Finally, please see the following update from the Cork City Marathon office.
===================================================================
Hi all, from an unseasonably warm and sunny Cork!
Preparations are in full flow for this year’s Cork City Marathon on 4th June and entries are flying in. This is really a quick email to remind you that the entry fees increase this Sunday, but we’ll also take this opportunity to briefly update you on this year’s event.
Entry
The cost of entry for the marathon, half marathon and team relay increases by €10 this Sunday, 1st April.
The cheapest way to enter is online, where you’ll find details of entry fees. You can download a copy of the entry form and post that back to us if you’d prefer, or contact us if you need a copy posted to you.
Concession fees are still available for all unwaged but you must enter using a hard copy of the entry form.
Please remember that there are no refunds or transfers from one event to another, and entry can only be deferred to 2013 on submission of a valid medical certificate.
Marathon, Half Marathon and Team Relay
The marathon, half marathon and team relay take place as last year and on the same courses. The marathon and relay start on 9am on St Patrick’s Street. The start time for the half marathon will be confirmed shortly. Last year, the start time was 11am – we’re hoping to start a bit earlier this year.
Inter-Services Championships
This year, we’ve introduced an Inter-Services Championships. It’s an event within the marathon and team relay for uniformed service personnel, from Ambulance and Fire services to Nurses, GardaĆ and the Postal service.
Info. at Cork City Marathon Inter-Services Championships
Youth Team Relay
There’s also a Youth Team Relay this year for participants 16 years and over. It’s for teams of 5 members, at least one of whom must be aged 18 or over. Cost of entry is €60 per team. Because parental consent is required for this event, you’ll need to contact us for entry forms.
Sponsors Notes
Maher’s Sports have a special 10% discount online or in-store, as part of their associate sponsorship of this year’s Cork City Marathon. Press release and details of this year’s marathon and half-marathon shirts due for release very soon!
That’s it for now.
Safe running!

In 1967, Kathrine Switzer was the first woman to run the Boston m...arathon. After realizing that a woman was running, race organizer Jock Semple went after Switzer shouting, “Get the hell out of my race and give me those numbers.” However, Switzer’s boyfriend and other male runners provided a protective shield during the entire marathon. The photographs taken of the incident made world headlines, and Kathrine later won the NYC marathon with a time of 3:07:29. Ballintotis '4' Mile Road Race Takes Place on April 19th - Trabolgan Holiday Village Offers Attractive Winners Prizes

---------

It’s all systems go for the opening evening road fixture in Cork - the Ballintotis ‘4’ Mile Road Race which takes place on Thursday evening April 19th – 8pm. This will be the third year of the race at this venue and once more Trabolgan Holiday Village have given the event a major boost by sponsoring the top prizes.

This year the race winner and the first lady home will both receive a 3 night weekend break at the famous East Cork holiday venue. Furthermore there is an attractive runners up prize of a family day package pass to the venue. The Ballintotis committee will offer a full range of prizes in all age categories together with a free t shirt to all participants. The race is being held in conjunction with East Cork AC and with the help of Ballycotton Running Promotions.

Donal O’Sullivan, General Manager of Trabolgan Holiday Centre was in Ballintotis last week to confirm his company’s involvement in a race that last year attracted over 550 participants to the picturesque East Cork venue. Expectation is that another very large gathering will be present this year to run on what is a fast course over country roads.

Race HQ this time around will be the newly built Ballintotis Community Centre. Thanks to the injection of funds following last year’s race and several other fund raising activities, construction work began last summer and as planned the doors were opened before Christmas. Now it’s a case of maintaining the cash flow to help finance the work completed and weekly running costs of the new centre and with this in mind the race continues to be a major contributory factor.

Entries will be taken at the new venue but weather permitting the intention is to again to serve refreshments in the open air adjacent to Loughaderra Lake.

Please note last entries will be taken at 7.45pm, whilst a non competitive walk will begin at 6.30pm over the route of the race.

For further information please contact race directors, Seanie Murphy or John Cashman on the special race line number 086-8778182=============================================================>

