It’s another busy week on the well local scene with plenty of action between now and Saturday.

We urge our members to support Wednesday’s Carrigtwohill 5K which is in aid of local charities and sees a number of our Midleton AC colleagues very much involved as the driving forces.
The race has an 8pm start with entries taken at Barryscourt Castle Grounds from 6.30pm. Entry fee is 7 euro.

On Friday it’s the 29th running of the famous Donoughmore ‘7’ miler. Action at the mid Cork venue begins at 8pm. Entry fee is 10 euro with a t shirt to all finishers.

Then on Saturday the second running of the Ballinrostig ‘4’ miler takes place, beginning at 7.30pm. Follow the road to Inch Starnd is the best advice en route to the course.

On the track scene on this coming Tuesday, CIT houses the 4th graded meeting of the season organised by the Cork County Athletics Board. Action here starts at 7pm.

Our athletes have continued to shine over the summer months at the various races. Last week’s 5K on the Marina Circuit saw plenty more individual and team prizes won by our members, as refelcted in the results summary at end of this e mail.. Congrats especially to Kathleen O'Connell who returned to action after a long injury lay off and collected the winning prize in her category. Edmond O'Sullivan's stock continues to rise (watch out Cathal O'Connell) whilst Neilus Aherne collected the runners up category prize on his retrun to action, as he just edged out the ever consistent Tom Cody who took third place. Joan Hough again excelled to claim the top prize in the Over 50's.

Today (Sunday) a more modest event in Banteer saw our club represented by Matt Chojan, Stan Byczek, Denis Kelleher and Maggie Chojan. All four enjoyed very good outings in the Festival 5K.
SEE FULL RESULTS ATTACHED.

***Please note training continues as usual on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Before closing, a quick reflection from the pen of my colleague Peter Gunning on races prior to last Wednesday's IPS/Garda 5K.

Not even the torrential rain nor the challenge of a very new and a very hilly course could dissuade our team of forty-three members from lining up for the Corkbeg 5 miler in Whitegate. Vincent Connolly led from the back of the field, once again sacrificing his own race to ensure that his group of new members negotiated the demanding re-routed course. Amongst Vincent’s rookie squad, Karen Morrissey and Melissa Cashman both put in solid performances. Helen Gilroy, Sinéad Ivers, Colette Barry and Susan Buckley, all had impressive runs and there is a rumour out that this quartet will be in Dublin in the autumn as part of the Midleton AC marathon team. Great to see Margaret Rohan running so well alongside Mags Twohig, Berni Twomey, Joy Sexton and Noreen Fitzgerald. At the top end of this highly competitive ladies race Ann Geary was fourth overall in 34:59 with the ever-improving Anna Doris a single place behind her in 36:26. Also at the business end of things were Dublin-bound Deirdre Ahern, Mary O’Keeffe, Joan Hough and Christine Murphy. Our men’s team was led home by John O’Connell in 31:51 with John Cashman 32:06 and Tom Cody 32:13 wading in just behind. Both Vincent O’Neill and John Carey recorded season’s bests while Mark Walsh, Karol Watson, Danny McCarthy, Denis Kelleher, Donie O’Connell and Barry Ahern impressed yet again.

On the previous night, in drier conditions but on equally hilly terrain, our club captain struck gold yet again. Leading by example is becoming the cliché of possession for Edmund O’Sullivan. At the EMC 5k organised under BHAA rules, Captain Fantastic romped home to claim gold in the 0-45. Wonderful also to witness the welcome return to form of the great Dan Horgan who played second fiddle to Edmund in claiming silver. With a sense of déjà vu, Tom Cody picked up yet another 0-55 category prize (just how many more trophy cabinets will he need to make?). Also continuing to impress is Darragh Canavan whose 30:06 in the Dungarvan 5miler was a pb. Not to be outdone by hubby, Caitríona Canavan also had a super run in Dungarvan as did both Suzanne Sloane and Joan McCarthy and also Danny Mc Carthy taking 1ST 0/60.

Hi,

The County Senior T&F are being held this Friday in the CIT, details available on www.corkathletics.org.

It would be appreciated if athletes and clubs help out on Friday to run off the event. Help will be scarcer than usual due to the national juvenile championships being held in Tullamore on Saturday. The order of events may be adjusted and all athletes are advised to arrive by 7pm.

Hi All

Ready For A Busy Few Weeks??

It’s going to be another hectic month on the roads with races galore over the next 4 weeks including no less than 5 in the next 7 days.
Here is a brief summary of what lies ahead –

This Evening – Dromcollogher Festival 4 Mile – Ballyhoura Series - 8pm

Wednesday 6th- EMC 5K (Cork BHAA) Ovens – 8pm

Thursday 7th – Cork beg 5 Mile in Whitegate – (new course) – 8pm

Friday 8th – Dungarvan 5 Mile - West Waterford Series – 8pm

Sunday 10th – Kilworth Army Camp 5 Mile – Ballyhoura Series – 12 noon

Wednesday 13th – IPS/Garda (Cork BHAA) – Marina Circuit Cork – 8pm

Sunday 17th – Banteer Festival 5K – 3pm

Wednesday 20th – Carrigtwohill 5K – 8pm

Friday 22nd – Donoughmore 7 Mile – 8pm

Saturday 24th – Ballinrostig 4 Mile – 7.30pm

Thursday 28th – Churchtown South 5 Mile – Ballycotton Series – 8pm

Friday 29th – Kinsale Regatta 5 Mile (time to be confirmed)

Friday 29th – Ballymacarbry (Co Waterford) 5 Mile – 7.30pm

Whilst Midleton AC competitors are likely to be present at the majority of these events in large numbers, I would like the highlight the Carrigtwohill 5K on Wednesday July 20th. A number of our own club members are very much involved in the organisation of this fixture and thus we should all do our utmost to lend our support. All proceeds will go to local charities in Carrigtwohill.

Remember training continues as usual on Mondays and Tuesdays throughout July.

Regards

John Cashman
