Battle Of Clontarf

Fionan O'hAodain Reports

I tried out the Battle of Clontarf 10 mile race today. The weather conditions were poor enough with a strong wind and rain, but it was still a nice change from the usual courses. It was two laps of St. Anne's Park and it was organised by Raheny Shamrocks.
Some of the course was across grass which wasn't long turning to mud, but it was still a good experience. Either way, I got around it in 65 mins, so I was very happy with that.   Fionan

Munster Road Racing Championships

Bronze and Gold for Ann Geary

Silver for Barry O'Shea

These took place in Castlelyons on Easter Monday ( 4Miles). We had three runners representing the club which was disappointing but totally understandable due to the day that was in in and people having family commitments etc.. It really is not a good day for such races and should be looked at by the Munster Council for next year.

It was wet and miserable out there but our crew acquitted themselves really well. First off was Ann Geary who finished 6th overall and came 4th in the Novice and took BRONZE by coming 3rd O/35 she also got Gold with the Cork Ladies Novice County Team.. Ann also got a PB up on the PB she got on the same course two weeks ago.

In the men's race Barry O'Shea got Silver with the Cork County Men's Novice Team and  he had a fantastic run finishing in 21+ and getting a PB to boot. Mark O'Reilly had a great run also finishing over a minute up on his time of two weeks ago.

The next championship race is the East Cork Roads in Ballynoe on the 26th April and hopefully we will have a big crew out there. Danny

Ballybunnion Half Marathon

We had one entry here today Maire Walsh but unfortunately she had to drop out after a mile due to injury. Everyone wishes her a very speedy recovery.

Ballybunion 10Km

Report from Dan Twohig

Dan and Siobhan Twohig took on this unique course that winds through the north Kerry countryside along the Wild Atlantic Way, they completed the 10Km road race. There was challenging hills interspersed along the route and the weather was perfect for a great day out Cheers Dan.

Running Workshop

Just a few rough shots from the Running Workshop given by Aoife Cooke and Kieran McKeown for the club this weekend.
It really was an excellent workshop and from one who has attended many of these down the years from coaching seminars to running workshops this rates amongst the best I have ever attended.

Aoife and Kieran were totally runner friendly and were happy to answer any questions in a friendly and helpful manner. Unfortunately the attendance was on the low side but that is totally understandable due to the change of date and the weekend that is in it.
I urge those that couldn't make it to talk to those that did attend and maybe another session could be organised for later in the season. Once again a huge thank you to Louise Barry who organised the whole thing and even the venue was fantastic. Anyone else who has ideas for the club please come and talk to any committee member. Remember it is your club and your ideas count.
Stars out of five. FIVE  Danny

Ballintotis Update

On line entry for this year's Ballintotis 4 Mile Road Race is now open and will remain open until April 16th  The organisers would ask as many people as possible to register in advance. By doing so, you will make life easier for both the committee and for yourself on the day of the race. Please log on to www.ballintotis.com and follow the link to enter.  Race numbers can be collected between 5pm and 7pm on Wednesday April 18 or from 1pm on race day.
If you choose not avail of on line registration - please note that entries will also be taken from 5pm to 7pm on Wednesday April 18th and from 1pm on race day atBallintotis Community Centre.

THIS YEARS TRIAL RUN FOR LOCAL CLUBS AROUND THE COURSE WILL TAKE PLACE ON TUESDAY APRIL 10 STARTING AT 7PM SHARP.
The race committee are delighted to welcome Ahern's Centra on board as one the main sponsors of the event. Simon Ahern of Ahern's Centra Castlemarty, Killeagh and  Carrigtwohill is taking over sponsorship of the by now coveted Ballintotis Running Buff, which will be given to each participant on the night. We extend a sincere word of thanks to Simon and his team for his very valued backing of the event.

As always the race offers great value for money with a very attractive prize structure overall and a full list of category prizes as well as the opportunity to win one of the many spot prizes on offer. Castlemartyr Resort will again sponsor the top prize which this year is a Weekend Away for 2 people for both the male and female winners. Sean Cooney from Castlemartyr Resort was on hand to make the sponsorship presentation at the recent launch. Once again, long term sponsors Trabolgan Holiday Village have again confirmed that they will sponsor a  Family Weekend Away or Mid Week stay for the both the race runner up and ladies runner up.   Garryvoe Hotel Leisure Centre, loyal supporters of the Ballintotis fixture, have come on board with a magnifcinet prize for the third runners home in the shape of six months membership

So, it's all systems go again for the what for many is the traditional start of the summer road racing scene in Cork. After an extended winter of bad weather, here's hoping that once again, the sun will shine on Ballintotis on Thursday April 19th.

WEEKEND RUNAROUND

Palestine Half Marathon

Club member Brendan Barry took part in the Palestine Half Marathon last weekend. Brendan reports

"Back after an exhausting trip to Palestine (West Bank) & a run in the Freedom of Movement for Palestinians Marathon. I was in the Half Marathon. The people there showed us incredible hospitality and friendship under extremely difficult circumstances. This was in contrast to our seven hours of interrogation with two deportations from our group in Tel Aviv Airport."

Mallow 10

We had a fine crowd in Mallow on Sunday but roughly about half of the twenty nine from the club that entered ran. Our first man home with a very good run was Edwin Cashman and our first lady was Sheila Buckley (who also did Cloyne earlier in the day). All our runners seemed to get on very well on what was an ideal day for racing.
Special congrats to Marian Aherne our only prize winner who came 3rd O/50.
