Weekend Runaround
Cork City Marathon +++++
It was very hot out there today and as a result most people seemed to suffer and had slower than expected times as a result. We had far too many out there in the various sections to give a detailed report as we had runners in all sections from the marathon, half marathon and the relay. Luckily all seem to have got home without any serious injury as unfortunately I saw several people collapsed and being treated by the civil defence and others.
Our first man home in the Marathon was Adam Duchnicz in 3.08.33 which despite being a very good time was a disappointment to Adam who appeared to also suffer from the heat. Kris Dowdall and Don O’Callaghan worked very well together and both got nicely under that magical four hour barrier. From what I know so far our first lady was Andrea McNamara who made a very good marathon debut. Mary B Walsh also had a great run so soon after her recent marathon and once again breaking the 4.30 barrier in style. I don’t have details on our other runners but well done to each and every one of you.
The half marathon was a little different in that the start was delayed by almost 30 mins which is bound to have an effect on runners standing around in the heat ready to race. This simply is not good enough and if Cork wants to continue it will need to get its act together fast. It costs enough to enter and having to wait around like this is simply not fair. Again here the heat seems to have taken its toll with several of our faster runners not doing as well as expected. Neilus Aherne consistant as always was our first man home in 1.29.34 followed by Don Ryan who continues to improve in 1.36.19 followed by Andre Brodkorb in 1.27.01 .Shane Gannon who despite recent injury also had a fine run. Carmel Deane was our first lady home suffered also from the heat Sheila Buckley was our 2nd lady home and again as most others suffered from the heat as well .Well done especially to all the ladies who made their half marathon debuts.
As regards the relay there are far too many to mention but everyone seemed to enjoy themselves from the various reports and hopefully it will encourage people to set up and try the half and the full next time out. It was great to see so many Midleton AC vests out there today.Again well done all who competed also a huge WELL DONE & THANKS to our wonderful supporters who were widely spread around the course.
Daniel Strikes Gold In The All Ireland Schools
On Sat.Daniel Colbert fulfilled his ambition and made history for the club by winning an All Ireland medal and he certainly did it in style setting a new PB in the process.
Daniel won the 400mtr hundles in anofficial time 54.83(this is even better than the time reported earlier).
Having watched this young man progress from his early days with the club I am truly proud of his achievement as is his family, club and school.
Knowing the dedication he has put into his training he is a credit to the club and I know this is only the beginning of a very successful career and there will be many more All Ireland medals to come.
Dan starts his leaving Cert on Wed. We wish him Good Luck with that too.

Wishing the very best to everyone running tonight in Kilcredan and most especially to everyone running on Monday.
Please if you want a mention e mail me at mdtacinfo@gmail.com We do want to know how you got on or that you ran. (Relay, Half or Full Marathon)There will be far too many for me to keep track of everyone so its up to yourself to let me know.
Tip for the Weekend
For those doing the marathon for the first time and even the experienced ones. Drink plenty of water on Sat and Sun. (and very little Mon. morning) place bottles around the house to remind you and sip from one each time you pass (ie kitchen, bathroom bedroom, hallway etc) there is no point in drinking a litre/pint etc at a time that runs through you it’s the sipping that adds up and hydrates you. Also do take a drink (a slug) at each water station during the race as it all helps in the end.
If the day is very hot allow yourself 5/6 seconds a mile extra (off you intended pace) for the first 15/20 miles and then if you are feeling good drive on if not remain steady. It’s better to lose 5 secs a mile than 5 mins a mile which is what will happen if you burn out and dehydrate. All serious runners take the heat of the day into account.

John Buckley 5Km
Night Of The PBs
Tonight Tuesday saw the biggest crowd ever for the John Buckley 5Km over the fast and flat Marina course. The was a total of 960 people took part in what for the most part was a very well organised event and the chip timing worked a treat. The only criticism is the amount of slow runners up near the front and then slowing to almost walking pace after a mile making it hard for the faster runners to pass them but overall it was a great success with no lining up at the finish etc.
We had a fair number of runners taking part with two amongst the winners Mary O'Keeffe 2nd O/45 and Stanislaw Byczek 2nd 0/50 whilst several others got PBs including Michelle Kenny 18.59 and Adam Duchnicz 17.51 Emmet Ronan and Fionan O'hAodain were amongst the several others who also got PBs.
Mike Dolphin was our first man home smashing his PB with a time of 17.34 and that was after coming off nightshift.
Others also had fine runs but far too many to mention also it was nice to see some of our injured runners making their comebacks.
The race was won by Mark Hanrahan in 14.58 (taking it handy as he says because he is racing in Manchester nest Sat.) whilst his girlfriend Laura Crowe won the ladies setting a new course record of 16.16

TULLAMORE
Some superb achievements from our athletes Michelle Kenny and Daniel Colbert who were guesting with Youghal AC in Tullamore yesterday.
Michelle came 1st in the 800mtrs in 2.30.89 and 2nd in 1500mtrs in 5.01.48.
Daniel whilst not running at his best still managed 2nd in 200mtrs Hurdles and 2nd in 400mtr Hurdles in 57.38.
He is certainly a young athlete to watch and without a doubt will bring more All Ireland medals to the club. No pressure Daniel just do what you do best.
Well done both of you.

