WEEKEND RUNAROUND

Relay For Life

The Midleton AC crew are there ready and waiting. Please come up and support and not only that they were there all night and day as well. So proud to be part of this amazing club. Club Captain Claire Fitzgerald's report will follow.

Dear Midleton Relay for Life

Thank you for inviting us to participate in Midleton’s ‘Relay for Life’. It was our privilege to have experienced this very special and unique event.

When the US Colorectal Surgeon, a marathon runner, decided to raise money for cancer by running around a track for 24hrs thirty four years ago watched by so many, we (Midleton AC and others) were delighted to simulate this at your event.

Relay for life couldn’t have been closer to our club ethos, that being community, health (through running), memories and team effort.

It is often said that running can be a lonely sport, but most of our 150 members plus would argue differently. Long runs are filled with personal stories. Stories that are for the most part, light, or positive, but others then that are challenging, difficult, hard to talk about and/or hard to listen to.

At the emotional silent candle lighting ceremony at 9pm, Midleton AC remembered the stories on the roads, of mums and dads, sisters and brothers, and the other relations and friends, our past members who lost their battles and our current members still fighting.

A special mention goes to those who were there throughout the night. For our part Don McDonald, Helen Gilroy, Mick Murphy, Barry Drennan, Christine Murphy & Brian Cott. Thank you also to our team captains, Deirdre Ahern & Yvonne Fitzgerald and their families. These two ladies led from the front, 18 out of the 24 hours on site.

Midleton Relay for life, thank-you for the privilege of allowing us to be present over the past 24 hours. This was special and unique which surpassed any PB or race win. Relay for life will stay with us.

WEEKEND RUNAROUND

Boston Scientific Half Marathon Clonmel

Martha Wins Again

Some fantastic running from our crew who ventured to Clonmel in the pouring rain and wind on Sunday morning. Martha McNamara had another fantastic win in the O/55 cat. and Margaret Jones who despite the lack of training returned a very fine 1.44.48 Unfortunately Bernie Twomey had an  accident and had to drop out with injury at the five mile mark but as can be seen from the photo's she is still smiling as always.

Below shows Bernie and Mag's wearing their new special offer 25e for membership recruiting hats but as Bernie says "we would need to fatten him up with a few burgers before we would get any speed out of him".

Late News Update

Two of our club members, André Brodkorb and Ronan McManus, participated in the well organised Blackwater Triathlon (sprint 750m swim, 22km cycle, 5km run) in Fermoy on Sunday.

BBQ
Last Saturday night Midleton Athletic club hosted their annual summer BBQ. Despite being a very busy date, event wise for many members, the usual hardy bunch appeared. The night was mild and misty and Sage provided the perfect spot for our athletes to top up on hydration and protein whilst marathon training plans and race tactics were discussed. Fabulous food and fun was served till about 12. Whilst a few Cinderella’s retreated home, more members progressed to discuss training next door.

Well done to our superb social committee for the great night.
