Hi All

- Just a quick word from Ballintotis to say that preparations are at an advanced stage for this year’s ‘4’ Mile Road Race which will take place on Wednesday April 20th – 8pm. It is of course the first evening race of the 2011 and like last year the local committee are making a huge effort to ensure that the event will be a memorable occasion for all who visit the picturesque venue located just off the N25 between Midleton and Castlemartyr and adjacent to Loughaderra Lake.

Thanks to the support of nearly 450 runners last year, our committee made a sizeable contribution towards the local Ballintotis Area Community Council Building Project. At present we are hoping to begin work on building our Community Centre within the next few weeks, thus ensuring it will completed by the end of the year and in plenty of time for the Ballintotis ‘4’ in 2012.

This year we are making a very minor adjustment to the course, in order to allow for extra space at the start line. HQ is again at the Car Park of St Colman’ s Church in Ballintotis, next to where the race will also finish and is approx 200 meters from the start line. Entry again costs 10 euro and this time around each finisher will receive a souvenir tee shirt. Entry, refreshments and prize giving will all be based in the Car Park area. The race winner and first lady home will again each receive a bicycle whilst we have a wide selection of individual prizes covering all age categories.

. - Looking forward to welcoming the running fraternity to beautiful Ballintotis on Wednesday April 20th. On the previous week we will also organise a trial run around the course for Midleton AC members. More details to follow.

Best Regards

John Cashman

Ballycotton 10

As the early evening mist descended on the picturesque fishing village of Ballycotton on Sunday one hundred and sixteen members of our club headed home each with individual race memories. Vincent Connolly brought along eighteen of his new members group all of whom finished in excellent times and all are now eagerly looking forward to the next challenge. The race was won by Moldovan Sergiu Ciobanu in just under fifty minutes with Lizzie Lee from Leevale dipping under fifty nine minutes to take the ladies race.

While it would be impossible to relate the achievements of all our athletes with pbs and sbs coming from every direction, some outstanding performances merit a special mention. Our own elite force from Midleton AC clocked personal bests with Noel O’Regan home in 57:21 closely followed by Kevin Smyth in his Ballycotton best of 59:57. Neilus Aherne took second prize in the O-55 category with a scintillating 60:46 while our first lady, Michelle Nolan again posted a sub 65. Category prizes also went to Sally Drennan, 3rd O-45 in 72:03 and Margaret Barry 1st O-60. Another prize winner from Midleton AC was Michael Furlong as first Junior finisher in 68:08. Great to see that two of our Rotterdam-bound marathoners, Adrian Williams and Fergal O’Meara came home in pbs. Only five weeks to go lads and you are looking good.

At the post-race dinner in the Mideton Park on Sunday night each member had his or her own story to tell. Whether it was Donie’s birthday reminiscing of twenty seven consecutive Ballycotton’s , or Noel’s mile by mile account of his umpteenth personal best, the crack was up to ninety. Thanks to newly appointed club captains, Sally and Ed and the social committee for organising the night.

So here’s to Ballycotton 2012! Keep on running!

Ballycotton 2011 - How The Race Was Won

Ciobanu And Lee, The Ballycotton Headline Makers

John Cashman

(Evening Echo March 7th)

Sergiu Ciobanu won the 34th running of Ballycotton’s famed ‘10’ Mile Road Race yesterday as he seized control from 2007 winner Alan O’Shea (Bantry AC) over the closing three miles. On a perfect day for running the duo both set personal best times for the distance whilst ladies winner Lizzie Lee from Leevale AC did likewise as she produced an assured and composed performance.

The battle lines between Ciobanu, last year’s Cork City Marathon winner and O’Shea were set from early in the race when the pair made a decisive break to go clear of their nearest pursuers including last year’s runner up Mick Clohisey, Sean Hehir of Rathfarnham and local favourite Sean McGrath.

