WEEKEND RUNAROUND

SINEAD KEAVNEY WINS MUNSTER NOVICE GOLD and LEADS HOME CORK TEAM TO TAKE SILVER

EILEEN LEAHY TAKE GOLD WITH CORK U23 TEAM

What a weekend for our club. We have our 50th Anniversary Party and then to top things off Sinead Keavney powers to victory in the Munster Novice Championship and led home the Cork team to take silver also. Eileen Leahy had a very powerful run here finishing 4th U23  and its great to see her getting back on form and once again she took GOLD with the Cork U23 team. Louise Barry and Claire Parker both had great runs especially considering its their first season at cross country. They will be truly flying next year.
Our men too had fine runs with Francis Maunsell showing that he is in great shape for the marathon next Sunday followed by Edwin Cashman, Mike Hallahan and Mark O'Reilly.
Well done all.

Anniversary Dinner

A fantastic night was had in Fota Hotel last night where around two hundred and fifty members past and present came together to celebrate the fifty years of the club. John Cashman did his usual brilliant job as MC and the publication was launched along with a presentation of medals to all Midleton AC athletes who have represented Ireland. These included our two Olympians Liam O'Brien and Mike Keogh who travelled all the way from USA for the occasion, and current members Joan Hough and Orlagh Farmer. It was wonderful to meet some of the original founding committee and most especially Jim Leahy who had done so much for the club down the years. Special medals had been minted for the occasion and luckily we got a few extra because as John Cashman said on the night "Neilus Aherne will be due one shortly and he doubted that Neilus would be around for the one hundred year celebrations so he better get in there this year".
The full colour publication which has one hundred pages on the history of the club covering all the decades costs only 10 euro.
It will be available at training Monday and Wednesday and also in the local shops etc. Anyone who has difficulty in obtaining one or is away etc can order from e mail mdtacinfo@gmail.com Please order asap as they were selling fast last night and they will be sold out shortly. It's your club - it's your history!

Addendum - Danny, as you know, writes this blog, and is too modest and humble to report that he too received an award last night - a special Outstanding Contribution award

Total Shock

Danny McCarthy is Vice-Chairperson of the club, and also Registrar, PRO and Blogger, and Coach.  He was also an active parent in the juvenile section when his three sons were members.  In 2009, he received the one and only ever awarded "Athlete of the Decade" award.

Danny gives so generously of his time - rarely missing a training session - greeting new members, encouraging existing ones, he is "the wise man", the "go-to" person, the fountain of knowledge.

He is seen at almost every race, and often more
than one in the same day - cheering on our members, creating valuable memories with his photographs, collecting prizes, and blogging each race before members have time to get home.

He coaches the "beginners" (now Couch to 5k-ers) and can be seen out rain, hail or shine encouraging them as they build up their miles, and even when injured himself, cycles alongside them.

He has paced many a runner in races from 5k to a marathon - so many of our members who would never have dreamed of running a marathon have done so due to his encouragement.

Danny has literally and figuratively weathered many a storm in Midleton AC and I'm sure you will all agree that our club is stronger and better because of him.

Congratulations Danny on this well deserved recognition of your long-serving and Outstanding Contribution to our club.
