Midleton Athletic Club – Senior Section News

By Peter Gunning - Joint P.R.O
Seventy-seven club members lined up for the second of the Ballycotton 5 Summer Series in Shanagarry last Thursday night. At a recent committee meeting the question of ethos arose with the thorny question of performance versus participation exercising the minds of club officials. On Thursday night this debate was answered.

We participated in numbers and we delivered on performance. John Hennessy, fresh from an O-40 second place in the 1500m at the Dublin Invitation track event, sauntered home unrivalled to claim first 0-40 in 28:31 and fifteenth place overall. Kevin Smith and Marc Dalton once again broke the thirty minute mark with Darragh Canavan and Adam Duchnicz just outside. It’s getting a little repetitive at this stage, but yes you’ve guessed it, Fergal O’Meara pbeed at 32:00. Prize winners on the night included Tom Cody who was first O-55 the ever-improving Mark Walsh who finished third O-50. Club captain Sally Drennan took sliver in the O-45 with Mary O’Keeffe one step below her on the podium.

Breda Cahill continued her astonishing season with a bronze in the O-40. Our first female athlete home was Anne Geary in 33:54. Great to see Anna Doris back and chipping her times down en route to pb territory. Super running too on the night from seven-minute miler Michelle Cashman. Sean O’Sullivan, John Cashman, Barry Aherne and Elaine Hennessy impressed as did Eugene McCarthy who should be well-placed to receive a top-50 place when the series ends in Ballycotton in August. With so many of our athletes among the 550 finishers this column would need a much larger word count to mention all.

However, this week we especially congratulate a number of our newest members from Vincent Connolly’s training group who ran their first ever race in Shanagarry.

Sean O’Sullivan won his first master’s prize in the Ballyclough 5k. Sean finished eight overall in a creditable 19:35 with clubmate and triathlete John O’Connell one pace ahead in 19:21. Lovely to see former club captain Danny McCarthy picking up a first prize in the O-60 category his second in two nights having won also in Clashmore 5 mile in a race run over a very challenging course. John O’Connell also ran an excellent race in the Dunmanway/Timoleague 10K coming home in fifteenth place overall in 40:45.

Club captain Edmiund O’Sullivan is taking the role-modelling aspect of his position most seriously being under no small amount of pressure from his female counterpart and rarely off the podium, Sally Drennan. On a wet night in Glamire recently, Edmund ran a superb 25:23 to ensure that the club won all three O-45 category prizes. Stan Byczek in 24:51 and John Cashman in 24:58 made it a one, two, three for Midleton AC in the Source and Fitness BHAA 4-mile event. Breda Cahill, Sally Drennan and Mary O’Keeffe were also among the prize-winners while Matt Chojan, Adam Duchnicz, Karol Watson, Anne-Marie Perry, Anna Doris, Danny McCarthy and Donie O’Connell kept the Midleton AC flag flying proudly.

Training continues on Monday in the CBS at 6pm and from the Community Centre on Tuesday at 6pm and 7pm.

Fixtures

A very busy fixture list lies ahead beginning in Macroom on this Thursday with the Daniel Kingston Memorial 5K. We received the following information from the organisers.

“On the 10th of February 2009 Daniel Kingston sadly passed away after a long battle with Hodgkin's Lymphoma aged only 25 years. Daniel grew up with his parents, Vincent & Julien, and four sisters Fiona, Catherine, Juliet and Claire in Macroom. Throughout his life he had a keen interest in participating and watching sports. He was a keen footballer with Macroom GAA, a strong swimmer and runner and in the last few years he developed an interest in yoga and pilates.

The 5 km race on Thursday is part of the BHAA (BusinessHouses Athletic Association) calendar. Runners and walkers are encouraged to participate as a way of remembering Daniel in his hometown. The race will start in the Square at 8 p.m. – last registrations at 7.45 p.m. Many prizes for teams and age groups. Refreshments will be provided afterwards. Entry fee €5 and €8. It is the aim of our family to make it an annual event in Macroom”.

SHANAGARRY 5 MILE ROAD RACE - THIS EVENING

ARRIVE EARLY

Athletics – John Cashman

All roads lead to Shanagarry on this Thursday evening where an entry in the region of 500 runners is expected for race 2 in the Ballycotton Running Promotions Summer ‘5’ Mile Series.

The traditional mid summer date offers competitors a chance to gauge their form at a time when the running calendar is packed with races at various corners of the county. Many ‘regulars’ see the Ballycotton Series as the ultimate target for the season and throughout the field there is plenty of competition guaranteed in the various age categories in both mens and ladies.

Last month saw Roy Fahy of East Cork AC lead home the massed ranks in the series opening fixture at Ballyandreen where the former Cork City Marathon winner recorded a time of 26:53 leaving him 31 seconds clear of second placed John Meade of St Finbarr’s AC with Liam Slattery of Mallow AC running a fine race to finish third in 28:42. A notable feature was the performance of leading lady Claire McCarthy of St Finbarr’s AC who clocked 29;02 to finish in eight place.

The perception amongst many leaving the scenic coastal venue in late May was that the toughest of the 4 races was now behind them, however closer examination indicates that this may not be the case. Although famous for it’s very steep hill after the 3 mile mark, Ballyandreen also offers a considerable amount of down hill running. In fact, Thursday’s imminent fixture in Shanagarry which features a steady climb from Garryvoe after mile 1 has according to the statistics proved to be more difficult.

