UPCOMING RACES
Couch to 5Km (Please pass this on to anyone you think might be interested.)
Our Couch to 5k (C 2 5K) programme will commence on Wednesday evening, September 21st, 7-8pm, at Midleton Community Centre. It is designed for people who have never run before or want to get back to running and fitness.
Depending on the demand and progress, Saturday morning sessions may be added plus programmes will be given for sessions outside of these for those interested in improving. It is hoped that the majority of participants in this programme will be able to run the Shanagarry 5k as a group by Christmas. So give yourself a Christmas present and be fit for Christmas.
In January participants are welcome and encouraged to also attend the Monday night session, under the expert guidance of coach and former Olympian Donie Walsh (also coach to Rio Olympians, Lizzie Lee and Michelle Finn). This is optional as the Wednesday evening sessions will continue as programmed where participants will be guided towards running the Ballycotton 10 if they so wish - you will have automatic entry as a member of an official athletic club once you apply in time.
There's no better value around - €50 for over 30 coached training sessions, from September to the end of January 2017, including insurance. This programme, offered by a reputable and well established Athletics Club ("Midleton AC - 50 years on the Run 1966-2016"), offers the opportunity to those who enjoy running, to continue to do so, once the programme is complete. Integration to the wider club membership is a seamless transition, and training continues for as long as you continue to run. “50 years on the run” proves our commitment to the people of Midleton and the wider East Cork area.
Midleton AC also has an active social side so getting to know like-minded people and making new friends is easy, and with members at all levels - there's always someone to go for a run with any day of the week. Trips away are organised regularly. You also have the option of purchasing club gear at a subsidised rate and to avail of a discount at Cork’s major running specialist shop. Also we have the facility to train indoors when there is rain and ice outside. Enquiries to email mdtacinfo@gmail.com or 087-2403940.
Message from Siobhan Murphy who is running the Cork Mini Marathon and seeks sponsorship.
I'm running the evening echo mini marathon for a good friend of mine who has a degenerative eye condition. She's actually legally blind now & has gained huge support from her chosen charity Fighting Blindness. I'll bring along my sponsorship card tonight to training. Any donation is welcome, I know how many deserving charities there are out there so it's not easy on people. Many thanks, Siobhan
Dingle Marathon 2016 (Report from Declan Dorgan)
The weather conditions in Dingle this morning were
absolutely horrendous up until about 8.50 am .By the time we had about a half a
mile done however it had stopped raining altogether and from mile one until the
end of the race the weather conditions were pretty much perfect for marathon
running. The day turned out to be a lovely, bright, cloudless day with no wind
of note to report. The scenery was once again spectacular and the atmosphere
around the town was electric.
As my own preparation for today hadn’t been great I
knew the chances of a PB or anything close would be remote and I never set out
to look for one. I finished in a time of 3 hours 48min. Not my strongest effort
at a marathon but I 'm very happy with it all things considered. It was a good solid
effort. I felt very strong all through and right up to the end No injuries to
report! It’s time to start training properly now. Declan
.
