Waterford Half Marathon Report from Mark Walsh
A Great Day in the Déise City for Midleton AC
We had about 25 wonderful athletes, as well as a few great supporters – including Louise Barry and Tim Hannon - in Waterford for the half marathon this morning. This was a truly impressive turnout for a dull early December Saturday.
With nearly 1800 runners taking part, this is one of the biggest 13.1 milers on the Irish calendar and must be one of the best value and best organised. Everything from the venue, the parking, ease of access, the stewarding, the food, goodie bags, general organisation and, of course, the hats, were top class. Congrats to WAC!
As for the Midleton AC runners I did not meet anyone who wasn’t happy with their performance on the day. Yes, it was a tough course, with two very long and challenging climbs – one at mile 2 and one at mile 9/10. That said, the weather was favourable for running, with cool temperatures and light winds.
First home for the Club was Don Ryan, closely followed by Seán O’Sullivan and then Mark Walsh, Edwin Cashman and Mick Murphy, all of whom were under the 90 minute mark. The ladies were led home by the impressive Helen Gilroy, with Deirdre Aherne next, breaking 100 mins again, and Claire Fitzgerald close behind.
There were many excellent performances and several PBs on the day, including Mark O’Reilly, Alan Morley, Breeda Sheedy, Edwin Cashman, Mick Murphy, Ger O’Regan, Trevor Condon and Mark Walsh (and maybe more that are not known at time of going to press).
Well done to Claire Parker, Vikki Peters, Siobhan Murphy, Martha McNamara, Bernie Twomey and Ann Marie Perry, all flying the flag high for the ladies. And, not to be outdone, congrats also to Kevin Moran, Brian Cott, Denis Collins and Richard Power, all of whom should be thrilled with their achievement. HATS off to All !!
Again, sincere apologies if anyone has been overlooked – let us know how you did.
Ger O'Regan has a great run and a PB.
Big thanks to Louise Barry, Brian Cott and Mark Walsh for most of the photo's .