Midleton AC Senior Section Latest

by Peter Gunning - Joint P.R.O

The 35th running of the Ballycotton Road Race saw 115 Midleton AC athletes hitting the finishing line in varying degrees of joy, exhaustion, delight and dejection. It was an afternoon when all four seasons converged as the 2609 strong field made this yet another landmark in the proud history of this truly great race. Sergei Ciobanu won the race for the second year in succession in a commendable time of 49:20 with Maria McCambridge taking the ladies’ title in 54:58. Our own team was led home once again by athlete of the year Kevin Smith whose 59.05 was a superb pb. Fit again Noel O’Regan was a mere nine seconds behind Kevin in 59.14 seeing them both earn a much coveted Top 100 finishers T-shirt. Kevin finished 74th with Noel in 78th. Darragh Canavan and Neilus Aherne were just outside the Top 100 finishing in 61:57 and 62:14 respectively. Anna Doris came agonisingly close to breaking 70 (what’s five seconds anyway, Anna?) in leading our ladies home. Marian Aherne, Deirdre Aherne, Claire Fitzgerald, Mary O’Keeffe, Catherine Carroll, Breda Cahill and Helen Gilroy also had top of the field runs in the highly competitive ladies’ race. Column inches are not long enough for us to mention to all of our athletes individually but special plaudits must go to Mark Walsh who unlike Anna had five seconds to spare in breaking the magic 70minute mark for the first time. Some terrific running also from newer members Niall McCarthy, Morgan O’Regan, Nigel Carroll, Mike Dolphin, Kieran Mulcahy and Brian Cott, as well as the not so new Mick Murphy, Fergal O’Meara and Marc Dalton. It was a great day for all of us who took part and stayed for the post-mortem in the Blackbird and the post-post mortem in Garryvoe Hotel. We would like to thank Fergal and the social committee for ensuring that when it comes to marathons we’re not always talking about running. A collective well done to all who represented us and particularly those who ran the race for the first time. Let’s look forward to Ballycotton 2013.

Elsewhere Denis Kelleher continues to perform on the ascent as he recorded a terrific 37minutes in the Dungarvan 10k. Danny McCarthy had a great run also in this event.

Next week sees a 5k in Mahon as part of the BHAA season. Keep an eye on the blog or the BHAA website for further details.

Training continues on Mondays @6pm Midleton College and Wednesdays @ 6pm and 7pm in the Community Centre.

Ballycotton Countdown
364 Days To Go!

BALLYCOTTON 2012 Report
Evening Echo March 5th

By John Cashman

Two in-form athletes with Olympic Marathon qualification on their minds grabbed the headlines in yesterday’s Ballycotton ’10’ Mile Road Race. Thirty five years on from it’s line up of 31 runners, over 2,500 crossed the finish line on a day when a testing wind faced the athletes for much of the opening five miles. However, both race winner Sergiu Ciobanu and ladies winner Maria McCambridge proved to be class acts.

Cioabanu (49:20) who successfully defended his Ballycotton crown heads for the Rotterdam Marathon next month, whilst McCambridge will travel to the Rome Marathon two weeks from now, having smashed the ladies course record with a superb run of 54:48. It eclipses the standard set by former UK Olympian Marian Sutton in 1997 by all of 40 seconds.

Both winners were on something of a solo mission. Moldovian native Ciobanu who is targeting the Olympic ‘A’ standard of 2:15 set out his stall early and by the third mile had already opened a gap on runner up, Paddy Hamilton of Annadale Striders.
“I felt good from early on and by the half way mark was aware that I had opened a good advantage. On the way back with the aid of the wind, I was able to kick on, feeling strong particularly over the last few miles”, commented Ciobanu, who broke the tape 56 seconds ahead of Hamilton.

The Annadale club man from Belfast was a trifle disappointed with his overall display.
“Coming down here I thought I was capable of a better run. But it’s my first time in Ballycotton and it was a great experience and a great occasion, so I hope to return”.

Third placed James McCarthy (51:11) of East Cork A.C had every reason to be satisfied with his afternoon’s work, which represented his best finish in the marquee race.
“After my injury problems of last season, it was good to put in this performance early in the year. Maybe local knowledge helped a little but I was glad to be to edge out my closest challengers for third place, after we had been together in a bunch for quite a while.”

Maria McCambridge’s record breaking run was definitely the talk of the post race discussions. The Letterkenny lady came into the race in top form and was always in command despite a great effort by last year’s winner Lizzie Lee from Leevale. In fact Lizzie recorded a personal best for the distance, in the process running 90 seconds better than she did a year ago. “That was an outstanding run by Maria. I knew coming here today that she had a really big run in her. On a personal level, I’m really happy with my own run. Dick Hooper shouted to me at the 8 mile mark that there was a pb there to be got. To record it here in Ballycotton is really special. It’s all systems ahead now for the Rotterdam Marathon”.

Amongst the other notable Cork based achievers on the day were George Waugh of Bandon who finished in ninth place overall and Ann Marie Holland, whose seventh place ladies finish saw her top the Over 35 rankings. Cathal O’Connel was second man home Over 45, Eamonn McEvoy (St Finbarr’s) and Neilus Aherne (Midleton AC) were first and third respectively in the Over 55’s, Pat Twoemy (Eagle) was runner up over 60 whilst Michael Dunne, John J Cotter and John O’Leary also collected category prizes. Ann Moore (Leevale) and Maggie Dunne (Carraig na bhFear) were amongst the ladies honours, whilst once more the name of Mary Sweeney from St Finbarr’s was up in lights.

The very first ladies winner in Ballycotton back in 1979, yesterday smashed the Over 50’s ladies course record which she herself set only last year. A nett gain of 1 minute 13 seconds, means the remarkable lady from Youghal ran 3 minutes 50 seconds faster than she did on that ground breaking day in the late 70’s.

