WEEKEND RUNAROUND

DUNGARVAN 10

Best of luck to all our members taking part in this race on Sunday. Be sure and have a look here http://munsterrunning.blogspot.ie/  to see the slight changes they have made to the course.

1) Because of road works, the start has moved closer about 400m to the east. This cuts out a small hill but that's a small issue coming so early in the race.

2) There is a sharp left bend at 400m. Runners on a road behave like a fluid in a pipe....any bends and it slows. Watch for congestion here.

3) See the red arrows. You head out the Cork road like before. Turn right and pass the 2 mile mark. This time, instead of running straight, you turn right and past the finish line. Then you head west and you're back on the usual route.

4) See blue arrows. In previous years, you stayed inside the hard shoulder of the main road all the way to the roundabout. This year, you turn off right instead as you approach the town. A slight diversion to make up the 10 miles.

Congratulations Aideen

A big congratulations to club member Aideen Hallihan who received an Aspiring Athlete Award from the Cork County Board last Friday.

DUNGARVAN 10 MILE

COURSE RECORDS COULD BE IN DANGER.
The elite field of athletes for Sundays showdown is second to none and that's in both Ladies and Men's. The hard working race team have been working away behind the scenes in securing yet again many of the big name's on the Irish road racing scene for the event, and they are guaranteeing the public a race that will be a spectacular sight for those who come along to view it with what promises to be a battle royal for the top placing. We have not one but two international cross country athletes who performed admirably at the European cross in December in Bulgaria Mick Clohisey Raheny Shamrocks AC was the team captain for the championships and he is the current Irish national cross country champion . Mick is also the current national half marathon champions with a winning time of 65 minutes. Mark Hanrahan Leevale AC , also a member of the Irish cross country team in Bulgaria is participating, Mark is the current national 10k Irish champion won in a time of 30.44 ,he is the current Cork senior cross country champion. Galway's international athlete Garry Thornton is a sub 49 minute ten mile athlete, Gary has a marathon p.b. of 2.17 and has ran 63 minute for the half, That's quality. winner of the race in 2012 in a course record time of 49.25 Sean Hehir, a marathon pb of 2.17 and a half marathon best of 65 minutes. along with a host of excellent club athletes including James Mc Carthy of East Cork AC ,Micheal Mac Diarmada Clonliffe Harriers a 2.25 marathon runner. In the ladies race we have Siobhan O Doherty a winner of the ladies Dublin mini marathon Siobhan has a 10 mile pb of 57.32 a member of the Irish cross country team who took part in the European championships in December in Bulgaria she is the only lady to have won the Dungarvan 10 on 3 occasions when winning in 2010,2011 and 2014 .If the Ladies coarse record is to be broken it could very well fall to a 10 mile first timer as Irish international athlete Mary Cullen who is coached by Ray Treacy comes into the race with a superb 5 mile pb of 25.35,This will be Mary's first attempt over the 10 mile distance. The Sligo AC athlete is the Irish record holder over 3.000 meters , She was a 4th place finisher at the European cross country in 2008.

Cloyne 4Km

Another Win for a Midleton AC woman

Another huge crowd turned out Sunday morning for the Cloyne 4Km. A total of 281 competed on what was a lovely morning for a run.
It was great to see Helen Gilroy coming back into her own and making it a great start to the new year by coming 1st Lady (16.04). This was Helen's first race after a very nasty injury and she is only in the early stages of training. She was closely followed by the constantly improving Eileen Leahy(16.28) who was 2nd Lady and our next lady was Vicki Cleary (16.52) who finished a very close 4th lady with another fine run.
Our first man was the flying Paul Spiteri (14.48) finishing 11th overall and was closely followed by Mike Cremin (14.57) 14th overall. Next came John Dunphy 15.30 who is just getting back to full training also. Well done to all our members who took part. It Takes a Midleton AC woman to beat the Cats

Margaret Jones ventured up to Kilkenny on Sat morning to take part in het first ever Park Run on a fine frosty morning. Not knowing her opposition or the course very well being the wise woman she is she started near the back and was able to enjoy picking people off all the way. It was a three loop course with a fine hill to be repeated the three times. She was the 1st Lady (21mins) home and finished 10th overall out of a field of one hundred and seventy two. She achieved an age graded score of 76.23%. Now if we could only get our hurlers to do the same. Well done Margaret and there is no truth in the rumour that she was only showing off for her grandson Dylan who was there supporting her.

Under 23 and Jnr All Ireland Indoors

Best of luck to Daniel Colbert who will be competing in the All Ireland u23 400m Indoor Championships in Athlone next Sunday. You can watch this live at http://www.athleticsireland.ie/news/live-streaming-glohealth-junior-and-u23-championships where full timetable etc is available.

WEEKEND RUNAROUND

FMC 4 Mile Little Island

Around five hundred and twenty runners took part in this race on Sunday morning. The start was delayed due to ice on the course and the organisers wanting it to be safe reverted back to the original 4 mile route instead of the planned 6km. This was the 33rd running of this race FMC being one of the first BHAA races in Cork.
We had a great crew out both running and supporting. A big thanks to all the supporters (too many to name) who came out some just doing their long runs and other there to support. Every cheer counts.
All our runners seemed to have good runs despite many being in the middle of hard training Our first man home was Brian Harty and our first lady was Anna Doris who finished 2nd Lady overall which was a great debut for Edmond's new BHAA team Midleton Town Council. Other prize winners from the club were Marie Gillman 1st O/50. Mary O'Keeffe 3rd O/45 and Joan McCarthy 3rd O/55. Our men also were in the prizes with John Cashman 3rd O/50 and John O'Halloran 3rd O/60. Danny

The start and finish will be in approximately the same locations but the race will now go left into Eastgate Business Park, do a loop and come back out to the main road.
This is always a busy race so please come early to registration which opens at 9.30am at the Little Island Sports Hall. The start is still roughly a mile from registration.

Cross Country BHAA

A total of one hundred and eighty five runner took part in this race. It is the only cross country race on the BHAA calendar and was in danger of being dropped but with the huge crowd there today its future is secure. We had a fine crew out and all of them did very well. It is a very tough three loop course with a steep downhill over very rough surface and an even tougher uphill as can be seen from the photos.
Our first man home was Brian Harty who had a superb run and finished 12th overall. Our first lady was Marie Gillman who was 6th lady overall and took 2nd O/50 prize. Our other prize winners were John Cashman 3rd O/50 and Donie O'Connell 2nd O/60. It was also great to see John Dunphy back in action and running well whilst Michael McNamara and Paul Kearns again showed how well the have taken to cross country.

BANDON 5Mile

The Day Of The Diehards

The annual Bandon 5 mile took place new years day in very bad conditions. The morning started bad and continued that way with wind and rain all the way. We had some very brave souls out there and everyone acquitted themselves very well. Our first runner home was Eugene McCarthy in a time of 30.58 .Then came our first lady Anna Doris in 32.06 she had a fine run coming 5th Lady overall and 1st O/40 next came Francis Maunsell having another fine run in 32.42. These are fine time especially considering the conditions out there and that their is an uphill of over a mile from two to three. Donie O'Connell and Bernie Twomey both finished close together in just over the forty minute mark. For me the run of the day must go the Kathleen O'Connell who has not run this distance in over two years and made her comeback today with an injury free run and managing to break the fifty minute mark as well. Welcome back Kathleen its a great start to the new year.
Danny
