were in good form – Marian Ahern, Anne Marie Perry, Deirdre
Aherne, Caroline Fletcher, Trish Murphy, Ann Savage, Camilla O’Connor ,Joan
Mc Carthy and Sile Kierans amongst those to enjoy steady performances.
On the day many of contingent which numbered 28 were on the honours list.
Well done to all! FULL RESULTS BELOW

Youghal – 4 Miler
A week earlier conditions were rather miserable but numbers were greater for
another new event by the coast, the Youghal ‘4’ Mile race. Here Kevin
Cooney, Philip Mullane and Marion Cotter were amongst our runners to turn in
good displays over a tough course on a day when Eric Owers was our first
runner home in an impressive time of 26:03 which meant he finished in a very
creditable 35th place overall.
As regards the honours Breda Cahill was our top lady and 6th overall,
Margaret Twohig in a splendid run of form was the leading lady Over 40 ,
another great achievement for Margaret who only joined our club last autumn.

Donoughmore
Margaret’s Youghal performance was even more laudable when one considers
that less than 48 hours earlier she came home 3rd lady in the Over 40’s in
the Donoughmore ‘7’, in what was her first outing over the distance.
The Donoughmore race was notable for the fact that Midleton AC came home
with plenty of prizes. Outstanding displays came from amongst others Donal
Broderick, Neilus Aherne, Michelle Nolan (2nd lady overall), whilst our mens
team were third prize winners overall.

Churchtown South Could Welcome Record Entry

Athletics – John Cashman (Evening Echo Tuesday July 20th)

Thursday’s third leg of the Ballycotton ‘5’ Mile Summer Road Race Series could see a record entry go to the start line in Churchtown South. Time was when July meant a slight drop in numbers overall due to the holiday season, but such has been the surge in road running in recent times that even allowing for seasonal vacations records are being broken on a regular basis. Last year’s record number of 472 at the venue looks likely to be surpassed.

Already the 500 mark has been exceeded in the opening 2 races of the Series meaning new highs been set in Ballyandreen and Shanagarry. The latter race held on the fourth Thursday of June recorded a finishing figure of 502, which represented an increase of 32 on last year’s entry.

A glance at the finishing statistics continue to support the trend that the current generation of competitors are not keeping pace with their fore runners. Twenty years ago in the corresponding Shanagarry 5 Miler when 225 crossed the line, the first 4 runners clocked under 25 minutes and 73 came home under the 30 minute mark. Compare this to last month when the race had over twice the entry, nobody broke 25 minutes whilst only 35 crossed line in under 30 minutes. Twenty years earlier 73 succeeded in breaking that barrier.

What is even more enlightening are the stats’ from ten years earlier. On the night just 40 runners took part in the 1980 race, the third staging of the event. Here like 1990 4 runners were home under 25 minutes and in total 26 crossed the line in sub 30 minutes. Thirty years on last month’s Shanagarry race had a mere 9 more competitors home under the half hour mark despite an entry which had increased by 462.

Clearly in those days of the early eighties road racing featured a very elite group of runners. Today the sporting landscape has changed dramatically with a whole new generation of people of varying age and fitness levels being attracted to road running. Whilst the competition may not be as fierce up front, the enjoyment and the thrill of taking part have certainly surged throughout the field.

The man currently setting the standards for all others to chase is James McCarthy of East Cork AC. He has been in tremendous form this year and continued his winning sequence by capturing top honours in last Friday’s Donoughmore ‘7’ before quickly following up with a second placed finish behind Cork City Marathon winner Sergiu Ciobanu in Youghal’s new 4 mile race on Sunday afternoon.

James has triumphed in the opening two races of this year’s Ballycotton Series and has been followed home on both events by Martin McCarthy of St Finbarr’s and last year’s Churchtown South winner Sean McGrath. Whilst the margin between first and second stood at 27 seconds in the opening fixture, the gap narrowed to just 6 seconds last month in Shanagarry.

Neither of the McCarthy’s competed in Churchtown South last year, the most recent form line for the course showing James covering the route two years ago in 26:45 when he finished in third position.

As regards the ladies standings, Shanagarry’s first, second and third females home, namely Rhona Lynch, Niamh Walshe and Michelle Nolan occupy the top places in the overall leader board. Rhona has been the dominant lady during the summer months over the past few years and won at the Churchtown South venue a year ago in an excellent 29:29. Both Niamh and Michelle are enjoying their best ever seasons and have been in the honours list in almost every race in which they have competed to date during 2010. If the top 3, as expected, participate in the remaining two races, they look odds on to retain their respective overall positions.

