Sally Drennan Reports
Successful Novice Cross Country in
Riverstick
For many of the Midleton AC athletes, including myself, this was our first trip to the Riverstick field which the County Board bought a few years ago as a permanent cross country course. It looked like a very challenging course with three different loops, the largest one incorporating a very steep downhill section and a long punishing uphill. However, I think all of us found it not to be as bad as it looked when we walked the course.Overall our team of Siobhán O'Leary, Louise Barry, Eileen Leahy, Susan Fitzgerald and Sally Drennan were happy with their performances. Siobhan led the team home, followed by Sally, Louise, Eileen (who did really well to finish as far up as she did in spite of bad blisters) and Susan. We were delighted to hear after the race that we had won the bronze medal, but even happier when the news came through later that it had been upgraded to silver, due to someone on one of the teams ahead of us not being eligible to run!
In the men's race Neilus was first of the Midleton men home, looking very strong which is a promising start to another cross country season. He was closely followed by Derek who had an outstanding first cross country race. Then came Edwin, not showing any ill-effects from only arriving back yesterday after 2 weeks holiday in America! Barry Williams was fourth Midleton man, but unfortunately ran without a number, due to an error with the entries (on the part of the County board!), so didn't score on the team. Dan Twohig had a very good run in his first cross country race.
The team's most reliable supporter and photographer, Danny McCarthy was unable to be there today as he was supporting Joan running Cork to Cobh. However, we had a fantastic substitute in Sinead Kevany. Sinead definitely helped us gain a few places by her wonderful positive encouragement.

Update
'It's the most wonderful time of the year'
Cross countries, marathons, Cork to Cobh and Ironman
The Dublin city marathon is nearly upon us and fitness is peaking for our Midleton AC participants. Many use this weekend's Cork to Cobh race as the last training run before Dublin.
Meanwhile, other brave and hardy athletes started the X country season in Ballynoe a couple of weeks ago and brought home silverware. Riverstick cross country this weekend, should deliver more treasure if we are judging by form.
Our final discipline for this weekend is the Barcelona

Our final discipline for this weekend is the Barcelona
Ironman.
A special holler has to go out to all our mighty Midleton men, Miah MC Grath, Don Ryan and Eoghan Murphy, who will partake in the Barcelona Ironman this weekend.
To those less familiar with ironman, this is an endurance race deemed one of the toughest sporting events in the world.
The pre training is usually 12/18 mths,
It begins with 3.8km (2.4mile) swim with the time limit set to 2hr20, followed by a 180km (112mile) cycle, the time limit set to 8hr10 and finally, the 42km (26mile) run where the time limit is set to 6hr30, this completes the race.
We would like to wish all our club members the very best and we also extend our wishes to our former captain and club member Noel Regan and John Carey.
We hope these supermen get their deserved ironman status.
Amongst our best supporters, Helen Gilroy, Mick Murphy, Marc Dalton and Michelle McGrath will be there, getting in a bit of altitude training whilst cheering on and delivering all the news home from Barcelona.
