Senior Section News

Back On The Road Again

At last the road racing action has kick started for the New Year. After a trail of postponements the large entry in Little Island on Sunday came as no surprise. Now with the Dungravan ‘10’ on the immediate horizon and with the rescheduling of the Mallow ‘10’ to Sunday week, February 7, we have a feast of exciting action on the agenda.

Little Island

The FMC ‘4’ which is run annually by the Cork BHAA always attracts big numbers even in leaner running times. The boom is back again and our club is certainly making a rich contribution to boasting the numbers at all the local fixtures. It was encouraging to see some of our new members in action on Sunday last and many will no doubt be scanning through the year’s fixture guide and setting new targets for themselves.

On Sunday last we had a very large representation in Little Island. In fact the total number of entries overall – 410, was the biggest in the history of the race.
A frosty scene greeted early risers on Sunday and even by race time the temperature was still cool and all participants had to travel with care as they were some tricky underfoot conditions on the 4 mile journey.

Nevertheless there were plenty of positive performances from our crew with three of our ladies winning their respective age categories and two of our men making it into the honours list.
Congrats to Michelle Nolan (O35), Joan Hough (O50) and Kathleen O’Connell who all carried off top prizes. Elsewhere Neilus Aherne was second Over 50 and John Cashman third Over 45.

Well done also to our Midleton UDC trio who were prize winners in the team category.

East Cork Series

Despite the terrible weather conditions which battered the county earlier in the day Race 4 in the 3K Series did go ahead two weeks ago. Numbers as expected fell short of previous races, but all the absentees should be back when the penultimate fixture in this highly popular Series takes place on Tuesday February 2nd – 7.30pm. Remember due to the cancellation earlier of one of the races, the requirement now is to compete in 4 of the 6 races to qualify for a souvineer long sleeved running tee-shirt.

Dungarvan

All roads will lead to Dungarvan on Sunday next for the Quantum Life West Waterford AC ‘10’ Mile Race, the first in the John Buckley Sports Spring Classic Series. The organisers were overwhelmed with the response to the event in advance of the cut off point for entries last week and realistically they could probably have got several hundred extra entries since deadline day.

This event has really gathered momentum in recent years with a huge Cork entry participating regularly. Midleton AC will be very much to the fore on the start line on Sunday next and we wish the best to all our competitors especially those running the event for the first time.

The good news for everybody is that course is considered one of the fastest 10 mile routes in the in the country and given any luck with weather conditions some cracking times should be recorded. Recent changes have according to the committee made the route even faster.

It was icy cold last year so we are all hoping for the return of the sun which makes the venue such a picture postcard scene.

Remember race time is 1pm sharp and with that very large entry give yourself plenty of time in advance for parking, changing etc. All race numbers and chip time pieces have now been sent out and should arrive in post by early in the week. Tee shirts and goody bags will be handed out at the finish line. In the meantime if you require any further information on the big race, the advice is go to info@westwaterfordathletics.org.

Mallow ‘10’

A week later on February 7th, it will destination Mallow for the second race in the Series. Four weeks on form the original date, it now appears as if the North Cork Club should get as big and possibly a bigger entry than they would have got on January 10.

Again like their colleagues in West Waterford, the Mallow AC committee have put a huge amount of work into organising this race. This race starts at 12.30pm and whilst entries will be taken on the day, the organisers urge all intending runners to register in advance by going on line to the Mallow AC web site. This step is recommended as it saves valuable time on the day of the race. Mallow AC have confirmed that all existing registrations for the original date still stand.

County Road Championships

The fact that the Mallow event now goes ahead on February 7, means a rethink in relation to the Cork County Road Championships, originally scheduled for that day. The fixture which was listed for Ballinhassig might have doubled up with the Paddy Desmond Memorial ‘4’ miler at the same venue on St Patrick’s Day. However, this will not be the case now, following a discussion at the County AGM. An alternative date for the Championships will be announced following next month’s county meeting.