With forecasts indicate a general improvement in weather by race day the scene is set for what promises to be a spectacular night of running at the Churchtown South venue. The course is regarded by some observers as the fastest of the Summer Series, however this two lap route which includes a gradual climb as athletes enter the village can be somewhat deceptive.

Those travelling to the race are advised by Ballycotton Running Promotions to allow plenty of time in advance of the 8pm start. Athletes who have competed in both races to date will be given the number reflecting their overall position in the Series, whilst separate queues will operate for the other participants.

Midleton AC
Senior Section News
As we reach mid July, there are a host of races on the diary over the next few weeks. A feature of this period is that three new events will be held before the end of the month with Youghal, Ballinrostig and Carrigtwohill all hosting new fixtures in an exciting ten day period.
Donoughmore ‘7’
Before all of that it’s destination Donoughmore next Friday July 16th for the famous 7 miler organised by the energetic local athletic club. It’s been part and parcel of the summer fixture list for many years and although the task ahead is not the easiest the challenge of the race makes it a must for many local runners.
I’m going to take the liberty of dropping into John Desmond’s excellent Cork Running blog for the best advice as to how to get to the venue and the course summary. Have a read of the brief summary below and consider car pooling for this race. Check around and see who is making the journey from our club.

Directions...Donoughmore is about 15 miles NW of Cork City. If you are coming out the Ballincollig bypass or the Carrigrohane straight, look for directions for Nad / Banteer / Kanturk. If you follow the signposts, you should end up on the R579 road. Stay on this road for about 10 miles and keep a lookout for the turn off right to Donoughmore. The village is about 2 miles off the R579 road.
Course....First of all, it is a tough enough course. Plenty of hill,s but nothing too serious. Some people may find 7 miles to be a bit long but it is only three quarters of a mile beyond the 10 km distance so it's not so bad. The race is on quiet country roads and if you get a nice sunny Summers evening, there are nice views of the Boggeragh Mountains nearby.

Youghal 4 Miler
Next on the list is the first of the three new races which takes place on Sunday July 18th in Youghal. It’s a fund raiser in aid of Marymount Hospice and Martin Drake and his team have put a huge effort into organising this fixture which will begin at 2pm from Farrell’s Summerfield. Entry fee is 10 euro - there is the promise of loads of prizes on offer. You can enter from 12 noon onwards at Farrell’s Bar and this will also be the venue for post race refreshments. The finish line is at the same point as the recent Emer Casey 10K on the front Strand.

Churchtown South
After Sunday all roads will lead to Churchtown South for race 3 in the Ballycotton Summer Series on Thursday 22nd - at present 256 men and 91 women have completed the opening 2 races. Michelle Nolan heads our ladies contingent in a superb 3rd place overall with Sally Drennan currently lying in 12th. The top 15 women overall will be awarded the special commemorative tee shirts. Currently three more of our leading ladies Marion Aherne, Breda Cahill and Caroline Geary are just outside the top 15.

In the men’s Noel O’Regan leads the way in what is also a very competitive chase for the top 50 tee shirts. Noel is currently 19th with star junior athlete David Murphy in 37th, followed by Donal Broderick in 43rd and Mickey O’Connell 45th. Neilus Aherne is lurking just outside the top 50 (and ready to pounce). Starting time in Churchtown South is 8pm.

Ballinrostig 4 Miler

Then on Sunday July 25th, it’s off to Ballinrostig where there is a 12 noon start for the inaugural 4 mile race which is being held in conjunction with the Vintage Festival Day. Local business man Michael Murphy has put in a lot of work in organising the event with the help of members of the Ballycotton Running Promotions team. There is fast start and fast finish to the route with a testing climb after mile 1.

Carrigtwohill 5K

On the following Wednesday (July 28th) the new Carrigtwohill 5K will be held over a 2 lap course close to Barryscourt Castle. Again it appears as if a great effort has been put in organising this race with some of our club members very much involved. In fact Paul Kierans has kindly invited us to enjoy a sneak preview of the course in advance of the big night. So, make a date on Tuesday July 20 at Barryscourt Castle. Paul’s advice is
“From Midleton take 1st exit for Carrigtwohill, take first road left at roundabout and then next right you arrive at entrance to Castle. Any queries please call me @ 086-8208799”.

Remember the race itself has an 8pm start on Wednesday July 28th.

Kinsale Regatta's 5 Miler
The organisers of the Kinsale Regatta 5 Mile Race have issued the following details regarding their event which takes place just 2 days later. Start time is 8pm – Entry fee is 10 euro with 5 euro from each entry being donated to Marymount Hospice. Entries will be taken at Kinsale GAA Grounds, where the race will also start. The finish will be in the town centre next to the Bank of Ireland branch.

