New Years Day Road Race

Wed Jan 1st……..Start the year with a 5 mile road race and enjoy the refreshments afterwards!

Bandon A.C. 5 mile road race incorporating the Donough Coughlan Memorial Cup is being held on Wed 1st Jan 2014.
Race starts at 1pm with registration taken on the morning in the Bandon GAA pavilion (click for directions) with registration opening at 11am
There is also a non competitive walk. The walk sets off at 12.30pm and the run at 1pm.
Entry is €10 for the run and €5 for the walk.

There is a large prize fund of over €1,000 with prizes across a range of categories. Also, there is a €150 prize for a new course record!

27:53 by Lizzie Lee (Leevale A.C.) on Mon 2nd Jan 2012

This is a really well organised event and the new course has been used for a number of years now and can post some very fast times.It starts on the Bandon bypass and heads downhill for the best part of a mile. Here it is important to take advantage of the downhill but not to go too fast.It is followed by a mile or so through the town which is level more or less until you reach the far end of the bypass where you encounter a hill again for the best part of a mile.The hill is relatively easy if you havn't gone too fast on the first mile.It is followed by a level mile and then downhill all the way home.It is a fine race to see where one is at fitness wise for the new year.

Togher 5Km

                                             A total of 288 runners took part in this race today Sat.28th at 11 am. It was the first running of the event and proved itself a great success with only a few small problems. The results were very slow for a race that had chip timing but that can be easily overcome and hopefully it will become an annual event. The course was well stewarded and is very similar to the BHAA race that was a regular evening race there for a number of years.We had a great crowd from Midleton AC there and as usual we had some prizewinners.Joan Hough 2nd O/55 and Neilus Aherne 1st O/55.
Lots of others had fine runs including John Dunphy who having had his head gasket replaced equaled his PB of 18.15 He was followed by local man Morgan O'Regan with 18.56 then Neilus Aherne 19.25 John Cashman 20.04 ,Christopher McCarthy 20.56 Paul Kierans 21.12 Joan Hough 21.27 John O'Halloran 22.02, Lorna Santry 23.56. Aoife Jones 25.34 ( new PB) , Maeve Horgan 28.51, Joan Mc Carthy30.29 Sile Kearns 33.36, Mary Toher 35.54. Sorry if I omitted anyone but full results are available on the corkrunning blog..

Belgooly 4Mile

St Stephen's Day saw a great crowd as per usual turn out for the Belgooly 4 Mile. There was almost 850 runners raising almost 4,500 euro for Bowel Cancer Research and as per usual we had a good number of athletes take part over this not so easy course especially after the Xmas celebrations.
We had only one prizewinner that was the great Kathleen O'Connell who came 2nd O/60 who after car trouble in the true style of athletes of old hitched a lift to the race and came away with the prize. There were some excellent times run today well worth checking as soon as full results are out. And for the information of those who did it for the first time Mile 1 was incorrectly market as is traditional in this race.

Xmas Message From The Captains

                                                                          Well done to all those who braved the cold wind and risk of hail showers to run the Captain's run in Carrigtwohill this morning and also those who came along with their children to support, even if not running themselves.  Thanks to the generosity of all involved the run raised € 191 which is all going to support Suicide Awareness.  Many thanks to Edmond for providing tea, coffee, cakes, chocolates and even a special" recovery drink" after the run!

We both wish all our club members and their families a very happy, peaceful and safe Christmas.  Looking forward to a year of successful, but more importantly enjoyable and injury free running in 2014!

We Has Some Fun at the "Captain's Run"

Christmas Eve saw this years running of the Captains Run organised by Capt. Noel O'Regan assisted by Capt.Sally Drennan and the driver of the Magic Bus Edmond O'Sullivan. This year saw a bigger crowd than usual plus a big number of supporters including some ex members who in the true spirit of athletics lent their support and help. Our two Athletes Of The Year were there Sheila Buckley who ran and Mike Dolphin accompanied by his beautiful daughter Sally (who Santa will definitely be visiting tonight).
We had Helena Connolly from the beginners group doing her second 5Km in two days and was rewarded with a special prize from the Captain. The weather was great except for the strong cold wind but people were warmed up after by tea,coffee, cake etc and a very special recovery drink provided by the captains. Yes Santa made a very special appearance in the form of old friend Ned Ramsell. A total of 191 Euro was raised for Suicide Awareness .

The  clubs annual Club Captain's Run is being organised by our new men's captain Noel O'Regan and this year its a run with a difference.For the first time we wont be running in the woods but on the road.We will be using the Carrigtwohill 5km course.This is really a fun run in aid of a great cause "Suicide Aware" and the big difference is that anyone can win. Yes ! even you can win.
                                                             The race is run on a handycap basis with the slowest runner starting off first and the fastest going off last. ie If you normally say take 30 mins for 5km then the person who normally takes 20mins will start 10mins after you etc etc etc.and the idea is that all runners finish around the same time. Tea and refreshments will be provided after by Edmond O'Sullivan and his magic bus. We all meet up in the grounds of Barryscourt Castle and the race starts at 11 am on the 24th. What else would you be doing on Christmas Eve morning at 11am.

WEEKEND RUNAROUND

Newmarket 5km

We had a number of club members take part here in what has been reported as a very well organised run. Our first man home was Sean O'Sullivan 18.24 which after the Xmas Party the night before was excellent he was followed by the evr improving Mike Cremin 18.59. Then came John Dunphy having a poor run by his usual high standard but as he says himself"he blew a head gasket at the first mile". Joan Hough had another very fine run and she was followed by Mary Toher.

Firstly a very big thank you to all who helped organize our annual Christmas night out Fergal,Colette,Bernie Sinead and crew ye did a great job. We had some hugely popular and well deserved winners of the awards one of the most popular being the youngest member of the senior section Daniel Colbert who won the GOLD Medal in the All Ireland Schools 400 Mtr H. a young man with a great athletic future ahead of him but well done to all very worthy winners.

Shangarry 5Km 

Today Sat saw the 27th running of the Shanagarry 5km and as always we had a fine crew out there in the wind and the rain.Many of the crew were doing their first race having joined in late Sept. and coached by Vincent Connelly assisted by Danny McCarthy they ventured out in style and all acquitted themselves really well and some have even entered the Ballycotton 10.
In the race proper Helen Gilroy had another fantastic run finishing 2nd and only 7 sec behind the winner the great Mary Sweeney who represented Ireland at International level only a few weeks ago. Helen was followed home by Sheila Buckley who despite suffering from a cold also had a great run.One must also take into account that these two ladies ran several miles before the race as part of their normal training.
Of our men Emmet Ronan had another great run followed home by John O'Connell whilst Don Ryan showed he is well recovered from New York posted a fine time of 19.37 and one must also remember when looking at the times that the conditions out there today were very very bad with wind and rain all the way.
There are far too many others to mention except to list the beginners group who did so well and have now moved beyond the beginner stage. Christine McNamara,Eimear O'Doherty,Sinead Leahy,Trish Murray,Anne O'Flynn, Laura Kelleher, Helena Connolly, Helen Kenny, Sarah Bermingham and Tara Cahill ye all did yourselves proud well done girls.
