Cross Country Races

Would you like a change from road races? Would you like to try something new? Have you ever thought about cross country??

Cross country races are held during the Autumn and Winter months. They are shorter than most road races and offer a totally different challenge. They are a great way of helping your fitness during the Winter months.

This year we hope to encourage more Midleton AC athletes to give cross country a go and maybe get a team together.

The team aspect of cross country running is partly what makes it so attractive. Even if an athlete is well down the field his/her overall place can help the team.
We hope to organise a cross country training session in the near future and would love to hear from you if you are interested. You do not need spikes to begin with and if there is enough interest the club will consider subsidising them
.

Senior Section News
Ballycotton Finale

The week ahead will be dominated by Thursday’s conclusion to the Ballycotton summer Road Race Series. First off please note this race starts at 7.30pm. Allow plenty of time in advance as another bumper entry is expected.

Summer is certainly on the way out and autumn is upon us when one makes the walk back to the car in Ballycotton and the daylight is already fading. It has been a hectic season on the roads with race after race and it certainly feels a while back since the first of the evening fixture sin Ballintotis in mid April and even our own race in Midleton in early May.

After 3 races in the Ballycotton Series we have a number of athletes in contention for prizes overall and also for the top 50 and top 15 tee shirts that are on offer for the lading man and leading lady in the overall Series. Of course, another significant mark is completing all four races and this year we also have a number of runners in our club who will reach that target for the first time. All who do will receive a commemorative plaque at the end of Thursday’s race.

Overall Midleton AC has Noel O’Regan (17th), David Murphy – junior athlete (31st), Donal Broderick (34th) and Neilus Aherne (46th) in the Top 50 men at present. Both Trevor Mahoney and Mick Murphy are lurking ready to put on the pressure just outside the top50. Michelle Nolan is 3rd lady overall and has a very comfortable 4 minutes 38 seconds to spare over her closest pursuer. Elsewhere Marian Aherne is placed 15th with both Marie Murphy and Anne Marie Perry still within the radar outside the top 15.

(-I have included the overall times from all 3 races as per Ballycotton website at end of e mail.)

Other Action

After this week’s race there are 2 more evening fixtures on the calendar and both are over the shorter 5K distance and both start at 7.30pm. The PTAA race in Togher next Wednesday September 1 has it’s HQ at St Finbarr’s Hulring and Football Club.

Cloyne 5K

However the big local fixture in this part of the county is the new 5K race in Cloyne on Thursday September 9th, organised by our own club colleague Margaret Twohig with all proceeds going towards Cystic Fibrosis. Registration is at Cloyne National School from 6pm onwards and there are lots of prizes to be won. Refreshments served afterwards.
Please spread the word regarding this race and remember it’s 8 euro to run but walkers may also take part for 5 euro. If you are not running or walking Margaret and her team would be delighted with any help you can give. - All enquiries to 087-2094493.

Army Navy 5K

Last week’s action centred on the Army Navy 5K run under Cork BHAA rules. Sally Drennan enjoyed a fine race to come home second lady overall whilst our Midleton UDC team and our Midleton News ladies teams were also on the honours list.
Individually
There is a delay in receiving results in full – but they should be available shortly on follow up e mail)

Please note that the next BHAA event is the IPS/Garda 5K on Sunday morning September 19.

Ballyhooly 10 Miler

The ‘John Hartnett’ Ballyhooly 10 mile fixture offered a different challenge to runners last week. Hera again Sally Drennan produced a great run to be the first lady across the line in 1:17:22.

Ardmore 5 Miler

In Ardmore on the previous Friday evening our club had many star performers with Marc Dalton topping the bill after a blistering run which saw finish just 1 second outside the 30 minute barrier. Clearly Marc is in top form at present and looks set for another big show in Ballycotton on Thursday.

The same script could be written about both John O’Connell (30:28) and Eric Owers (31;33) as both enjoyed great performances across the county bounds. Peter Gunning who is eyeing up an autumn Marathon recorded 33;29 whilst Denis Kelleher, John Carey, Helen Geary, Danny McCarthy, Colm Jordan, Margaret Twohig, Vincent Connolly and Marie Murphy also enjoyed fine displays.