10 Milers

The 10 mile distance is certainly becoming increasingly popular. Apart from the introduction of the Great Island ‘10’ in Cobh on Sunday April 18, we also have a new race over the distance in Bantry on Sunday February 14, which has an 11am start.
On the same day incidentally, those looking for a change from the road surface may opt to run in the Cork BHAA Cross Country at Beaumont, Blackrock – 11am.

Other Races

Elsewhere, just a quick mention for the rest of February. On Sunday 21st the BHAA fixture list continues with the ESB 5K in Mahon at 11am, the East Cork 3K Series concludes two days later whilst the Eagle AC ‘5’ Mile Race will be held on Sunday February 28th in Carrigaline with an 11am start.

By then the excitement and anticipation will be mounting with Ballycotton just three weeks further down the road. As always our club will be looking forward to their annual post race dinner on the evening of the race. - Details to follow shortly.

GOAL Mile Saturday 30th 2-4pm CIT Track

BREAKING NEWS MONDAY 8PM

RE MALLOW 10 MILE AND COUNTY CHAMPIONSIP - LIKELY CHANGES
==============================================================================

As you all will have been aware, the recent bad weather resulted in the cancellation of a number of athletic events including the Mallow 10 Mile Road Race scheduled for January 10th. Mallow AC have written to the board requesting permission to hold their rescheduled race on Sunday February 7th, the proposed date for the County Road Championships in Ballinhassig. The road championships could be held in the same venue on Wednesday March 17th in conjunction with the Paddy Desmond Memorial Road Race. Options for Mallow to hold the race on a different date are extremely limited due to the calendar being essentially full until mid-May.

A decision will be made on Mallows Request at the AGM on Saturday.

EAST CORK AC 3K UPDATE

News Update -Monday - 9.30pm

- Just received this e mail from Liam O'Brien of East Cork AC re tomorrow's
3K

A decision on whether to go ahead with tomorrow nights 3 k race will be
> made at lunch time tomorrow. Tonight the lap is in the worst state I have
> ever seen it. The slush and surface water, particularly on the footpath,
> have frozen to an extremely dangerous level (much worse and more

> off). A notice will appear on the East Cork AC web site at about 2pm to
> update the situation. (and on our own blog also)
>
> In any event anyone (non locals) intending to travel any more than a few
> miles to the event would be advised to give the race a miss in case it is
> called off at the last minute
Training To Go Ahead

Just received word from Clive at Midleton College and the pitch is fine for training tonight.
Senior Section News

Race Postponements Dominate Holiday Programme

The big ‘freeze up’ certainly called a major halt to the plans of many runners over the Christmas and New Year period. Understandably all the high profile race fixtures went by the way side including Sunday’s opening fixture in the John Buckley Sports Munster ‘10’ Mile series in Mallow.

Runners have certainly been suffering cabin fever due to this lack of competitive action and the increased risk of injury has also curtailed the weekly running diary for many of our club athletes. Nevertheless despite the really low temperatures there was a healthy attendance at both our training sessions last week and this trend is expected to continue through out the month as many of us set sights on spring time targets including the Ballycotton ‘10’ on March 21.

Busiest Year On Record

Before and after that there are a host of attractive events on the running calendar with 2010 promising to be one of the busiest years in the history of road running in Cork. New races have been added to the already hectic calendar and with several other attractive options either side of the county bounds we are certainly spoilt for choice in this part of the country.

Postponed Races

The update on the postponed events has been the subject of some debate over the last few days, with only a limited window of opportunity available to reschedule those fixtures which fell by the way side. Belgooly’s traditional St Stephen’s Day ‘4’ Mile Race now looks as if it is going to take place on Easter Sunday, April 4, whilst last Sunday’s Mallow ‘10’ will hopefully be rescheduled over the next few months. Mallow AC P.R.O Peader Curtis stated over the weekend that a lot of factors had to be taken into consideration when aiming to find a suitable date for the postponed event. Not only does his club require to find a ‘free’ date, but there was a requirement not to clash with any major sporting fixture in the region which would result in an increase in traffic in the area.

Once a new date has been found, we will inform all athletes immediately. .