Cill Na Martra 10 Mile Charity Run
(in aid of Suicide Aware)
This race took place on Sunday 26th over a hilly but scenic course. It had a fine turnout considering the number of races around and that it was a charity run.We had two runners there doing their first ever 10mile.
Aoife Jones and Fionan O'hAodain who both finished in 1.40 fine running especially considering they both did a hard run in Ballyandreen last Thur. night.

Ballycotton Summer Road Race Series 2013
BALLYANDREEN '5'
Last Thursday night saw the start of the Ballycotton Summer Race Series and it was great to see so many Midleton AC members running We had a total of 90 runners taking part on what is a tough course on a cold and windy night.
It is great to see so many doing so well. Overall with two ladies in the top six and several of the men under and around the 30 min mark we did very well .This shows that the training programme under our various coaches is starting to pay dividends but I must also congratulate the members of the Dev. Squad on how well they ALL did. Ye did Vince and myself proud for guys and gals that only started last Oct. to be doing as well as ye all did on this course is wonderful.
Overall several people got PBs and even more got PBs for the course. Its quite some time since we had a second lady in this race I must consult John Walshe to get the exact year from the records..

Malta International For Paul
This should have been in the weekend runaround that Paul Spiteri was over in sunny Malta for the weekend where he represented Midleton AC in his very first 10 k race the Mosta 10 k.
He had to deal with lots of hills and 23 degree heat.
His time was 39.38 and he came 8th out of over a 100 runners.

If you are doing these or any other races over the weekend please sned in your news to mdtacinfo@gmail.com if you want it mentioned on the blog. otherwise we wont know and cannot mention you .
EMER CASEY 10Km NEXT SUNDAY IN YOUGHAL
The big race next weekend is of course the Emer Casey 10k in Youghal. The organisers sent on this following info...
"The twin goals of the Emer Casey Foundation are to fund the best research and provide practical assistance to women diagnosed with gynaecological malignancy. The Foundation has funded 3 Research Scientists at T.C.D to the value of €500,000. The Emer Casey Foundation is now funding a Gynaecological Oncology Liaison Nurse at C.U.M.H. The position has been filled by Vickie Cleary who is a member of Midleton Athletic Club.
Every cent raised by this race goes to carry out the work of the Foundation.
Registration takes place on Saturday from 12 to 2 and on Sunday from 11.am at Pobalscoil Na Trionoide."........Juliette Casey
This is a fantastic race and one of the best organised around. The course is a relatively easy one with only one big hill and that is run downhill and no you dont have to run back up it the organisers even provide a bus back to the hall.
The rest of the course is around the town of Youghal which most of you know is relatively flat. Please come out and support this great race even if you only use it as a training run or just jog it. It is for a very worthy cause something each and every one of us have been touched by.If you dont run you can also walk.

WEEKEND RUNAROUND
Michelle Wins Again and Retains Her Title
Sunday evening saw the tenth running of the Ballinhassig Straight Mile with its biggest crowd ever which was well deserved for this very well organised event under the organisation of the great Jimmy Murray and Rising Sun AC.
Michelle Kenny had an easy win in that there was no one seriously challenging her and she finished in a time of 5.36 .This was Michelle's second time doing the race as she did it last year and also won.So next year she will hopefully be her hat-trick.Well done Michelle on some very fine running.
Billy O'Sullivan was in just ahead of Michelle also had a great run and continues to improve with every race.
Joan Mc Carthy and Danny Mc Carthy also ran maintaining his record of doing all the ten races so far.
DEVELOPMENT SQUAD
Training on Wed @6pm from the Community Centre.
Lidl Run Kildare 10k
Rod Scanlan ran the Lidl Run Kildare 10k today at the curragh racecourse in a new PB of 40:44 and came home in 11th place out of 1252 runners. He was delighted with the PB because after a flat first mile, the next 3.5 miles were uphill and into a very strong head wind.
Since joining the club last October he has ran in 7 races and has recorded a PB in each race so 7 PB's in a row shows he continues to improve and that the hard work is really paying off. Well done Rod.
BANDON HALF MARATHON
Well done to Bernie Twomey who did a fantastic 1.55.07 here today over a very hilly and windy course.
Well done also to our many athletes who ran "Darkness Into Light" this morning including Winnie,Anne Marie Lisa and Aoife plus allthe others Over 3000 took part.
Good luck to anyone doing Bandon Half Marathon or 10 Km on Saturday
also good luck to club member Norma Kennedy who is doing the Valentia Island Triathlon tomorrow Sat www.valentiaislandtriathlonclub.com/
Good luck also to those who are running "Darkness Into Light" at 4am Sat morning .Especially those I know of Lisa, Winnie and Anne Marie but to everyone else also.