Marie Murphy Concern Appeal

Mention of Marie Murphy – here’s just a quick reminder from Marie regarding her plans to participate in the Concern Great Ethiopia 10K Run -
“Concern Worldwide is an international humanitarian organisation dedicated to reducing suffering and ending extreme poverty and I would really appreciate your support in helping me to raise funds for this very worthy cause.
Concern responds to several regional and local emergencies, and provides support to vulnerable communities in Ethiopia – including women, orphans, children and people living with HIV. Ethiopia rains have also failed, causing crop failures and the worst drought the region has seen in years, intensifying this already dire crisis. So if you can spare a few coppers and sponsor me I would really appreciate it. Any donation no matter how small is hugely welcomed. I will have my Sponsorship Card at the next few races if anyone would like to contribute then.”.

Club Gear To On Sale Soon
- Just a reminder that a wide range of Midleton AC merchandise will go on sale next month. Our Clothing Officer Claire Fitzgerald has organised to have a full stock of singlets, t shirts, jackets and hats available once indoor training re commences in September.

Cork Half Marathon

The first of the longer races during the autumn season is the Cork Marathon in Blarney on Sunday September 12.
St Finabrr’s AC members have been active in recent weeks as they continue to promote the event. Race organiser Cathal O’Connell says that arrangements are similar to previous years, but this year’s race will also see the introduction of chip timing.

“We are again encouraging participants to pre enter and avail of our on line system, via the St Finbarr’s AC web site. Last year our numbers were in the region of 600 and we are hopeful of topping that figure this time around”, commented Cathal.

Application forms are also available at John Buckley Sports, Mulgrave Road Cork. The Cork Half Marathon will start and finish in Blarney with race HQ again based at the local GAA Club

Thereafter the Cork to Cobh 15 miler on October 3 is next major fixture on the calendar.

Marathon in Longford

Meantime our best wishes are sent to Neilus Aherne and Adam Duchnicz who are competing in next Sunday’s Longford Marathon.

Training

Training continues as usual on Monday from 6pm at Midleton CBS and on Tuesday at 7pm.
Important Notice
Temporary Change In Training
All those attending Tuesday's club training session should note that the new assembly point is at THE BAILICK ROAD CAR PARK - adjacent to the scenic walk area.
The Car Park at Midleton Community Centre will not be available for the next few weeks.

In the meantime “keep on running”.

Games With A Difference!

This weekend 'The Paddy Games' take place at The Mardyke in Cork. What ???
Read below and find out more. But before you do here is our Midleton club connection - our colleague Sandra Bohan's brother Colin Carroll is the entrepreneur behind this concept.
Already a few of club members have indicated their intention to take part. Just log on to the paddygames web site for more info if you wish to try your hand at something different.

WORDS FROM OUR CLUB COLLEAGUE MARIE MURPHY

Hello Clubmates,

I am participating in the Concern Great Ethiopia 10K Run 2010.

Concern Worldwide is an international humanitarian organisation dedicated to reducing suffering and ending extreme poverty and I would really appreciate your support in helping me to raise funds for this very worthy cause.

I will have my Sponsorship Card at the next few races if anyone would like to contribute then.

Thanks so much for your support,

Marie

Alternatively you can donate on-line;

Senior Section News

- A slightly quieter week than of late with just the Ardmore ‘5’ Miler on Friday evening next on the local fixture list. This race takes place on what is a relatively fast course and always attracts a good entry from Midleton AC. This year Kevin Smith is hoping to organise a bus with a minimum of 10 people required. If you wish to travel please contact Kevin without delay. Note the race begins at 7.30pm. (see previous post for details)

New Race In Cloyne

That 7.30pm start is going to become common place from now on as the autumn evenings begin to creep into view. It has been arguably the busiest summer ever on the Cork road scene as numerous new races popped up in various parts of the county. Don’t forget that Cloyne will host a new 5K on Thursday September 9th in aid of Cystic Fibrosis. The race is being organised by our club colleague Margaret Twohig who has already done a lot of work in promoting the new venture and deserves all our support on the big night. More information from 087-2094493.

Review

Our race review has plenty of pleasing stories to relate from a Midleton point of view, with the performances of some of our newcomers again making the headlines in recent weeks.

Mitchelstown 8K

We begin last Friday in Mitchelstown where the Ballyhoura Series continued with a new 8K race organised by the Galtee Runners AC. On the night Midleton AC had 5 competitors and our leading men Darragh Canavan (32:15) and Eric Owers (33:39) both performed splendidly. Ned Ramsell made it three races in three days, clocking just over 6:45 per mile he recorded a very satisfying 33:34. Marie Murphy and Colm Jordan also had fine runs.