So overall a hectic few weeks of races on the horizon and even allowing for the summer holidays there is the chance to catch a race somewhere relatively local.

August will also be busy with the Novartis 5K an early engagement on the Wednesday following Kinsale on Wednesday 7th and another BHAA fixture the Army/Navy 5 miler going ahead on the following Wednesday. We will have much more about the August fixture list in our next despatch. Incidentally word has that a new race is on the horizon in Cloyne in early September – watch this space!

Race Reviews

Firstly we go to Macroom and the arrival of close on 700 runners to the mid Cork town for the Daniel Kingston Memorial 5K Race. Our club was well represented in this new fixture and we had many runners who recorded impressive times including Kevin Smith, Marc Dalton, John O’Connell, Brian Nolan, Ned Ramsell, Pater Gunning, John Carey, Fergal O’Meara and Yvonne Cashman.
Donal Broderick chalked up a superb18:06 to win the Over 40’s whilst Sally Drennan and Helen Geary were both in the Over 40’s honours list finishing second and third respectively. The Midleton UDC team regular prize winners were again on the podium taking the second prize in Grade A. Overall an enjoyable night was had by all, even if the course was more testing than anticipated.

Twenty four hours later Marie Murphy was in the prizes as she kept the club flag flying with a fine performance in the Ballinscarthy 10K race. Well done Marie!

Hectic Week

Three races in 3 days gave our club members plenty of choice last week with Ovens, Whitegate and Dungarvan all welcoming Midleton runners.

EMC 5K

A big contingent from our club travelled to the BHAA fixture in Ovens where the entry was somewhat smaller than anticipated. Our crew certainly made their mark with Kevin Smith producing the performance of the night when coming home as the 3rd registered runner and in process setting a new pb of 17:32 (5:39 mile pace). Kevin was followed home in 7th overall (4th place registered runner) by Noel O’Regan with an excellent time of 17:48, whilst club mate Donal Broderick, currently in splendid from won the 2nd prize in the Over 40 category after an 18:09 finish. Marc Dalton and Mickey O’Connell two more runners in a rich vein of form were next home both inside the 19 minute barrier. Edmond O’Sullivan is also in top form presently and his efforts were again rewarded with a 3rd placed finish in the Over 45’s.

Michelle Nolan continues to shine in the ladies events and in Ovens her impressive finishing time of 19:06 secured a splendid 2nd place overall in the ladies race. A further boost as she sets her sights on cementing her high standing in the Ballycotton Series.

Meantime the team prizes created some debate and interest, followed by a lot of a “ball hopping” on the return journey. Suffice to say we congratulate those who received their prizes for their outstanding performances on the night! (The transfer window is open again and a lot deals could be brewing)

Corkbeg 5 Miler

A damp Thursday evening did not deter a record entry from heading to Whitegate for the annual Corkbeg ‘5’ just 24 hours after the Ovens race. For the second night in succession Kevin Smith stole the show with another personal best performance of 28:52. Amongst our other impressive performers were John O’Connell (32:15) newcomer Karol Watson (32:47) and Billy O’Sullivan (32:56). Vincent O’Neill, Danny McCarthy, John O’Halloran (3rd Over 55), Donie O’Connell (3rd Over 60) Marie McGrath, Mary O’Keeffe (3rd Over 40), Barbara O’Connor and Mary Keane all enjoyed steady runs whilst Shirley Garde was amongst our crew to record a coveted personal best time for the distance. - A special word of congratulations to Sally Drennan and Joan McCarthy who were both category winners. Our ladies teams were also placed 1st and 3rd overall.

Dungarvan

Across the county bounds in the Deise county, Friday’s Dungarvan ‘5’ Mile Race saw the host club West Waterford dominate the entry list. However our travelling part of 5 returned with positive memories after chalking up eye catching times.

Donal Broderick reached a season land mark when breaking the 30 minute mark, finishing in 29:50, whilst Marc Dalton continued his upward spiral by clocking 31:02. Brian Nolan fresh his cycling exploits around the ring Of Kerry continues to make impressive progress without the bike as his 34:09 time suggests. Elsewhere John Carey is also eating up the seconds after recording 36:41 whilst Marie Murphy followed her fine run of a week earlier by recording 38:54.

Bus To Ardmore
Incidentally the final race in the West Waterford Summer Series is listed for Ardmore (5Miles). The Social Committee are exploring the option of running a bus to the venue- if you wish to be part of that adventure, please contact Kevin Smith or any member of the committee.