Race Report
Gortroe 5Km Fun Run
This turned out to be a very well organised event under the guidence of Tim Twomey and Martin Drake one would expect no less but this run did by far excel expectations. Lets hope it becomes an annual event on the calender. Over a very nice and well marked course almost 300 runners took part. Amongst the Midleton AC athletes who took part were Tom Cody,Sean O'Sullivan, Billy O'Sullivan,John Cashman,Joseph Fouhy,Colm Jordan and Brendan Cronin, Both Brendan and Joseph from the Development Squad having excellent runs with Joseph coming home in slightly over 22 mins .
Mary Mc Guigan having a powerful run was our first lady home followed by Marian Cronin (good to see you back Marian) and out for the second night running Joan Mc Carthy.
Our only Prize winner was Tom Cody who took 1st O/50
The race was won by Sean McGrath, followed by Tim Twomey and Noel Berkley (The Running Guru) whilst local Anne Marie Holland was the first lady followed by the fast improving Rhona Lynch.
There were numerous spot prizes and the food was really superb with wonderful home baking. One can certainly say the ladies/men of Gortroe can bake.In very many years of running I never came across fresh Black Forest Gateau after a race until tonight. Well done all. Bring back "The Gortroe MiIe" was a sentiment expressed by many runners there tonight.

WARNING/Words Of Advice
I have been asked by a club member to bring to your attention that several cars in the carpark of a local club were robbed over the weekend in broad daylight and that a gang seems to be targeting groups of unattended cars.
So members please be careful where you leaves your keys (and what you leave in your car) when you are going for a run. Try getting a small pocket fitted to your shorts etc rather than leaving the keys in the usual spot where many seem to leave them.

Pfizers 6 Mile
Tonight Wed. saw the running of Pfizers 6 Mile over its usual tough hilly course which was not helped by a very strong wind but at least we did not have the rain like we did last year.

Results were very quick and there was a good selection of spot prizes. We had two prizewinners both ladies. Fionan OhAodain (Dev Squad) had a very good run finishing in just over 50mins and getting himself a new PB on what was a tough night for this run.

There used to be a very nice Summer Series of 1 mile runs here before up to a few years ago. There were 4 one mile runs every Tue for 4 weeks and the total time you took for the four was your finishing time.
Development Squad
We will meet Tue @ 6pm at the Community Ctr. warm up and go for a run around 6.10 ish.

WEEKEND RUNAROUND
Notes
San Francisco Half Marathon
She is some amazing woman Midleton ACs Sheila Buckley she goes on holiday to USA and whilst there does a half marathon in San Francisco in the heat but no bother to Sheila she does it in 98 mins and comes home in 18th place. Great result.
Bay Run
Reports coming in from the Bay Run have all our runners doing very well despite the heat among those finished are Carmel Deane, Shane Gannon, Andrea Mc Namara, Aidan O'Herlihy, Pat Walsh, Margaret Jones and Catherine Terry. This is not the finishing order.
Shane Gannon had a superb run in 1.37.48 getting himself a new PB by over 6 mins in the process.
Great Limerick Run
As far as I know we had only one runner in the 10Km here today with Trish Coady having a fantastic run in 50.29 over 5 mins ahead of her hoped for time. Trish is just recovering from injury sustained after the Dublin Marathon last Oct. so she appears well on the road to recovery after todays run.
Well done also to Don O'Callaghan who had a fantastic run in the marathon by all accounts.

What A Night
Well Done Midleton AC
What a night What a club. Well done to everyone who helped in any way to make last night the success that it was.The way the club members pulled together and worked together to make last night was truly wonderful. Everyone played their part and it really is impossible to single out any one individual but I know no one will mind if I give special mention to race director John Cashman who did a magnificient job in pulling the whole thing together and make the 30th running of the race such a very special occasion. To those who did the baking and the food you were definately the winners no other post race spread can compare. The way it was served was great too. Well done ladies. The use of the new hall was a great success also and the prize giving went very smoothly. A sincere thank you to each and every one of you who helped.
A big congrats also to all who ran and ran so well.We had loads of people reporting PBs and most seemed very happy with their runs. Well done to Shay Coffey our first man home and Michelle Kenny our first lady home.Peoples times show that the extra training is starting to pay off already (thanks to Kevin, Edmond and Pat).

Finally a huge thank you to John Walshe and Ballycotton Running Promotions without whose help this and many other races would not take place or be the success that they are.