Shanagarry

Twenty four hours earlier in Shangarry, the annual 5K to coincide with the Summer Festival had 88 finishers including 30 from our club. Here John O’Connell who is currently in outstanding form led our crew home in 18:55, followed by Karol Watson, another name from the newcomer’s file who is making a great early impression.
- Congrtas to Sally Drennan, 2nd lady overall and Anne Marie Perry 3rd lady overall who performed splendidly.
Local man Billy O’Sullivan, Conor McGrath, Donie O’Connell, Caroline Fletcher, Mary O’Keeffe, Vincent Connolly and Helen Geary were amongst our other runners to impress.

Novartis 5K

Moving the clock back to the previous evening, the Novartis 5K in Ringaskiddy was the focal point for close on 450 runners. Sally Drennan continued her fine form in the BHAA circuit by winning the Over 40’s. Kathleen O’Connell was also on the podium having finished 2nd in her category whilst John ’Connell led the Midleton UDC team to a team prize. Danny McCarthy, Michael Murphy and Philip Mullane were amongst our representatives to enjoy very good performances.

Carrigtwohill 5K

Michelle Nolan’s growing presence on the ladies scene was emphasized when she put superb back to back wins together in a three day period at the end of July. Firstly on familiar ground in Carrigtwohill Michelle produced a super effort (18:41) to win the ladies section in the superbly organised inaugural Carrigtwohill 5K.

No Less than 60 Midleton AC runners were involved as over 350 went to the race start line. Local man Marc Dalton excelled with a splendid 18:32 finish, which left him as second Midleton man home following our leading performer Noel O’Regan. Kevin Cooney, Kevin O’Reilly, John O’Halloran, Kevin Morrisson, Carrie Higgins, Brenda Day, Sinead Robinson and Ciara Coughlan all enjoyed positive performances.

Our individual prize winners included Sally Drennan (1st Over 40), Claire Fitzgerald (2nd Over 35), Marian Aherne (2nd Over 40), Margaret Barry (1st Over 55), Elaine Hennessy (2nd Over 50) and John Cashman (1st Over 45).

Kinsale 5 Mile

In Kinsale the Bank Holiday Weekend began with Michelle Nolan completing that quick fire double and in process beat the 30 minute barrier for the first time. Husband Brian is also enjoying a splendid year on the roads whilst the performances of fellow Carrigtwohill man John Carey are also making the head lines. John joined our club early in the year, but has put together a string of personal best performances over the past few months. He looks set to make further major strides in the months ahead judging by recent progression. Well done John! Donal Broderick and Marc Dalton also excelled in this race.

Route To Crook

Finally in our race review a word regarding last Sunday’s ‘Route To Crook’ 5 miler in West Cork.
Marc Dalton and Denis Kelleher made the long journey to the start line in Goleen and both produced big performances. Marc clocked 32:01 (6:24 mile pace) to finish a superb 16th overall. Meantime Denis who finished 286th in a field of 2,144 in the Streets Of Galway 8K on the previous evening, completed a quick double with a fine 37:08 finish in Crookhaven. So a great weekend for Denis who now sets his sights on a busy schedule of Half Marathons and Marathons beginning in Longford later this month.

Club Merchandise

- Just a reminder that a wide range of Midleton AC merchandise will go on sale next month. Our Clothing Officer Claire Fitzgerald has organised to have a full stock of singlets, t shirts, jackets and hats available once indoor training re commences in September.

Training

In the meantime, training continues as usual on Monday from 6pm at Midleton CBS and on Tuesday at 7pm from Midleton Community Centre.

European Championships

Congratulations to Derval O’Rourke, Leevale AC who produced yet another top class performance in securing a silver medal in the 100m hurdles at the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona. Derval set a new national record of 12.65 seconds in the process. This caps some great performances by Cork athletes at these championships as Robert Heffernan, Togher AC raced to his second 4th place finish on Friday in the 50k walk and his wife Marian contributed to a new Irish record in the Womens 4x400m relay in a time of 3:30.11. Ailis MacSweeney FROM CARRIGTWOHILL, Leevale AC has also had a fantastic championships making the semi finals of the 100m and anchoring the 4x100m team to another Irish record of 43.93 seconds in that event. Congratulations also to Brian Murphy, UCC AC who was part of the Mens 4x400m team.
