Next came Vicki Spiteri 19.17 our first lady home finishing 4th overall and 1st O/35. Fergal O'Meara came next in 20.16 followed by Tony Murray in 20.47 showing his recent setback did not slow him down much. Margaret Twohig came next in 25.34. A total of three hundred and two runners finished the race.
East Cork Cross Country
The East Cork Athletics Division Even Ages, Junior, Senior & Masters XC Championships was rescheduled for Saturday September last and took place in glorious weather conditions. Stunning views of the East Cork/West Waterford landscape distracted runners slightly from the challenging hills. It was the 52nd year of the Championships and seldom can conditions have been so fine overhead and so solid underfoot.
As events transpired it proved a great day for our club with Eillen Leahy leading home the Midleton ladies who all ran very well in the combined senior/masters race. Caroline Geary won the individual gold medal in her age category - a great achievement as it was her first cross country medal. The Midleton ladies took gold overall.
John Hennessy won first Over 45 in the men's race with Ger O'Regan adding to this growing honours list with the individual bronze and John Cashman joining the duo to collect the team silver medals.
Well done also to all the Midleton juveniles who ran so well and picked up plenty of medals also last Saturday.
Cross Country action continues next Sunday with Day 2 of the East Cork Championships in Whites Cross hosted by Carraig na bhFear AC. The main focus for the adult club will be the women's Novice Race over 4K and the men's novice race over 6K.
Mini Marathon
Well done to the ladies from the club who took part in last Sunday's Echo Mini Marathon. The race was won in a new record time by Sinead O'Connor of Leevale AC. in what was the 41st year of the event. Nathalie O'Connell was our first lady home finishing in a fine position of 34th overall.
Thanks to John Cashman for the notes and photos