Finally it was also a special day for John Walshe and Willie O’Mahony the only 2 runners to have completed all 35 editions of this great race, which for many of us is now a way of life.

Record Number Of Midleton Runners Set For Ballycoton
Ballycotton Countdown – John Cashman Evening Echo

Midleton AC again tops the entry list in this year’s Ballycotton ‘10’ Mile Road Race with 150 affiliated club members set to go to the start line at 1.30pm on Sunday afternoon.
The thriving East Cork Club will see some of it’s newest members make their debut in the big race on Sunday, with the work of coach of Vincent Connolly who oversees the development of beginners’ paying rich dividends. Over the past few years Vincent has run a weekly session each Wednesday, strictly for newcomers. It is a glowing testament of his dedication that several members who became club life under his tutelage have actually since gone onto run the Dublin City Marathon.
At the other end of the scale Midleton AC will have a number of runners how have seen it all before in Ballycotton for whom the first Sunday in March has become the highlight of their running year.
One of the club’s most famous faces is Donie O’Connell who lives in nearby Churchtown South and who along with his wife Kathleen has been competing in the race for many years
“It’s our All Ireland Final without doubt’ comments Donie. All year were looking forward and building up to the great race, the day that our local area is thrust in to the athletics spotlight on a national scale. The best advice I can give to people is to pace yourself properly. I have seen it over the years that runners take off too quickly, become under pressure after a few miles and then see a stream of fellow runners come up and pass them out”.
Kathleen has run the race on 18 occasions but due to injury has not been on the start line in recent years.
“When I first broke the sequence a few years back it was almost like a bereavement not to able to run. But there comes a time when injury takes it’s toll and one has to accept that you cannot run the 10 mile distance. Instead I be will taking photos, stewarding and cheering on the athletes.
Meantime, Midleton AC men’s team captain Edmond O’Sullivan is the man responsible for putting his club charges through their paces on a weekly basis. Edmond heads up the coaching team on Mondays and Wednesdays and says that it’s a fantastic testament to the dedication of the club committee that such a large number of from Midleton AC are taking part in this year’s race.
“The increase in membership has been absolutely phenomenal. It’s terrific to see that we have over 250 current members here in Midleton. The word Ballycotton is on everybody’s lips throughout the season. People talk about running in great events such as the marathon, but in this part of the county, Ballycotton is the race everybody wants to run”.

Breaking Ballycotton News------ Alan O Shea Out Of Big Race
Alan O'Shea from Bantry AC has been forced to withdraw from Sunday's Ballycotton 10 Mile Road Race due to illness. O'Shea who finished second last year and won the tilte on 2007 has failed to shake off the effects of a flu' which has hampered his preparations over the past two weeks.
Reigning Ballycotton champion Sergiu Ciobanu who won last year in 49:36 is favourite to win the 35th running of the race which begins at 1.30pm. Ciobanu, who like O'Shea has also won the Cork City Marathon finished in second place in the Woodie’s DIY inter-clubs championships last weekend. Paddy Hamilton from Annadale in Belfast, second in both the Dungarvan 10-miler and Adare 10km to Sean Hehir, will probably be Ciobanu’s main challenger

MESSAGE FROM OUR CLUB CAPTAINS

“Edmond O Sullivan and Sally Drennan, your male and female team captains respectively, wish our 150 Midleton AC athletes the very best of luck on Sunday. Wear that Midleton AC shirt with pride. It’s all about taking part, enjoying yourself, enjoying the aftermath and the craic. PB’s, category placings and prizes are all a bonus……..but getting over the line at your own pace will do just fine!!
Now….a few final details
1. Don’t forget Donie’s car up at the pitch and putt car park – you can leave your last minute gear/keys etc there safely. It’s been a gathering point for Midleton AC for years.
2. Remember there is an excellent free shuttle bus service between Garryvoe and Ballycotton from morning to afternoon. Very handy for getting in and out of Ballycotton without parking hassle.
3. Your hard working social committee have arranged the following;
There are six hotel rooms put aside by Garryvoe hotel exclusively for use by Midleton AC athletes for post race shower and changing – 3 for ladies and 3 for men. Say you are Midleton AC at reception and they will direct you to the rooms.
There will be soup provided by Midleton AC for all members ( and immediate family members) at the bar in the hotel after the race. Again just say you are from Midleton AC.
A gang of members ( mainly male!.......) are heading back to the Blackbird pub in Ballycotton to catch the Ireland-France rugby match, 3 – 5pm….all welcome!
For the 70 odd members attending the dinner, try to get seated for 6.30 in the function room ( the old ballroom) so you will have plenty of time to chat and eat before the disco kicks off from 9 to 12pm
The bus for the 20 signed up for same ( it is a 26 seater so a few places are left) will leave from the hotel car-park at 12, calling to Cloyne/Carrigtwohil/Midleton
ALL THE BEST – ENJOY YOURSELVES! “
