Help Needed On Marathon Sunday For Marathon

As you know the Cork City marathon, half marathon and relay takes place this Sunday 4th. June.
All athletics clubs in Cork have been asked by the Cork County Athletics Board to provide stewards to help on the day.  Midleton AC already has some great volunteers who help every year, but if there is anyone else in a position to steward it would be greatly appreciated.
Please  either let me (Sally) know, or contact  Pat Walsh (Cork County Board AAI) who can be reached on 087 2354836 as soon as possible.
Thank you.
Best regards,
Midleton AC
John Buckley 5Km

The John Buckley 5Km took place Tuesday evening on the Marina circuit. Whilst many are preparing for the Cork Marathon, Half Marathon and Relays next Sunday there was a huge turnout of runners with a total of nine hundred and eighteen in all. There was a fine representation from Midleton AC there. Shane Fitzgerald Foley came home in a time of 18.01 making one  realize how important seconds are in running. Our  prize winners of the night were Marie Gillman who took 1st O/50 and our coach Edmond O'Sullivan who excels at these shorter distances where he took the highly competitive 1st O/55. A big congrats also to Ger O'Regan who got a PB of 19.15.
Special mention must go to Kelly Hurton from our C2 5K group who did her first race having been unable to make Ballintotis. when the rest made their debuts.

Ballyandreen 5

Sinead Keavney 1st Lady, Helen Gilroy 1st O/50 (4th overall) sets a new course record and Midleton AC Ladies 1st Team

What a great night for our club with some fantastic running all round. Our ladies excelled themselves with an incredible run from Sinead Keavney knocking 1.17 off her PB to finish in a time of 30.10 leading the Midleton AC crew home and that includes the men. Helen Gilroy also had an incredible run finishing 4th overall and 1st O/50 where she set a new course record for her category. To crown it off then the two ladies along with Eileen Leahy took 1st Team for Midleton AC. The icing on the cake then was Louise Barry got 3rd O/35, Michelle McGrath 2nd O/45, Marie Gillman 2nd O/50 and Mary O'Keeffe 3rd O/50. Our men also had fine runs with Neilus Aherne coming 1st O/60. Well done all.
A special mention also for some other heroines from our club who stopped and gave up their times to help Gerry Forde when he fell out of his wheelchair around the two and a half mile mark. They easily lost three to four minutes off their time and also to the Ballintotis athletes who also gave up their times when they stopped to help. Ye all did your clubs proud.

Riga Marathon

Report from Christopher McCarthy

The 1st thing to know about Riga is that the weather is extremely changeable.  It was snowing heavily 4 days before the Marathon.  2 days after the Marathon there was a thunderstorm & torrential downpour.  Locals often appear to be dressed in too many layers for the current conditions as though they expect temperatures to plummet at any moment.

The Marathon itself took place in over 20C heat accompanied by beaming sunshine.  Conditions perfect for the crowds of spectators but brutally warm to run in & it got hotter & hotter as midday approached.  This took a huge toll on me in the last few kilometres.

It's a surprisingly big event.  Between a 6k, 10k, Half & Full there were over 25,000 participants from 70 countries.  There is beautiful scenery along the way with perhaps the highlight being the Freedom Monument - a 42 Metre high Statue commemorating independence & Latvian sovereignty which is the beating heart of the city.

I had no intentions of running a PB due to excessive work & college commitments & an injury picked up just before the Youghal 5k in April.  This allowed me to spend more time 'sightseeing' during the race.  There were drummers, cheerleaders & Latvian folk dancers lining busy sections of the route all adding to the experience.  In terms of architecture Riga has the largest number of Jugenstil buildings in the world.  These buildings closing in over cobbled streets often have a fairy tale quality.

I registered for the race back in October 2016 & it cost €29.  In terms of value for money for full Marathons I don't believe there is a better deal available anywhere in the world.

This is on next Friday evening and is certainly well worth supporting . Its one of the best races around with a great course and an equally great spread after.

WEEKEND RUNAROUND

Half Marathon Weekend

Maybe we should call this Half Marathon Weekend with so many going on. First we have David Moynihan having a great run in Killarney with a time of 1.26.20 and that was after taking a wrong turn. A fine run indeed and he was injured two weeks ago.

Mark O'Reilly did the River Moy Half Marathon and whilst starting out hoping for a PB things did not go his way and rather than just plodding on he decided to hold back and help his sister get a PB which she did. Fair play Mark it is always nice to help others achieve a PB.

Sunday saw the Bay Run Half Marathon where we had fine runs from Esther Murphy and Amanda Cooney.

Kevin Smith also had another good run coming home in 90 Min showing his preparation for Dublin is well on track

Continuing with Half Marathons Margaret Jones headed to Castlecomer, Co Killkenny to do a 10 Mile and then decided to do the Half Marathon instead. It was one of the toughest courses she had ever ran and she has done a lot of courses. She is trilled with her time of 1.44.25 and delighted with the help from her grandson who ran the last couple of hundred meters with her.

Riga Marathon

Congrats to Christopher McCarthy who completed the Riga Marathon in around 3.55 in the blazing sunshine. Full report to follow later.

RIGA MARATHON

Best of luck to club member Christopher McCarthy who is doing the Riga Marathon in Latvia on Sunday. Report to follow.

Midleton 5 “Thank You” Night
9pm Saturday 13th May in The Maple
Finger food
Spot prize raffle for race volunteers
All race volunteers & Midleton AC members welcome

Our recent Midleton 5 race was a big success with huge participation and great feedback. The race could not take place without the help of volunteers and it certainly wouldn’t have been the success it was without the fantastic efforts of all on the night……be it stewarding, registration, packing bags, bringing food, serving food, cheering runners….it all counts.

As a very small token of appreciation compared with the effort put in, the race and club committees wish to invite all volunteers and members to pop into the Maple on Saturday night at 9pm, where there will be some finger food and a raffle for spot prizes.

Bantry to Ballina

Best of luck to all our members running this weekend. We have members doing the "Bay Run" Half Marathon and also a member doing a half in Ballina.
Lots of races coming up next week. A 5Km in Glanmire Tuesday Fota 5km on Thursday and Kilcredan 5km on Friday which is always a great run (free buff for all runners) with a great spread and prizes after.
