WEEKEND RUNAROUND

The Manchester Flyers

Peter, Margaret and Fergal. Kevin is missing but he is just gone to order the celebration drinks.

Word just in from Manchester has once again some great results for the club. Fergal O'Meara a fantastic 3.06 and like wise Peter Gunning 3.13 whilst Margaret Jones continues with her PBs in 3.18. Our fourth runner Kevin Morrison did great also with 3.56 keeping under the 4 hour barrier.
Margaret Jones was well on for 3.15 but her calves went at mile twenty two. It was a very flat course which doesn't suit her calves very well but either way she ran a fantastic time and got another PB.
Peter went out as advised by Donie Walsh to keep a steady 7.30 and he stuck to that all the way varying only by a few seconds. He did even splits all the way. He had a tough mile 24 where he was 7.45 but had it in reserve then. Not a PB which is 3.10 but as he says that was ten years ago but definitely his most satisfying ever.
Fergal's comment is a classic. Hash Tag "trustindonie" which I think says it all. Hopefully we will have some photos later and more info.

Great Railway Run

This was not an easy run on Sunday with the heat that was out there but Fionan O'hAodain had a fine run and got a PB. The last four miles were very tough with the temp. at its highest but he came home in 2.04.51. Kevin Moran also had a fine run and was well pleased with his time. Helen Gilroy and Sheila Buckley just used it as a training run and did 7.30 all the way.

This Man Is On Fire
1st In His First

Not only did he knock almost a minute off his PB last Thursday evening in Ballintotis but Rod Scanlan headed off this morning for Clonakilty Park Run. Not only was it his first Park Run ever but Rod made sure to mark the occasion by coming 1st home. Great running Rod and well deserved.

EAST CORK AND DISTRICT SPORTS AWARDS FOR Midleton ACs
JOHN CASHMAN

What was no doubt a hectic week culminated in fitting fashion on Friday afternoon last when Ballintotis native and Midleton athlete John Cashman was honoured with the East Cork & District Sports Awards, sponsored by Midleton Park Hotel, for the month of February.

At the function in the Midleton Park, John received the accolade along with the Midleton Rugby Club who were the January winners of the popular monthly awards gathering.

Mr Sean O’Sullivan, the co-ordinator of the event, said that John was “an outstanding commentator, administrator, athlete and sports fanatic who has been involved in commentating for 96 & 103FM for many years now, regular covering everything from local GAA to Munster and All-Ireland finals.

“Living in the beautiful setting of Lougaderra with his wife Siobhan and children, John is also very much involved in athletics including the Ballycotton ‘10’,  Midleton AC, the Cork City Marathon and especially his own pet project, the Ballintotis road race which had over a thousand competitors last evening. He is indeed a worthy recipient of this award for the month of February.”

In reply, John said he very much appreciated the award, although he had kept the news of it quiet during the past week in view of other activities! Saying he could “eat and drink sport” the benefits gained in enjoyment and the contacts established over the years made it all worthwhile.

Going on to thank a number of people, John concluded by saying he was dedicating the award to Siobhan, Eoin, Darragh, along with his mother at home, “for putting up with Liverpool, athletics, hurling teams and all of that through the corridors of time.”

Best of luck to everyone running this weekend. I know we have some doing the Great Railway Run and various Park Runs..

We have one lady Margaret Jones who we also wish well and who also has been doing so great running of late.

Ballintotis 4 Mile

A huge crowd of 1171 turned out for the Ballintotis 4 Mile on Thursday evening. The organisers must be complimented on organising such a superb event and the stewarding was so good that some of the main organisers managed to run the race as well. This is a real credit to the community of Ballintotis. Well done all.

Spot all the Midleton AC tops.

And no Sonia did not finish ahead of Sheila.

Full provisional results are available here https://sites.google.com/site/runninginireland/results-of-the-ballintotis-4-mile-road-race-thurs-16th-apr-2015 and whilst a doing a quick  check after there seemed to be PBs all over the place .Paul Spiteri, Vicki Cleary, Christopher McCarthy, are amongst those but the list goes on and on .(Send in more details please). Gillian Bransfield set herself a target time and not only achieved that but got a PB as well. One result that deserves a special mention is Rod Scanlan who knocked 47 secs off his PB in running a time of 23.47. The ever consistent Donie O'Connell got 3rd prize in his new cat. O/65 and club captain Noel O'Regan took 2nd O/45.The ever solid Neilus Aherne not to be outdone took 2nd O/55.
Whilst our ladies had Anna Doris 1st O/45 and Helen Gilroy 3rd O/45. (Helen was just pipped for 2nd by Sonia.) whilst Yvonne Fitzgerald picked up her first 1st in taking 1st O/35. May it be the first of many Yvonne and Kara Reilly on home turf took 2nd O/40 also Breeda Sheedy took 1st O/50 and Margaret Barry 2nd O/65. A personal highlight of the night for me was to see the great Tom Cody back in action and running his first race in almost twelve months.
