Great Limerick Run

On a wild and chilly morning four of our athletes took part in the Great Limerick Virtual Run. Breeda Sheedy ran a very impressive 10 miler and Marian Ahern completed the 10k run, despite carrying a hip injury. Linda Curtin and Mark Walsh both ran the half marathon, with commendable performances.  Well done to all.  A good finish to a tough year.

Message From Club Captain Declan Dorgan

Hi all! Apologies for the LONG message! I hope that you're all having a lovely weekend and that preparations for the holiday season are going well.

Having spoken to a number of committee members these past 2 weeks and especially now as we see a worrying rise in the number of covid cases throughout the country, the general consensus is that we should not run the Captain's Run this year.

I'm requesting that members send me a picture of members (and their families/ friends?) - on What's App/ Viber - doing a Christmas run / event or just saying happy Christmas etc. by 1pm on the 24th and I'll post this on our Facebook page on Christmas day!

We normally have a collection as part of the captain's run and as this run won't be happening this year we've agreed to have a collection bucket at our training sessions on Monday and Wednesday nights this week where voluntary contributions may be made. Any contributions collected will be donated to a Midleton based charity.
This charity will be decided upon before our training session on Monday.... but as is our tradition for this event, we do intend to keep this charity local!

Best wishes to you all, stay safe and enjoy the build up to Christmas!
Declan

Anyone not coming to Training can just turn up and donate as they wish anytime on Monday from 5.30pm -7pm or on Wednesday from 7pm -7.15pm

Presentation of MOVE-MBER Cheque to Marymount Hospice

Picture shows Amanda Cooney accepting the cheque on behalf of Marymount Hospice from Declan Dorgan and Marc Dalton.

Report from Marc Dalton

The Senior Section of the  club were  delighted to present Marymount Hospice with a cheque for €2000 from the result of our MOVE-MBER Challenge.

A little background in to the challenge:

The club committee held a meeting in late October to come up with a unique plan to get our members out running while stuck in lockdown, as a result of Covid-19 restrictions members could not train together or attend training sessions.
We knew that no training or training partners would discourage people from going out and keeping up with their usual training regime.

Midleton AC always likes to support charities through race takings and always encourages its members to get involved in campaigns throughout each year.
As this year put a lot of charities in poor standing with little ability to go out and have fundraisers we thought with very little outgoings that we would be in a position to help at least one charity out.
We asked all participants to vote on their chosen charity, the charity chosen by the members turned out to be Marymount Hospice, it is a very well know to all members, as most people in cork would have some connection to the Hospital, and the great work they do in providing respite care.

We came up with a plan to motivate our runners with a challenge to run a target of 5000 miles for the 30 days of November and we called it MOVE-MBER.
The initial goal of every 1000 miles achieved, the club would donate €250 to the chosen charity with the overall target of 5000 miles, if this 5000 target was achieved we agreed to allocate a set amount of €2000.
With a tough winter ahead and dark gloomy nights we thought this would be the perfect aid to help our members to stay fit and have some goals to keep their motivation up.

The challenge was simple, go out and run as many miles a week and log it at the end of each week, weekly tallies were shared on social media platforms to keep all participants motivated throughout.

Week 1 totals = 1925 Miles - Week 2 totals = 1549 Miles - Week 3 totals = 1643 - Week 4 Totals =1404
Total Mileage = 6521

The big performers on the challenge were :

1st  - Ger O'Regan with 244.8 Miles
2nd - Edwin Cashman with 221.5 Mile
3rd - Derek Ahern with 175 Miles

Eighty five club members participated throughout the challenge giving an overall average of just short of 20 miles a week for each member.
The feedback was very good and we hoped it helped people during this Unprecedented times we are all in at present.

This all took place during our Club 5k Race Series which has been run virtually and has had a really impressive take up and some real fast times throughout.

The series races are held on the 3rd weekend of each Month from Oct-Feb, for members only with over 80 participants in the first 2 races.

Next race is on the weekend of Friday 18th-20th Dec 2020

Places still available for tomorrow evening

MOVE-MBER

Delighted to report that the mileage reported to the club for the month of November is a staggering six thousand five hundred and twenty one miles. Yes that is 6,521 miles.

We will be arranging for Declan Club Captain and Marc the very hard working main organiser to make a donation of 2,000 Euro to Marymount next week. This was an amazing effort by everyone. Well done all.