Dungarvan ‘10’ Reminder

Mallow’s loss could result in an even bigger entry heading for Dungarvan for the West Waterford AC 19th Annual ‘10’ miler on Sunday January 31. Already a hugely popular event with our Midleton athletes, this year’s race will be awaited with even greater anticipation. A word of warning though, is that the race is for the first time by pre-entry only and the cut off date is fast approaching. All entries must be received before Monday next January 18th. You can down load the application form from www.westwaterfordathletics.org or contact Gerry Cantwell 086-3503571 without delay.

Survived

One recent event which did survive the temperature drop was in Beaufort 10K on New Year’s Day where Midleton AC was represented by Brian Healy and Mary Toher (who was the first prize winner in her age category).

Fixture Guide

The New Year fixture list is notable for the inclusion of a new BHAA Race – the Janssen ‘4’ Mile event in Little Island on Sunday March 7th, the introduction of a new 10 milers in Bantry on Sunday February 14th and in Cobh on Sunday April 18th (the latter organised by Midleton native Eamonn Crotty) and the relocation of the East Cork AC ‘4’ miler from Castlemartyr to Ballintotas on April 22nd. There are a number of other additions and changes spanning twelve months of thrilling action on the roads of the county. Let’s not forget also the extensive cross country programme which features next Sunday’s Munster Inter County Championships scheduled for Carraig na bhFear, beginning at 12 noon.

However all roads will certainly lead to Little Island on the following Sunday, when the inaugural Cork BHAA fixture of the year, the FMC ‘4’ Mile Race is destined to attract a record entry. Remember to forward your annual membership in advance to Kevin Cummins if you wish to be eligible for a prize. Either way be sure to arrive at the venue well in advance of the 11am start. There could be close on 500 eager competitors gathering at Little Island Community Centre, so don’t be late!

Upcoming Road Fixtures

Sun Jan 24th – BHAA - FMC 4 Mile Race – Little Island – 11am
Sun Jan 24th – Colligan Cup – Dungarvan – 2pm
Sun Jan 31 – West Waterford 10 – Dungarvan – 1pm

See below for full list of fixtures.

First with the News
BREAKING NEWS - WED 9.30PM

MALLOW 10 MILE RACE HAS JUST BEEN POSTPONED.

STATEMENT FROM MALLOW AC
Thur. Jan 7th

Unfortunately we have had to cancel Sunday's race. We ran the course today and while most (95%) of the road is dry, there are a few patches of ice which hadn't cleared by late afternoon today. We could not be certain of the safety of all runners

Based on the forecast it is unlikely that things would have got better before Sunday. We were keen to avoid the situation of four years ago where the race was cancelled on the start-line due to safety concerns

We were also concerned about the athletes who would have had to travel long distances and the safety of the road network throughout the country.

We are looking at possible dates to restage the race and will be in touch.

Thank you for your entries. We had as many online entries this year as we had runners last year.

Sorry for the sudden change of heart.

Regards

Denis Sheehan
MALLOW AC - 10 MILE UPDATE - SUNDAY NEXT
=======================================

Thanks for all of your entries so far.

We will continue to accept entries until Friday at midnight, so please let your running colleagues know.

With regards to the weather the course is currently raceable and if things don't deteriorate too much we are hopeful the race will go on as planned.

We will have a course inspection on Saturday morning and make a final decision then as to whether the race will go ahead. This will be posted on the website at 13:00 Saturday and I will email all entrants at this stage.

See you all on Sunday (hopefully)

Regards,
Denis Sheehan

Membership

The New Year is upon us again and let's hope in running terms it's an enjoyable one for all of us.

Training is due to return to normal this week on Monday and Wednesday (including beginner's group 6pm to 7pm - Wednesday - New Members Welcome). However, due to the severe weather at present there will be a 'pitch inspection' on Monday to see if we can use the All Weather Facility. Should the venue be unsuitable, a message will appear on club blog and will also be forwarded via e mail by mid afternoon.

Also all club members should note that membership, costing 30 euro is now being taken for the 2010 running year. The official club membership form will be available each evening at training, or alternatively will also be available online. Anybody not attending training is advised to use the online system and return the completed form to any club officer at any forthcoming race over the next few weeks.

Best Wishes again to all for the 2010 running year.
