Midleton AC Senior Section Latest

by Peter Gunning - Joint P.R.O

The 35th running of the Ballycotton Road Race saw 115 Midleton AC athletes hitting the finishing line in varying degrees of joy, exhaustion, delight and dejection. It was an afternoon when all four seasons converged as the 2609 strong field made this yet another landmark in the proud history of this truly great race. Sergei Ciobanu won the race for the second year in succession in a commendable time of 49:20 with Maria McCambridge taking the ladies’ title in 54:58. Our own team was led home once again by athlete of the year Kevin Smith whose 59.05 was a superb pb. Fit again Noel O’Regan was a mere nine seconds behind Kevin in 59.14 seeing them both earn a much coveted Top 100 finishers T-shirt. Kevin finished 74th with Noel in 78th. Darragh Canavan and Neilus Aherne were just outside the Top 100 finishing in 61:57 and 62:14 respectively. Anna Doris came agonisingly close to breaking 70 (what’s five seconds anyway, Anna?) in leading our ladies home. Marian Aherne, Deirdre Aherne, Claire Fitzgerald, Mary O’Keeffe, Catherine Carroll, Breda Cahill and Helen Gilroy also had top of the field runs in the highly competitive ladies’ race. Column inches are not long enough for us to mention to all of our athletes individually but special plaudits must go to Mark Walsh who unlike Anna had five seconds to spare in breaking the magic 70minute mark for the first time. Some terrific running also from newer members Niall McCarthy, Morgan O’Regan, Nigel Carroll, Mike Dolphin, Kieran Mulcahy and Brian Cott, as well as the not so new Mick Murphy, Fergal O’Meara and Marc Dalton. It was a great day for all of us who took part and stayed for the post-mortem in the Blackbird and the post-post mortem in Garryvoe Hotel. We would like to thank Fergal and the social committee for ensuring that when it comes to marathons we’re not always talking about running. A collective well done to all who represented us and particularly those who ran the race for the first time. Let’s look forward to Ballycotton 2013.

Elsewhere Denis Kelleher continues to perform on the ascent as he recorded a terrific 37minutes in the Dungarvan 10k. Danny McCarthy had a great run also in this event.

Next week sees a 5k in Mahon as part of the BHAA season. Keep an eye on the blog or the BHAA website for further details.

Training continues on Mondays @6pm Midleton College and Wednesdays @ 6pm and 7pm in the Community Centre.