Early pace checks saw O’Shea cover the first half mile in 2:15, before passing the initial mile marker in 4:35. By mile 3 the clock was reading 14:12 and by now the smooth moving Cork athlete had established an advantage of 7 seconds on Ciobanu. Little changed, as the leaders with a gentle breeze to their backs, progressed to the mid way point of the race where O’Shea’s time read 24:14, with Ciobanu still lurking 7 seconds back.

In fact the sixth mile saw the status again quo continued (O’Shea’s next marker indicated 29:15 four miles from home)

However, the decisive move followed soon afterwards with the Moldovan eventually closing in on the leader to reach parity by the 7 mile mark as the clock showed 34:22. Ciobanu’s upward spiral continued in the next mile as he established a ten second advantage. From there he retained the initiative to eventually break the tape in 49:36, 22 seconds clear of O’Shea who in setting a personal landmark for the distance also completed his first ‘10’ miler under 50 minutes.

Sean Hehir outsmarted Mick Clohisey by 35 seconds to take third prize whilst James McCarthy paced himself superbly to come home in fifth position. Colin Merritt of Carraig na bhFear the top man Over 40 was two places further back whilst McCarthy’s East Cork AC team mates Sean McGrath and Fergus Meade were next to cross the line.

Both Ciobanu and O’Shea, who incidentally has the Rotterdam Marathon next month as his major goal, have had plenty of close contests in recent years and on this occasion, the Clonliffe Harriers club man, who has expressed his wish to run for Ireland at Olympic level, just held the balance of power.

“I’m very proud to win this great race and to set a new personal best time in the process”, commented Ballycotton’s lastest leading man.

“Three years ago when I ran here it was a very windy day and I discovered that the last two miles were very tough. Today, I decided to keep some extra reserves for that area of the race and then go hard to the end. From now I will think about returning to Cork for the Marathon in June, before planning ahead and try to retain the National Marathon title in Dublin”.

Alan O’Shea whose more immediate marathon mission sees him jet off to the Algarve today for three weeks of intensive training, was also happy with his personal best time.

“I missed a couple of years here due both to injury and being in Australia, thus I was glad to return this year. With a ‘pb’ I’m happy enough although looking back the feeling now is that I went out a bit too fast. In fairness to Sergiu he stuck with me and over the last 3 miles he had more in the tank.

“Presently, it’s heavy training all the way for me ahead the Rotterdam Marathon. I’m going to take in a Half Marathon in between and hopefully try and get a personal best next month for the marathon and get inside 2 hours 20 minutes”, concluded the popular Cork based doctor.

Ladies winner Lizzie Lee made her move early in the race building up a lead of 1 minute by the three mile mark and maintaining that advantage through to mile 7. She won in impressive style crossing the line in emotional fashion with the clock reading 58:48. It gave the 30 year old Cork runner a cushion of 32 seconds over Angela McCann from Clonmel AC.

Five years ago in her only other visit to the famous race, when she was concentrating on triathlons, Lizzie’s time was 76:33.

“I must pay special tribute to my coach Donie Walshe for all his guidance and expertise. This year I was injured up until mid January so I had to pack in a lot of training to achieve my target of winning this race. Whn you come from Cork all you dream about is winning in Ballycotton – it’s the holy grail It’s a fantastic race and a fantastic occasion, which is superbly organised by John Walshe and his colleagues”

Anotherr Cork lady in celebratory mood was Mary Sweeney, whose first excursion into the Over 50 category in Ballycotton saw her set a new course record of 66:10 for the category. In the process she also ran 1:37 faster than 32 years ago when she became the first female to cross the line in the race.

Overall yesterday’s perfect weather conditions led to many runners in a field of close on 2,400 posting new personal best times for the race. It was also significant that this year’s race was the first occasion in 7 years in which more than 100 athletes broke the magical hour barrier.

