Midleton 5 RACE LAUNCH in Market Green

We had a gathering in Market Green on Wednesday night to mark the launch of the annual Midleton 5 mile. While this is the 40th anniversary of the race, it will be 38th year of the race physically taking place; two years being missed due to covid.

We were joined by Becky representing the local credit union and Christine representing Mercer. Both businesses are kindly sponsoring us this year. We are so fortunate to have such generous donors; without their support, our race would not be possible.

Denis McCarthy, who first won the race forty years ago was our special guest.

Denis brought along the trophy and certificate he got for winning. Certificates of completion were a standard at most races at that time.

The race takes place at 8pm on May 2nd. Online registrations are now open and everyone who enters on line is in with a chance to win an overnight stay in the Garryvoe Hotel.

There is free parking outside Market Green and there is access to public toilets inside. Registration the night will be open from 6 to 7;30.

There will be pacers on the night ranging from sub 3o up to sub 50.

The prize giving will take place in Market Green and there will be tea, coffee and a large range of nibbles available.

Darren and Vicki in the prizes

This BHAA race took place on Wednesday evening in rather miserable conditions. Luckily the rain was mostly stopped for the duration of the race but was heavy before and after the race, There was a really massive crowd there 9 794 Finishers) with a large number of young kids and a huge crowd also walking. The amount wearing headphones, ear buds etc.  was unbelievable on a very dusk (almost dark) wet evening on unclosed roads was unbelievable. The slower runners and there was a lot of them wound up having to run on the footpaths. An accident waiting to happen which will ruin the sport for the rest of us.

Our first runner home was once again Darren Aherne who had a class run especially considering he had done the Cobh 10 Mile on Sunday last. Our first lady home was Vicki Spiteri who also had a class run. Others who ran were John Cashman, Barry Drennan, Brigid Ryan, Amanda Cooney and Joan McCarthy.

Results in this morning  show prizes for two of our runners Darren Ahern 2nd O/40 in 17.26 and Vicki Spiteri 2nd O/35 19.09 great running in tough conditions.
