Absolutely delighted to report that Neilus Aherne once again took GOLD in the men's O/60 race and straight back from his Lanzorote trip young Edmond O'Sullivan took SILVER in the men's O/55. Reports coming of great running by all the crew.
Not forgetting another great result for our only lady runner Joan Hough who took SILVER in the Ladies O/60s.

Midleton AC - Lanzarote 2018 Report by Eugene McCarthy

The Lanzarote travellers returned to the Irish wind and rain last Tuesday evening after a very enjoyable fun and activity filled few days and nights in beautiful sunshine. Base camp at Morana apartments was conveniently close to the beach, the main promenade and the old town allowing easy access all our day time and night time activities.

It was all go from the very start as within an hour of touchdown the previous Thursday, the first run was underway led by tour cheerleader, Edmond O’Sullivan. Every morning a range of options were available; 6.30am starts for 8/10/12 mile runs led by Ann Geary who clocked the highest mileage of the week and dragged Maire Walsh along for half the distance for half the mornings; Edmond led 9am starts with his able deputies Tom Cody and Alan Morley to run the length of the beach followed by a swim.

Joan McCarthy generally headed off in the opposite direction of the boys for her morning run and anybody who saw the Midleton AC Sports Illustrated mankini photo shoot will understand why. There was also a 6pm run with Edmond, Tom and Alan topping the participation list with Eugene McCarthy very much at the bottom of the list but leading the way in the water with his long morning and evening rehab swims. We also had two non-runners on the tour, Triona O’Regan and Ann Shortt, who applied themselves to their self-appointed roles as tour photographer and Food & Beverages Manager with gusto.

The daytimes saw us engage in four major activities. On Friday, we took a bus to Yaiza for a scenic 8 mile hike interjected with lunch in Las Bremas. On Saturday, we hired city bikes for an easy cycle to Arrecife for lunch and back. On Sunday, we had a 10 mile hike from Yaiza back to Puerto Del Carman over the volcanic mountains in the La Geira wine area. On Monday, we hiked approx. 8 miles by the sea over to Puerto Calero and onward to Playa Quameda for lunch and then back to Puerto Calero before a nice leisurely boat ride back to Puerto Del Carmen.

Most evenings consisted of a group dinner followed by some night life where there was a clear distinction in the abilities of the various age categories on the trip. The young at heart displayed an early ability on the first night to sing and dance long after midnight that they sustained for each of the five nights, while the young on paper didn’t manage to see midnight at any time. They even out partied the carbo-loaded hen party of Derry Girls who descended on us in a flurry of cider, crying and cursing but had burnt themselves out by midnight and were not to be seen for the rest of the trip.

The evening of note had to be Saturday when the F&B manager pulled out all the stops to get us a table at a fantastic Italian restaurant, where she arranged decorations, cakes and even fireworks to celebrate no less than three birthdays - two shared birthdays on the day plus a significant “roundy” birthday later in the week. Happy Birthday to Joan, Tom and Ann Geary. We also wrapped up the trip on Monday night with an entertaining pub quiz organised by Edmond, where Alan, Tom, Eugene & Maire emerged the winners and collected the much sought-after prizes. The scores won’t be published but if Larry Gogan was around he probably would have told Ann, Joan, Ann and Triona that “they didn’t suit you”.

The days and nights flew by so quickly, we were up on the last morning for one final run, swim, breakfast or shop before saying goodbye to the sun and heading to the airport to get back to the more familiar land of wind and rain. A great trip with great people.

Midleton AC - Lanzarote 2018 (Long Version)

Our Lanzarote travellers returned to the Irish wind and rain last Tuesday evening after a very enjoyable fun and activity filled few days and nights in beautiful sunshine. Base camp at Morana apartments was conveniently close to the beach, the main promenade and the old town allowing easy access all our day time and night time activities. It was all go from the very start as within an hour of touchdown the previous Thursday, the first run was underway led by tour cheerleader, Edmond O’Sullivan..

Joan McCarthy generally headed off in the opposite direction of the boys for her morning run and anybody who saw the Midleton AC Sports Illustrated mankini photo shoot will understand.

There was always a 6pm run with Edmond, Tom and Alan topping the participation list with Eugene McCarthy being the leader in the water with his long morning and evening rehab swims. We also had two non-runners on the tour, namely Triona O’Regan and Ann Shortt, who applied themselves to their self-appointed roles as tour photographer and Food & Beverages Manager with distinction.

Even the carbo loaded hen party of Derry Girls that descended on the resort on Friday in a flurry of cider, crying and cursing had burnt themselves out by midnight and there wasn’t a peep out of them for the rest of the trip.

The daytimes saw us engage in four major activities. On Friday, seven folks took a bus to Yaiza for a scenic 8 mile hike interjected with lunch in Las Bremas. While activities were optional the tour cheer leader did not spare Joan and questioned the contribution of the F&B manager. Despite bringing us the wrong way on at least four occasions, the stars of the day were Ann & Maire who set a rip roaring pace, with honourable mention to Triona for her efforts. There is also some dishonourable mention for the tour cheerleader who, after a review by a jury of his peers, was found guilty of blaming others for additional bread charges when he himself was the responsible party.

On Saturday, we hired city bikes for an easy cycle to Arrecife and had 5 participants, with Ann Geary, Maire opting for the sun loungers with Joan and Ann Shortt joining them, or so we thought. However, slightly stung by the sharp criticism of the previous day, the F&B manager pulled out all the stops. She gave us time to watch the Ireland vs Argentina rugby match, where Alans professional prowess was called on to fix a TV problem, and still get us a table at a fantastic Italian restaurant, where she had arranged decorations, cakes and even fireworks to celebrate no less than three birthdays - two shared birthdays on the day day plus a significant “roundy” later in the week. Happy Birthday to Joan, Tom and Ann Geary.

On Sunday, with soccer on the TV and some sore bodies from the previous days, we were down to three participants for a 10 mile hike from Yaiza back to Puerto Del Carman over the volcanic mountains in the La Geira wine area including a very testing hill session on a 600m peak with our packed lunches consumed at the top. Ann Geary once again led the pace for most of the day, with Maire displaying remarkable speed ascending and descending the peaks. On Monday, we had 5 participants who hiked approx. 8 miles again over to Puerto Calero and onward to Playa Quameda for lunch and then back to Puerto Calero before a nice leisurely boat ride back to Puerto Del Carmen.

We wrapped up the week with dinner and an entertaining pub quiz organised by Edmond, where Alan, Tom, Eugene & Maire emerged the winners. We won’t publish the scores but suffice to say if Larry Gogan was around he would said, “Hard luck Ann, Joan, Ann and Triona – they didn’t suit you”. Afterwards the usual suspects went home with zero risk of hearing the clock strike midnight but did miss the final rendition in Murphs where Tom Cody was once again on centre stage taking everybody home to Mayo followed by Ann Shortt who took the place by storm with a rousing rendition of Golden Jubilee. We were all up next day for one last run, swim and shop before saying goodbye to the sun and heading back to the wind and rain.