After a day on intense activity Ballycotton’s beautiful village was returning to normality by the time darkness fell last evening. As thousands of runners and spectators went their separate ways they left in the knowledge that they had been part of a unique occasion – a race organised to the highest standards by runners for runners.

Ballycotton Countdown
Almost There
!

Packing of the famous Ballycotton Race Day Mugs will take place at the Community Hall in Ballycotton from approx 7pm this Friday evening – please help out if you spare some time – it has become some what of a tradition and it is certainly appreciated by the organisers.

ELITE FIELD TAKING SHAPE

With the countdown really on, the elite end of this year’s Ballycotton ‘10 is now taking shape and it looks like there could be a cracker of a race on Sunday. The following are some of the names to look out for.

Back again this year is 2007 winner Alan O’Shea who is preparing for the Rotterdam Marathon next month. A recent half-marathon in Barcelona where he finished ninth in 66:03 was followed by a 30:45 10km in Enniscorthy, both of which shows the Bantry athlete to be in top form and on course to finally break the elusive 50 minute barrier for 10 miles.

Sergiu Ciobanu won the Cork City Marathon last June and also added the Connemara and Longford titles before winning the AAI National Marathon held in conjunction with the Dublin event. In his only appearance at Ballycotton in 2008 (when he was known as Sergiu Turea) he finished second to Vinny Mulvey in a time of 51:06.

Mick Clohisey was runner-up in Ballycotton twelve months ago, his 50:39 an improvement on the 51:02 he ran when finishing fourth the year before. Last Saturday, he took bronze in the National C-C to add to the silver he won in the National Half-Marathon last September.

Sean Hehir won the Munster C-C in his native Clare last month and had a fine ninth place last Saturday in the Nationals. A 24:31 for five miles at Raheny shows that he, too, could be close to 50 minutes on Sunday.

Cork-born Cillian O’Leary was third three years ago in Ballycotton and is part of a strong Raheny team who will be hoping to retain the team title they have won for the last three years.

And then, of course, there are the two local East Cork runners, Sean McGrath and James McCarthy. Second and third respectively in the Munster Senior behind Hehir, James turned the tables last week with his 17th in the Nationals ahead of Sean who finished 22nd. The latter had won the Carrigaline five-miler six days before in 25:21 and will be hoping to improve on his fifth position of the past two years.

Also hoping for a top 10 position will be Colin Merritt, Wieslaw Sosnowski, George Waugh, Philip Harty, Cian Murphy and no doubt a number of other outsiders.

Amongst the women, Lizzie Lee will certainly have plenty of home support as she strives to add the ten-mile crown to her two victories in the Ballycotton ‘5’ since she arrived on the scene less than two years ago. Although somewhat disappointed with her eight place performance on Saturday, a time of 28:40 for the tough Carrigaline five-miler the previous week indicates a time of around 58 minutes which should be good enough to win.

Angela McCann from Clonmel will be making her Ballycotton debut, although she is no stranger to the Cork scene having finished second in the marathon last June before winning both the Cork Half-Marathon and Cork to Cobh races in the autumn. She broke the hour (59:50) at Dungarvan a month ago and was also successful over 10km at the same venue last Sunday when winning in 36:43.

Catriona Jennings (Sportsworld) missed Ballycotton through injury last year so no doubt will be hoping to make up for that disappointment. Her clubmate, Lucy D’Arcy, is a regular Ballycotton visitor with a fourth and two fifth-place finishers over the last three years.

Niamh Roe and Ann-Marie Holland finished in the first 10 last year and will be trying to retain Eagle’s team award from 2010. There will also be a lot of local interest in the performances of Niamh Walsh (Youghal) and Michelle Nolan (Midleton) who have made considerable progress since last year’s race.

And of course we cannot forget the original Ballycotton ‘10’ winner, the evergreen Mary Sweeney. This year she has entered the new category of F50 and recorded 65:26 in Dungarvan last month and so looks set to run much faster than the 68:47 she ran all of 32 years ago here in Ballycotton.