Midleton Open Sports
Nearer at hand our colleagues in the Midleton Juvenile Club are hosting their annual Open Sports on Sunday next July 18th. Help is needed with stewarding for the big day. Kevin Smith or Joan Hough are the contacts if you can lend a hand from approx 1pm to 4pm at the CBS Grounds.

Lanzarote Bound
The organisers of the club trip to Lanzarote are hoping to conclude arrangements in the near future. Currently approx 25 have confirmed that they are travelling – if you wish to join them please contact Marc Dalton or Edmond O’Sullivan.

Membership
A subtle reminder that any membership fees outstanding should be paid by this week to registrar Danny McCarthy. The club will be registering new arrivals or returning colleagues within the next few days.
Remember it is compulsory to be a fully paid up member of the club if you wish to compete or train under the name of Midleton AC.
Please do NOT enter a race in the name of Midleton AC if you are NOT a registered member
as this makes a big difference in team placings and can be very embarrassing for the club having to hand back prizes .
Training
- Training as usual on Monday from 6pm at Midleton CBS and on Tuesday meet at Community Centre – 7pm. A heart monitor was found in the CBS Grounds after a recent training session – please contact me back on e mail if it is yours.

Sympathy

Finally, this week on a sad note, the sympathy of the entire club is extended to our friend and colleague Kevin Cooney on the recent passing of his wife Mary, a former member of our club. May she rest in peace.

-----Midleton’s Juvenile Athletes Keep On Winning

Athletics – John Cashman -

EVENING ECHO - SAT JULY 3RD

Winning is a very good habit and these days Midleton AC seem to have it in abundance. With the adult wing of the club boasting it’s biggest ever membership success is arriving on a weekly basis and there just seems to be no stopping the talented group of under age athletes that are coming through the ranks.

The most recent notable feats were recorded at the Under 12-Under 19 Munster Track & Field Championships which saw the club proudly return with 9 medals.

On the track Daniel Colbert was the undoubted star performer winning gold, silver and bronze medals in the Under 17 age bracket. It was very much case of hard work paying dividends for Daniel who missed most of last season through injury but battled back to peak form following a strenuous training programme. A gold medal in the 100 meters hurdles where a time of 14:88 was clocked represents a fabulous performance for a young man that looks to have a bright future in the sport.

Daniel went on to perform with great distinction in the flat, capturing a silver medal in the 100 meter final (recording 12:03) and subsequently earning a bronze medal for his 23:68 time in the 200 meters final.

The name of Eoin Casey is another which is grabbing the limelight in local athletics circles. A third placed finish recording 4:13:95 in a highly competitive 1,500 meters finals indicates further the potential of this very promising young runner.
Inside in the field events Midleton AC representatives performed with great distinction, many returning home with symbols of their success.

Al round sports star Seadnaidh Smyth who is also noted for his GAA and soccer talents scooped 2 medals./ Gold came in the javelin where he produced a wonderful last throw of 32.04 meters to win, whilst a throw of 11.06 secured the silver medal in the shot putt.
Under 15 starlet Aidean Hallahan, who is All Ireland throwing champion, topped thel eader board in the shot putt securing gold with a throw of 10.05 meters. She also displayed her qualities with a fourth placed finish in the discus.

There was cause for double celebration in the Hallahan household when Aidean’s brother Diarmuid threw the discus 33.03 meters thereby ensuring the silver medal and then promptly followed up with a bronze winning performance in the hammer. Proving his all round talent for the field events, Dairmuid finished fourth in the discus competition.

Meantime one of Midleton’s outstanding Under 12 performers secured a silver medal in the shot putt. Cleeva Motherway added to her growing reputation with a throw of 8.29 meters. Caolan O’Brien was equally impressive when winning the silver at Under 13 level thanks to a throw of 9.37 meters.

Elsewhere under 12 600 meters runner Tara O’Keeffe clocked up a coveted personal best of 1:53:09 to come home fourth in the final, where she was followed by club mate Jessica Strain. Amongst the others to catch the eye in the Midleton singlet on finals day were Andrew Ryan in the Under 12 sprint, Dara Thompson and Liam Stack in the Under 12 600 meters final and Caoilinn Hickey who ran very consistently in both the Under 14 800 and 1,500 meters races.

In the Under 12 boys relay Liam Stack, Dara Thompson, Andrew Rayn, Joshua Allen and Jack Northridge showed great from to qualify for the National Relay Championships which will be held in Tullamore at the end of this month.

Meantime Midleton’s individual athletes will be hoping to bring more medals when they meet the best athletes in the land at the National Championships which will also be held in Tullamore over the next two weekends.