The last three winners of the Ballyandreen ‘5’ also won the Shanagarry ‘5’ four weeks later and all three recorded a slower winning time on a Shanagarry course that also contains a demanding uphill challenge late on.

In 2008 Ravis Zakis clocked 26:15 in Ballyandreen, but added 7 seconds to this time in Shanagarry. A year on Sean McGrath stopped the watch at 26:08 in Ballyandreen but it took him 21 seconds more to complete the course in Shanagarry. Last year James McCarthy broke the Ballyandreen tape in 25:16, - 12 seconds faster than in race 2 in Shanagarry.

Additional credence to the theory is given when one checks the finishing times further back the field. The target times of sub 30 minutes and sub 35 minutes were also reached by a greater number of runners in Ballyandreen than in Shanagarry.

So the warning signs are there for those expecting to automatically to move on an upward spiral after waving goodbye to Ballyandreen hills. Consequently those who beat their Ballyandreen time can leave Shanagarry this week content in the knowledge that their form is on an upward curve.

Thursday’s race begins at 8pm from Shanagarry village and will take the runners in the direction of Garryvoe before facing the aforementioned steady climb which eventually leads to a left hand. This sees the commencement of a stretch of scenic countryside offering picturesque views of Ballycotton in the distance. The concluding mile includes an ‘up and down’ section which takes the runners past the famous Ballymaloe Cookery School before the concluding their journey back in Shanagarry village.

Race headquarters is located at Russell Rovers GAA pitch, where the organising committee will be at the ready to take entries from 6pm onwards. With 580 runners taking to the road in Glanmire last week, indications suggest that the entry desks will be extremely busy – thus a timely reminder to ‘arrive early’ has been issued by Ballycotton Running Promotions. Participants are also asked to follow the advise of the stewards in relation to parking.

Twenty fours later on Friday evening, the road action moves to west to the Courtmacsherry 10K race. With the third Cork County Board graded track and field fixture of the season going ahead on this Wednesday at CIT and Tracton Athletic Club hosting their sports day on Sunday next there is wide variety of events to chose from on the local athletics diary.

13.06.11Midleton Ac Senior Section(by Peter Gunning)

Marathon fever hit Cork weekend and several of our members succumbed to the bug as they lined up for the full, half and relay events. Among the more noteworthy were the performances of Trish Murphy and Margaret Jones. In their first attempt at the 26 mile distance, Trish crossed the line in 3:56 with Margaret just two minutes behind her in 3:38. Mary O’Mahony smashed her pb by an incredible 40 minutes with Mary B Walsh cruising across the line to sub 4:30 yet again. Shirley Garde was just over the five hour mark rubbing shoulders with Olympic legend Sonia O’Sullivan as she sauntered into Patrick Street. Marathon specialist Mary Toher was also pleased with her solid showing in the day’s main event. Peter Gunning improved on his Rotterdam performance in April finishing in 3:43 while his colleague, Ned Ramsell was pleased to cross the line in 4:27 having hit the dreaded wall at 16 miles.

Triathlete, Colm Egan chalked up yet another pb in the half marathon as did Dublin bound Claire Fitzgerald, Sandra Bohan and Deirdre Aherne. Fiona Cashman, Elaine and Yvonne Kennedy all performed well in this event for which the organisers are to be congratulated. Both the timing and the routing ensured that there was a streamlined finish in the city centre. With a limited entry of 1000 this will surely prove an attractive proposition for distance runners in June 2012.

Mick Murphy, Tom Cody, John Hennessy, Darragh Canavan and Kevin Smith finished sixth out of the 750 teams entered in the relay event with a 2:42 finishing time. Stan Byczek, Sean O’Sullivan, Matt and Maggie Chojan made up a team that was well placed at the top end of the leader board. On a day where conditions were almost perfect for long distance running it was great to see so many Midleton AC vests running into Patrick Street to the sound of John Cashman’s voice booming across the second city. To all who competed your club salutes you.

Less gruelling yet still challenging was the John Buckley 5km road race held in the Marina recently. It is a sure sign of summer when Captain O’Sullivan issues the boarding passes and loads up the bus en route to this long distance sprint. Indeed Captain O’Sullivan led by example with a two year best of 18:56. Far ahead of him and the rest of the Midleton Ac contingent however was this year’s athlete of the year Marc Dalton who broke 17mins to record a 16:58 pb at this distance. Darragh Canavan, Adam Duchnicz, Matt Chojan, Fergal O’Meara all subbed 19min with Flan again scoring a personal best at 18:51. Rumour has it the man is learning to fly. Tom Cody continues to defy medical science with a category-prize winning 19:03 while John Cashman and Owen O’Connell and Maggie Chojan all comfortably finished under 20 mins. John Carey, Ned Ramsell, Barry Aherne, Donie O’Connell and Danny McCarthy were all well-satisfied with their sold night’s running. Among the too many too mention ladies Breda Cahill’s 20.28 was yet another pb. Helen Geary had a great run along with Margaret Jones, Yvonne Kennedy and Kathleen O’Connell.

The season is now truly hotting up with new races vying with traditional events for room on the calendar. We look forward most to seeing as many members as possible in Shanagarry on Thursday 23rd at 8pm for the second in the Ballycotton 5 mile series and at other events listed below.