*Unfortunately, some of our Midleton AC members who had intended have been force to withdraw due to injury - we wish you a speedy recovery.

For the record here is the official Midleton AC contingent which was originally entered.

We wish one and all the every best of luck, most especially those of you running the race for the first time.

Cork Marathon Winner Set For Ballycotton

Cork City Marathon winner Sergiu Ciobanu has confirmed his participation in next Sunday’s Ballycotton ‘10’ Miile Road Race.

Ciobanu set a new course record of 2:25:54 when claiming top honours in Cork last year and will be expected to have a major say in the destination of the prizes in Ballycotton. The Moldovan who has also claimed the National Marathon title in Dublin finished runner up to Latvian Floroseks Mareks in the opening race of the John Buckley Sports sponsored Spring Series in Dungarvan in late January. On the day he clocked just under 5 minute mile pace to cross the line in 49:49 on what was a perfect day for running.

With weather indications again looking favourable for Sunday next Ciobanu who runs with Clonliffe Harriers will be all out to continue his impressive recent record.

Last year’s runner up in Ballycotton, Mick Clohisey is set for a return visit to the East Cork village, after finishing 22 seconds behind surprise winner Greg Roberts from City of Derry AC twelve months ago.

Incidentally Clohisey and Ciobanu were in opposition only last Sunday on grass when the Dubliner finished third three places ahead of his rival at the Woodies National Inter Club Cross Country Championships in Santry. The field also featured Sean Hehir of Rathfarnham who came in ninth place and is also heading south this weekend for the Ballycotton showpiece.

Meantime, Colin Merritt of Carraig na bhFear AC also looks set to take his place on the start line. He finished fourth in the aforementioned Series opener in Dungarvan this year and was third home in the Cork City Marathon last year.

More details of the final list of elite runners is expected to be known within the next twenty four hours.

This is just a reminder for all new runners who are not able to run on the day....You CANNOT transfer your race number to anyone else!

There are 2 main reasons for this...
1) The race can only handle around 2,500 at most. The roads in the area are narrow and access is a major issue. Hence, the cut-off for entries back in December and the restriction on numbers. The organisers know that a certain percentage of runners won't turn up on the day and they take this into account when taking entries. If there is wholesale swapping of numbers then it makes this exercise pointless.

2) The main reason is that in recent years, the organisers had the farcical situation of some male runners taking swapped numbers from slower female runners and then winning prizes in the womens category. Essentially when the race finishes now, the organisers have to take the list of prizewinners and then check if all of those people actually ran the race! Not only is it completely unfair on legimate prizewinners but it is a lot of extra work for the organisers.

This has been going on for a number of years despite the best efforts of the organisers. After the 2010 race, Ballycotton Running Promotions took the unprecedented step of putting the names and photographs of people who ran with swapped numbers up on their website.

Some people may take the view that it's no big deal to run with someone else's number but it is the one condition that the organisers are adamant about. At the end of the entry form for the race, you signed a form which said that you would not transfer your race number. If your signature has any value then don't transfer your number.

Statement from Ballycotton Running Promotions...
You cannot give your number to another runner. Last year, despite our warnings, a few runners again ignored this rule. As a result, we took the unprecedented step of publishing pictures of people not wearing the correct number on our website. We are prepared to do the same this year and also will not accept entries from the offending parties for next year’s race. So don’t say you haven’t been warned!
Please do not have your club named and shamed

Ballycotton's Record Breakers

(article John Cashman, Evening Echo Tuesday March 1st)

Preparations are now at a very advanced stage for next Sunday’s thirty fourth running of the Ballycotton ‘10’ Mile Road Race. As the organising committee countdown to 1.30pm on Sunday next, across the country many runners are fine tuning their training as they look forward to what is one Ireland’s best loved road races.
As in previous years demand for the 2011 race exceeded the entry limit, with the organisers realistically expecting close on 2,500 runners to go the start line, from the original 3,265 entry recorded on deadline day back in December.
This weekend’s race again highlights the huge surge of interest in road running which has swept across the country in recent years and whilst many of the Ballycotton bound athletes will be travelling on a familiar journey, Sunday will also represent a first involvement for hundreds of others.

