County Masters Medal For Esther Murphy
Results just out from the County Championship 10 Mile Road race (incorporated in the John Buckley 10 Mile) have our own Esther Murphy 3rd in the Ladies Master Category. This is a great achievement and a wonderful result. Well done Esther.
This competition was confined to Athletics Ireland clubs only.
Sheila Buckley 3rd Lady
Sheila Buckley had another fine run when she came 3rd Lady home in the Elaine Lehane Memorial 5Km in Donerail Park on Saturday morning. Over two hundred runners took part and the event was well organised by Mallow AC as always.
Cross Country Season is back!
The full list of County and Munster cross country races is available on the Cork athletics website. Not wanting to bombard anyone with more information than they need, I have picked out some of the races most likely to be of interest.
Saturday, 21 September Cork Athletics winter league Riverstick
Sunday, 29 September East Cork Cross Country TBA
Sunday, 6 October County Novice Churchtown
Sunday, 13 October County Senior West Muskerry
Sunday, 20 October Munster Novice Limerick
Sunday, 3 November County Masters/Novice B St. Nicholas AC
Sunday, 17 November Munster Masters Kerry
Sunday, 8 December East Cork Novice TBA
The winter league race on 21 September in Riverstick and the East Cork Cross Country on 29 September are both ideal races as an introduction to cross country. Just turn up on the day for each of these races.
The other races all have an entry date 10 days in advance. I will send reminders of the upcoming races, but would ask anyone planning on running them to kindly make sure that they inform me by the deadline I give at the latest. I cannot otherwise guarantee their entry being processed.
I hope we will have good numbers turning out again this year. Cross country is tough, but fun! And everyone from beginner to elite athlete will see an improvement in their running after a season of cross country running.
If you have any questions about cross country give me a call on 087 2265857 or ask anyone at training who has done it and they will be happy to persuade you to try!
Dingle Marathon and Half Marathon
We had three athletes in Dingle today Kevin Moran and Richard Power who both acquitted themselves very well in the Half and Declan Dorgan who did the full and kept his record of having done every Dingle to date intact. Report to follow.
Dingle
Marathon 2019. Report by Declan Dorgan
Another Dingle marathon, done and dusted.
Weather conditions were perfect this morning as 3,000+ people made their way to
the start line down by the marina in Dingle town. The majority of runners were
doing the stunning half marathon course with less than 800 runners opting for
the more challenging full marathon route.
The atmosphere before the race was
excellent, a large crowd of supporters played no small part ensuring a party
like atmosphere around Dingle and the bright sky and warm weather also helped.
The half marathon was once again spectacular
with Slea Head, the Blasket Islands, an Dún Mhór and the various beaches
majestic in the sunshine, with the Skelligs also clearly visible in the
distance.
As you approach the downhill towards the
finish of the half however it all changes! The pace inevitably quickens and
those of us doing the full are left questioning our life decisions as the
crowds of happy finishers cross the finish line and (presumably) converge on
the most westerly bar in Europe, Kruger Kavanaghs! As we continue on our (not
so) merry way, you imagine the finishers of the half enjoying a pint bottle of
bulmers with ice, as they look out over the Great Blasket Island, listening to
loud music, thinking how fortunate they are that they settled for the half!
Although still scenic, the second half of
the Dingle marathon is not as picturesque as the first. You’ll still pass
Ballyferritor and the places where Ryan’s Daughter and the latest Star Wars film
was set and recorded, but there aren’t any remnants of these films still to be
seen.
The second half is arguably more
challenging than the first and is famous for the hill between mile 22 and 23.
That hill is very tough but it’s followed by a similar descent and then the
final two miles into Dingle.
It was a beautiful morning and the race went
off without any problems. The full was tough as it always is, but it was a
lovely day out.
Huge congratulations to Kevin and Richard on
their very impressive runs. I’ll have a before I book it again next year but
I’m fairly sure I’ll book it again tomorrow!
We done to Mick Murphy who completed the Kerry Way Ultra Light today Yes only 60 Km.
St Luke's 5 Km
Over five hundred and twenty runners took part in the St Luke's 5Km on Thursday evening. On what was a beautiful evening for running all our crew fared very well. Morgan O'Regan was our first man home clocking just under 18 min but not as yet appearing on the official results. Christopher McCarthy was just over the 19min that he was hoping to break. Vicky Spiteri had another great run finishing 6th Lady over all. Others who had fine runs were David Cody, Chris Dowdall, Ian Kohler, Joan Hough, Amanda Cooney and Joan McCarthy. Being a fundraiser for the home prizes were a bit sparse on the ground which is understandable being such a good cause.