Significantly although numbers have soared particularly since the turning of the millennium the overall standards amongst the elite runners has dropped considerably, a fact reflected by the number of long standing course records.

Gary Staines of Belgrave established the course record of 47:00 back in 1995 whilst the women’s record of 55:28 was set by Marian Sutton of Westbury only two years later. Overall of the top twenty times clocked in the 33 year race history only three were produced after 2000. These stand out performances were by 2004 winner Charles Kiplagat (48:00) and the first and second place runners a year later, Dave Mitchinson (48:26) and Jackson Kipngetuny (48:30).

From a local Cork prospective four timer Liam O’Brien, who incidentally now plays a huge role in the organisation of the race, produced the fastest ever time by a Cork athlete when clocking 47:57 in his third win back in 1988. Liam still holds the course record in the Over 40 category having recorded 50:06 in the 1995 race.

In terms of the other overall veterans records, St Finbarr’s Flor O’Leary has the distinction of holding the current Over 60 (59:15) and Over 65 (64:19) records. His club mate John Buckley remains top man Over 50 having finished in 54:09 thirteen years ago. Meantime Mary Sheehan of Grange Fermoy set a new standard in the ladies Over 50 category when she crossed the line in 67:40 just three years ago.

Participation levels from local Cork athletic clubs is again extremely high with locally based Midleton AC having a total of 115 entries alone. Included in this figure are many Ballycotton newcomers along with established course veterans such as Donie O’Connell, Danny McCarthy and Tom Cody.

Up to the start of this week, the organisers were still awaiting confirmation of the make up of the field in the elite category. Some of the country’s best know names were in action at the weekend’s National Cross Country Championships, and were unlikely to make a decision regarding their participation until mid week.
Corkman Alan O’Shea, winner in 2007 may yet be at the start line, whilst local Ballyandreen native Sean McGrath who has been in excellent form in recent weeks, will be hoping to be amongst the front runners, having finished fifth in both of the last two years.
Whilst Sunday’s race is likely to again attract huge number of spectators, demands on the organising committee continue to increase. Extra participation levels along with extra watchers mean increased traffic in the general race vicinity. On Sunday, the usual park ‘n’ ride system will again be in operation, with major traffic restrictions in the region from early morning.

Memories - 2010 - Sun Shine And Surprises In Ballycotton

On a glorious spring afternoon Ballycotton’s famous ‘10’ Mile Road Race produced an unlikely winner in Greg Roberts from City Of Derry AC. A first timer over the course and distance, the northerner hit the front mid way through before eventually crossing the line in 50:39 to leave him with 22 seconds breathing space over closest pursuer Mick Clohisey (Raheny Shamrock AC).

The surprise element was also replicated in the ladies race as another first time visitor, Barbara Sanchez of Raheny edged home ahead of Siobhan O’Doherty from Borrisokane AC. Defending champion Pauline Curley bidding for her fourth Ballycotton success in five years was forced to settle for fourth behind Cork’s Clare Gibbons McCarthy who triumphed in 2005.

A different conclusion might however have resulted at the head of the field overall had Alan O’Shea of Bantry AC not suffered an injury when looking in a strong position just after the mid way point. The 2007 winner had moved to the head of affairs when passing the 6 mile mark in 29:48. But that set back changed the complexion of his race and although he resumed after a brief stop his challenge for glory had been halted and he eventually finished with fifteen runners ahead of him.
With temperatures hitting the mid teens and a strengthening breeze, it was a day for sun cream and shades as over 2,500 runners departed from the start line to a picture postcard backdrop.
